There is one thing my AP CS teacher in High School did that I like. After we all bitched and moaned about handwriting code, he would, from then on, disconnect all machines in the room from the network, image them, then let us go. Here's the caveat: the compiler would only run 5 times, print the code, then delete itself. It didn't matter how long it took us (one guy took three days to complete the test,) but you only got 5 compiles. Incidently, under that pressure, I usually only needed 2 or 3.:)
I disagree with you, sir. I once has a CS test that asked me to write a function that I created years ago, and had written many times since, from memory. Even though it should have been a cakewalk for me, a couple missing semi-colons and an incorrectly placed parenthese (is that even a word?)botched my grade all to hell. Of course, I guess it also depends on how anal your "instructor" is about formatting. But given it's coding, I guess they have every right to be. After seeing the horrible grade I received on the test, I sat down at a machine, and the damn thing compiled and executed perfectly the first time I tried. My mind works two entirely different ways when on a keyboard and when pushing a pencil. If I'm going to be taking a test on computer programming, put me on a computer. It doesn't seem like a fair measurement otherwise.
I had an ATI AIW Radeon 7500 and SB Audigy running on (what I think) is a generic board (Biostar...feel free to correct me if it is not generic.) I had an Athlon 800 (classic) being cooled with a 486 fan, running Windows XP, without any driver updates other than what came with the hardware. I didn't even have the VIA 4in1 drivers loaded. 128 Megs of ram. Even playing quake 3 at 90 FPS (not great, but I don't care) I never had a single hiccup out of this machine. Now that I think about it...I've never loaded the 4in1 drivers and had MB's from manufactuers across the board, never used Intel anything, and I've never had a problem in any of my systems. All ran rock solid.
Both of my parents have always worked to 5 pm, or more often, later. I got involved, by most standards fanatically so, in computers right when Doom II came out, when I was 14...mainly because of Doom II. I've yet to mistake anyone, classmates or otherwise, for clay pigeons. I agree that parents have a lot to do with it, but both of them working to keep me eating doesn't have a Damn thing to do with it.
There was one release of mandrake (7.0?) that had an "automatic" option during the install. Basically, you have some unpartitioned space on your drive, click automatic, hope and pray it found all your hardware, reboot half and hour later, and log in. Don't know why, but that impressed the hell outta me. Especially since it found all my hardware.:)
I don't know which CompUSA you visit, but everytime I've asked one of their employees a question, I feel dumber than when I walked in there. I could literally feel my IQ drop a couple points...:)
Actually, I am one who suffers from the glasses deal...if my glasses aren't on, I can't hear. Sounds strange, but really makes since. My hearing isn't that great either. I found out I am subconciously (sp?) reading lips. One of my coworkers has the same condition.
He may be a liar...in fact, you're probably gonna call me one too, but the fact of the matter is, it *is* possible. In fact, I did it. I just spent twice as much building this machine than I could have building it with generic parts. In fact, it was just as stable under Win98(First Edition) as it was Linux.

You obviously haven't used XP...very damn little is in the same place as before (at least in the default installation)...except the start button.

There's supposedly a keyboard coming out in a couple months...run to Google for details.
I'm sorry, I can't help it, but...I'm thinking "very large capacitors." :)
Heh, on /.? That's about the best comment I've read tonight. :)
I'm going to assume (sorry...this is /.) that by "Amazing" at the end of your post, you are surprised. Just to reiterate...this is slashdot. :)
I also have never had any trouble with Creative hardware...it just works...

I believe it is...
Reminds me of when they're DNS servers were hac^H^H^H altered. They said it may have been a DoS or a failing router...
It is an X10 remote: The executable to "activate" it is...wait for it...ATIX10.EXE :)
Perform a search for GATOS (Generic ATI TV Overlay Something). very nice proggy
I've always used 'xf86config' to configure X There is a warning...in fact, a few if I recall correctly...
That's kinda strange...I just downloaded the update about 2 days ago...if you lose the base drivers, then they send you a cd...
Whoa...Datura...haven't heard that one in a while...I didn't think anyone else knew what that was anymore...

As offtopic as it may be...I have to agree...
PS/2 is not supposed to be hot swapped...in fact, I've heard and witnessed several accounts of frying ports when it is done...

A more accurate comparison...go get a new video card and try to use it under Windows 3.1. :)
