  1. Why can't the lander survive longer? on Mars Rover Rolls And Turns · · Score: 3, Interesting

The article says that more than likely the lander will run out of power because there will not be enough sun to power the solar panels in the Martian winter. My question is, is there no possibility of the lander "comming back to life" after the Martian winter?

It would be really great for slashdot to have a Q&A with the Mars rover designers and engineers. I'd love to ask questions about the type of CPU/OS used. How the optics differ from your standard digital camera (other than being expensive and high quality) and so forth. Anybody want to second that? There is some information on the engineering specs, but it's very spotty it seems and hard to find!

  4. Gamepads suck....the old Atari Joystick rulz! on Cheap, Rugged, Multiplayer Gamepads for Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe it's because the first computer games I played were on the Atari 2600, but I've never been able to get used to the gamepad. It's always HELL on my thumbs! I really LOVED the old Atari Joystick! Especially after you broke it in. Does anybody know of one of those that could be modified to work on a PC?

Does anybody else out there feel the same way?

My preference might not be specifically tied specifically to the 2600 game controller. Epyx made a 2600 controller (I think it was the 500XJ?) that was a 2600/C64 type controller with ergonomic design and "clicky" precision when you moved the stick into the right position.

With the Epyx controller I DESTROYED people in the Bitmap brother's "Speedball deluxe"!

  6. Sound and many games! on Commodore 64 Emulator For Your Palm Pilot · · Score: 5, Interesting

Does the emulator support the C64's sound?

    And...

The reason this is such a big deal is because the low resolution of the C64 looks just fine on a small screen. It looks like crap on a VGA monitor because most games of that era were designed with TV in mind. Many of those games looked better because the black line on every other scan line was a sort of "anti-aliasing" which made many of those games look nice.

Also, there were MAJOR titles released for the C64 that would NEVER be writing for the Palm. Like the Ultima Series (up to Ultima 6...I think?).

  12. How I lost 40 lbs in the last 5 months.. on Hackers On Atkins · · Score: 1

I'm a self admitted geek. Most people don't want to hear this, but if you want to lose weight, you have to count calories. People HATE to hear that. But you have a certain amount you burn each day and to lose weight you have to eat less than that caloric amount. Although it is'nt good for you, you can lose weight eating twinkies, so long as the caloric total from your twinkies is less than the total calories you burn per day. This is true with ANY food. What I found out is that FAT/SUGARY foods have by weight and mass the highest amounts of calories in them, so If you want to be full when you eat you naturally gravitate towards low fat foods because they are bulkier and are lower in calories.

I cut my calories to 1500 per day, nor more than 500 per meal. And this is important, you CAN'T just eat 1500 calories in one sitting and then wait till 12:01am the next day and do it again. You have to be consistant and spread it out.

I weighed 194LBS and I was PORKING out...now I'm 154lbs and feel great! The first three weeks are the hardest. But once you've trained your brain for a new habit it's not that hard!

One more thing people forget about the Atkins diet, its also NO ALCHOHOL and NO SUGAR!!!

If all you want to do is lose a quick 10 lbs...switch to diet soda if you have not already done so....trust me on this, it works!
