Born in the US, went to public school K-12 and I can say that yes, that is what they teach us. We are required to spend a year in high school studying "US History" and are also required to spend a year studying "World History". Other than that, when you're in elementary school you learn things like Thanksgivings day really happened and it isn't a myth like scholarly research might tell you. Honestly I've only heard of the Greek democracies, but we certainly didn't spend any time actually studying them or how they were organized, there was a brief mention of it, but no great thanks and respect taught. But we did spend a year with our required "Government" class in high school... learning words like bicameral and how the constitution was written.

Really, learning wasn't enjoyable to me at all until after I got out of school. Then I started making up for all the stuff they never taught me. I had it better than the kids now do, a month or two ago kids I know from two different school districts in two different states both told me they spent everyday studying for the upcoming standardized school exams. They teachers now literally throw aside the normal studies and focus for an entire month on gaming the school rankings tests. These kids know the test is coming up and that's all they do until it's over with. Really sad that they don't focus on educating people and teaching them how to think, instead they focus on rote memorization and repeating what you heard. Mighty convenient that.

I don't think religion has anything to do with it. More likely it's confusion on the whole cause vs correlation thing. Hey even scientists sometimes confuse the two.

News: Bees are dying in great numbers!
Reaction: What's changed recently? Ahah! Global warming! Cell phones! VoIP! AppleTV!

It's really natural to think "What's different?" when something bad happens for the first time in memory. Even if the whole world was atheist I can't imagine things would be much different. Unless you assume everyone would automatically have an I.Q. of 150. Not all atheists are intelligent after all. ;-)

But recall that the iPhone is actually running Leopard. They've gained practical experience with Resolution Independence and will be able to tweak the final OS even better. This is confirmed by the latest builds removing the brushed metal UI. That don't scale, but the iTunes 7 interface can easily be zoomed and kept crisp. The iPhone also practically guarantees that later versions of the iMac will come with a multi-touch screen. Remember when that video came out last year and everyone was going nuts over it? We drooled over the picture stretching, and later BAM there it is on the iPhone. Hell they have to redo not only half the OS but also half the apps to work with this. iPhone is just the warmup man.

It's just everybody waiting for Leopard to come out. Besides that, rumors of new iMac enclosures and possible multi-touch screens. It's always slow before Macworld or WWDC. Given that MS just came out with their own new OS, it's no surprise that pent up demand for that lead to slightly higher sales.

  16. Cringe? on Top 12 Operating Systems Vulnerability Survey · · Score: 4, Insightful
    Hardly.

By default, Apple OS X does not have its built-in servers enabled. For testing the standard binaries, Personal File Sharing, Windows Sharing, Personal Web Server, Remote Login, FTP Access, Apple Remote Desktop, Remote Apple Events and Printer Sharing were all enabled through the Preferences tool. Although OS X features a robust implementation of IPFW (Internet Protocol FireWall), it was not enabled.53 After enabling the services, Nmap identified the freshly opened ports and Nessus found only a user enumeration vulnerability in the HTTP server.

    Then somehow this :

As far as straight-out-of-box conditions go, both Microsoft's Windows and Apple's OS X are ripe with remotely accessible vulnerabilities

    The immediately following sentence :

Even before enabling the servers, Windows based machines contain numerous exploitable holes allowing attackers to not only access the system but also execute arbitrary code. Both OS X and Windows were susceptible to additional vulnerabilities after enabling the built-in services.

So how does "straight-out-of-box vulnerable" and "after enabling built-in services" make any sense?
Sure there's pre-patch vulnerabilities for all 2 year old OS' out there... hardly makes me cringe however.
