Problem is most folks actually care more about these topics than WMD, intelligence manipulations, torture, political corruption/bribery, or sole source contracts. Seems like most folks pick one side of the fence and then anyone who questions ANY decision becomes an evil liberal or neo-con with some secret, political agenda.
Bread and Circuses my friend... keep em happy and entertained and you can do whatever you want. Just think how good it worked for Rome.
Wow uhhhh... the response from you guys has been OVERWHELMING... UNPRECEDENTED really... just WOW! And ummm... yeah, ya know, the economy has been kinda harsh lately and times are hard for everyone these days so ummmm... sorry, we just can't send you those USB drives we promised. Sorry.
Okay, now next on the agenda... what should we do with this $35 Billion cash burning a hole in our pockets? Any suggestions?
Ummm... no offense guys, but I see all these posts full of "Well DUH!" responses. You should be looking for holes in this, not immediately declaring your support. Isn't scientific progress made by disagreeing with theories and looking for mistakes in them?
And you wonder why creationists call evolution faith.
That's nothing, I'm going to patent the idea of Patents and then shut down the US Patent Office.
Let's see here... A process for the purpose of encouraging economic growth via the granting of temporary exclusivity of novel ideas.
Only problem is, after I take them down... we're only safe until my patent expires, then all the little tiny pieces of the patent offfice slither back together and reassemble themselves.
Where are you guys getting this idea that the Acid2 test is all about error handling? It's a very small part of the test, but plenty of Slashdotters seem convinced that the test revolves around broken code and nothing else. Was there a weekly meeting I missed wher eyou all got this myth drilled into your heads?
They're just angry Safari got it before Mozilla, so they spread FUD to minimize Apple's accomplishments. "Oh but Acid2 doesn't MEAN anything." It's just a case of picking the benchmarks you like because they make who you like look good.
You mentioned avoiding null bytes, I seem to recall reading that on PPC that's much harder to pull off because of many RISC ops tend to have a byte of null padding that smaller CISC ops don't need. So besides having to learn a new asm, its also much harder to exploit... PPC did have a real advantage here.
I'd imagine eye-contact and speaking at the right time is very important culturally, especially in the Yakuza. Yeah I could see turning around while someone is talking you being a fast way to die. Then again there may be times when you are insulted and must react appropriately to keep your respectm maybe there IS a time to turn around when someone is talking to you, but listen for the sound of a sword being unsheithed or a gun coming out of hostler.
I was a little worried about the accuracy of the pointer and if it would actually hand 3d movement well enough to work. Then someone comes along and says.... the new controller works well with first person shooter games like Metroid Prime, but, currently, falls short in the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Morris' impression is that this setback can be rectified by 'optimization.'
Well GREAT! (In a good way) Obviously in a shooter the aiming bit of control is THE game, whereas in Zelda most of the development is in the puzzles and the control isn't the highest priority. But it CAN work well enough, it senses good enough to really be usable and live up to our expectations.
I just worry about tearing the thing apart if I swing my arms away from each other... but I'm sure third party cords will be longer.
Naw man, that's just a REALISTIC rendering of how their server would respond if each connection was like a shot from a BB gun. That's some seriously FINE GRAINED Physics processing!
Okay, so what's up with the "Time started here." thing? If there was an infinity of time before this event happened, then obviously time was already around. Wouldn't it really mean "Nothing of any significance could happen because all the matter in this universe was stuck in one little ball for a long long time, THEN once things started moving we call it 'Time'"? Really if there was no time before the bang, then what do you call that moment just before it happened? In other words, if there was no time, wouldn't it be frozen with no Big Bang ever happening? Time would have to already exist for it's state to change. Now I admit I'm totally ignorant here, this is just my "common sense" view on time, not saying I'm right... so somebody enlighten me please on how there could be "NO TIME HERE" then next to it "TIME FROM HERE ON" on the timeline of the Universe.;)
Not sure on that one... I believe he sold his Intel iMac within a month or so after he got it once he realized he couldn't boot Windows on it. Heh... now THERE'S a guy who can see the future!
Hell, I suppose you could create a folder full of aliases and put that on the dock.
Actually I think most people put the Applications folder next to the trash in their dock, then right-click on it to get a "Start Menu"-ish list of all Apps. Mine is there right now, but I've been using Spotlight as a launcher since Tiger came out and it's faster than icon hunting.
SPAM filters are REAAAAAALLY annoying to me as a Sidekick user. The email servers are actually handed by Danger Inc, and I'm not sure exactly how it works but I think they're relayed through TMobile's servers or some other such weirdness so we can have a @tmail.com on our emails instead of @danger.com.
Problem is several ISPs block all emails from these devices. "Relaying Prohibited" or something like that. The one I know for certain is Mindspring, but strangely Earthlink emails get through just fine. I guess it's the goal of SPAMMERS to be so twisty and hard to identify that eventually all sorts of legitimate email gets filtered by mistake, at that point they'll simply have to stop blocking it.
An eagle-eyed developer may enjoy being able to have many open windows crammed into the same amount of space, but many of us would like our apps to remain more or less the same size and don't want to have to squint to read text.
That part is talking about YOU.
The full solution to this problem therefore is to allow your user interface to scale, with the scale factor being configurable by the user. This means that Web content has to be zoomable, with the entire page properly scaling based off the magnification chosen by the user.
This part is talking about ME. People with high DPI and not so great vision would like to be able to scale pages. If you RTFM you'd see that it's optional and he's suggested SVG... that is vector graphics as a BACKUP image to be used IF and only IF the user has configured their browser to "zoom" the websites for higher DPI. That way fonts look good and larger images look good too, yet they won't be sending huge GIF's and JPEGS, or even compressed PNGs, instead you'll get a nice smooth 30k image that looks beautiful no matter what your resolution.
Well I've got a couple hundred DVD's I wouldn't mind archiving without re-compressing. That'll just about fill it... yep. Then there's the DV video I have, which I always have to delete after a project is finished because they fill my hard drives. There's also all those Linux distributions I have to delete right after I burn because space is always running out. There's a public domain torrents site full of old black and white movies I'd love to pull and have laying around for a rainy day. Then there's my CD collection which I wouldn't mind re-ripping loss-less, oh if only I had the space. Oh yeah, plus Virtualized HD images for my OS zoo...
Yeah, a terabyte is a lot of space but... I could definitely fill it right now if I had one.:-)
No doubt Microsoft did some coercion (though it wasn't illegal), but that's not why Microsoft won. Microsoft won because they were COMPATIBLE. Pure and simple. Windows 3.1 killed all the competition at the time because it was the most compatible with DOS. Windows 95 killed everything because it was STILL the most compatible with DOS and Windows 3.1.
People don't want to throw away their whole software investment. No one cares about operating systems -- they care about applications, which is what they use for *work*. All people see of operating systems is that it's a program launcher.
Interesting... so now Apple sells THE most compatible PC you can buy. If you're right then eventual migration is inevitable.
Those of you calling this a troll are revealing your own anti-Windows biases. Who's the troll, the one who assumes there's some nice programs on Windows they don't know about, or the ones who laugh at him and say there are none? Sad really.
Alright, assume you've used Macs for years and have always heard how Windows is better because of all those thousands of applications you poor Mac users can't run.:-/ Hrmmm... well there must be SOMETHING they've been lucky to have all those years. I'm a bit curious too, as a Mac user with my Mac Book... but I prefer Parallels to dual-booting.
Anyways... Off the top of my head, there's AutoCAD, Outlook, maybe WinAmp or Media Player Classic... I'm using Imtoo DVD to iPod ripper since it lets me pull individual chapters in batch mode and make a different file for each one instead of ripping the whole DVD outright. (Yeah iSquint and Handbrake are nice, but they don't have everything I need yet)
I don't know! I'm not a Windows user... but I know a huge percentage of Slashdot visitors are. What have you guys got? A sweet Usenet downloader? Better DVD ripping / burning software? IRC Chat programs? Emulators? Goodness there's a HUGE section of Windows software on SourceForge, I KNOW some of you guys are using it, enlighten us please.
And it's a serious question, Boot Camp requires a minimum of 5GB Windows partition, so we may as well fill up the left over 2 or 3 gigs with decent software otherwise the space is totally wasted.
Bread and Circuses my friend... keep em happy and entertained and you can do whatever you want. Just think how good it worked for Rome.

Scorpions? Long passageways? If you find a Mayan temple down there DO NOT GO INSIDE.
And half of that space is their copywrite notice at the beginning of every file.

James Dobson, you know, the guy of Spongebob Squarepants is a conspiracy to turn kids gay fame.
;-)
Spongebob isn't... but Ren & Stimpy was.

I multiplied 3 and 1,000 in hex and I still got 3,000. So was THAT a coincidence too??
ALSO... 3141 in hex is C45 if you divide that by FF you get C!
For the first time FMS is starting to make sense to me.

It's actually called a grizzlar
Yeah but the POINT is... like ligers, do grizzlars have magical powers?
genetic tests showed the bear had a polar bear for a mother and a grizzly bear for a father.
Those grizzlys... always going after the blondes.

Completely different target markets. E3 is only big for gamers and geeks, Apple doesn't market to them, they want "Everybody else".
