I know the popular opinion here is typically pro-Apple/iTMS/iPod but honestly I just don't see why we can be pro-reverse engineering on everything else and not this.
I don't see why people keep targeting Apple's DRM and not all the WMA stuff out there.
Crack Apple's DRM, you get to listen to the songs you already paid for in the program and OS of your choice.
Crack MS' DRM, you get to listen to any song you want for a small subscription fee.
Clear advantage in cracking a subscription based DRM. Why isn't it done?
"This is why vulnerabilities are so important," said Kaspersky. "We are against anyone who publishes vulnerabilities because it gives hackers a tool."
This pushes security discussion underground, but doesn't stop the bad guys, just leaves the administrators vulnerable and unaware. Very easy to spread this sort of propaganda however... hopefully it doesn't lead to laws being passed.
Replying to myself here... from the actual website with the pics (Which I didn't get to read cuz it was slashdotted)
We did a mock up of the iPod Flash in 3D. You can see how big it is compared to a business card (the same size as an iPod mini) and an Apple Firewire cable.
Human bodies were not created with death in mind. Adam and Eve, and their offspring, were meant to be immortal.
You mean that they were intended to live forever... no fleshly being could ever be immortal however, even if Adam and Eve had never eaten the fruit they would still be mortal. Jesus was certainly not "immortal" while on earth. Immortal really means CAN'T die. Clearly they did.
Primate sign language is not as advanced as we're lead to believe... they often "babble" and the handlers pick and chose words that fit the interpretation they are trying to deliver... and ignore the nonsense words. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/030328.html/ Mentions some of this. I've talked to some deaf people who have met Koko and tried to communicate and unless you're engaged in some serious wishful thinking it does NOT use sign language in any sense more than a parrot uses english when it says "Polly wants a cracker." So yes it uses a Pavlov response and knows that certain gestures will get it certain things, much as a dog can be taught to sit, roll over and beg. It's hardly language. I like the "nipple is a rhyme for people" bit in that straight dope account of Koko's internet chat adventure.:-)
(In fact that's the name of the human soul: the "speaker".)
I'd just like to point out that soul literally means "breather" not "speaker". And that if you really want to get serious about "soul" and what it means you need to take into account that in the hebrew language the term is applied to all living breathing creatures on earth. Of course most people's bibles that are translated into English doesn't use the term soul every time it's written in hebrew, instead it's substituted with "life", "person", "creature", etc... here's a few pointer scriptures to look into if someone wants to see how the term soul is really applied in the scriptures. Far from some mystical energy force inside one's body, it simply means a living fleshly being.
Gen.1:20 (First use of soul, applied to fish) Gen.1:24 (Soul applied to animals on the earth) Gen.2:7 (Adam becomes a "living soul") Nu. 6:6 (A nazarite may not touch a "dead soul" meaning a dead body)
Now I know in most bibles you'll see "creature" and "dead body" instead of soul, but if you're curious enough to look up the actual word in hebrew you'll see nephesh which is "soul". So in the context of the current discussion about "manimals" or whatever you want to call a chimera... no it does not HAVE a soul... but in that sense neither do humans, they ARE souls just as we are, and every other living creature on earth. If you want some criteria for what makes us human and them not... you'll have to chose another word to use for a litmus test sorry.
You should know that practically every fact, place and event mentioned in the Bible has been disputed over the years until the neccesary evidence has been dug up. The Pilate coins do not have his name imprinted on them, they are NOW named after him because we know that he was ruling at that time in Jerusalem and had them minted.
My post was not written in defense of the Bible however, I was only asserting that a single known historical account of something doesn't mean that it was invented by that person. I was using examples from another ancient historical document which had been attacked with various claims that have since been proven groundless. As for Pontius Pilate's historicity being doubted, here's a magical quote from a magical time for you...
"Another example of a discovery that confirms the historicalness of a person mentioned in the Bible is given by Michael J. Howard, who worked with the Caesarea expedition in Israel in 1979. "For 1,900 years," he wrote, "Pilate existed only on the pages of the Gospels and in the vague recollections of Roman and Jewish historians. Next to nothing was known about his life. Some said he never even existed. But in 1961, an Italian archaeological expedition was working in the ruins of the ancient Roman theater in Caesarea. A workman overturned a stone that had been used for one of the stairways. On the reverse side was the following, partially-obscured inscription in Latin: 'Caesariensibus Tiberium Pontius Pilatus Praefectus Iudaeae.' (To the people of Caesarea Tiberium Pontius Pilate Prefect of Judea.) It was a fatal blow to the doubts about Pilate's existence. . . . For the first time there was contemporary epigraphic evidence of the life of the man who ordered the crucifixion of Christ."
Anyone who has read Josephus knows these claims to be false. He wrote to the Greeks using non-Hebrew sources to prove the age of his people. History from the Egyptians, the Greeks, Phoenicians and others all showing historical meetings with kings such as Solomon and David. Biblical accounts such as the Queen of Sheba coming to visit Solomon were actually mentioned in the records of the visiting person as well. Specifically I'm talking about "Against Apion" which was written around A.D. 93-100, in which he answers those who made similar claims 2,000 years ago. "The Jews did not come from Egypt, they are just a bunch of nomads", "They haven't been around that long, they just popped up the other day".
It doesn't cost anything to sow doubt and disbelief... and it takes only a second to claim something is a lie, much easier than actually examining the evidence. (Those claims sell a book much better too)
There was nothing more to it. No other historians wrote about it, none of Plato's contemporaries made any mention of it.
You mean those of his comtemporaries whom we currently have knowledge of did not write about Atlantis?
You can find dozens of examples of names and places written about in the bible that many claimed were fairy tales since there were no other records of them. Pontius Pilate, Belshazzar, etc...
In this case the believer of the historical document takes the same stance as the evolutionist waiting for the right fossil to be found... perhaps additional evidence is actually buried out there somewhere, often it is found. To say simply "There is only one document claiming this, it must be false!" is simply unrealistic.
there is open-source software that can play these protected AAC files... for example VLC. It's just that Apple is preventing it from being "drag and drop easy". Simply a matter of locating the keys and running them through the right program. It's similar to Apple's burning restrictions... only there to "keep honest people honest", but are also easily worked around.
I remember the power usage and heat generation was lower than the competition... they were able to save a lot of money on cooling systems by going with the G5's. That has to be saving them a lot of money day to day. I don't have the wattage numbers on hand right now, but I do remember G5's beating P4's, Opterons and especially Xeons, so there's no way Virgina Tech is paying what those x86 top ten people are in energy bills. The XServe's keep track of their fans and internal temperature, automatically letting the admin know when a machine is GOING TO FAIL and preemptively swap out faulty components before they cause serious damage to the systems. I don't know what sort of Apple Care that kind of system comes with, but I'm sure it's competitive with their consumer systems, I'd imagine any hardware failures are completely covered absolutely free for at least the first year, probably three or more if they pay Apple for any support.
During the YDL 3.0 days I was in touch with their support people, who personally told me that firewire booting would be fully supported in YDL 4.0
Can anyone verify that this has been completed?
Of course I mean without partitioning the internal disk and setting up some funky bootloader... the ability to plug it in and boot externally from any ole Mac. If it does that I would be willing to pay for it, otherwise... no can do.
Yeah, we all know iPod buys have never bought a CD before in their lives... "Oh where EVER shall I find some music?"
I have about 100 CD's and that's really not a lot... even my grandma has that many and she hardly buys them that often. So both of us can fill a Mini without even getting our whole library on them nor buying a single song from iTMS.
I remember hearing about half the sales on iTMS were albums... so CLEARLY internet downloads aren't killing the album. However... that means for every whole CD bought off iTMS with 10 - 15 songs on it... there were 10 - 15 x as many people buying only singles. That's where my purchases have been, one hit wonders and songs I've heard years ago and can't find in stores. The album I bought I already own on tape, but it seems to have never been re-released on CD. Still I've bought more "albums" than singles. Anyways... less than $20 on the store, and I could fill a Mini no sweat. Hardly rich.
Everybody is asking why compete with Spotlight... I say power grab. Get it out before Longhorn, get it out before Tiger... cash in on the google brand-name. There's more coming, this is just getting their foot in the door. A few years ago they could've really gone for the whole enchillada with a tactic like this... now... prob too late. Any thoughts?
I'm not trying to scare anyone here but... hearing while swimming can mean your life! Wearing these could prevent you from hearing the SHARK MUSIC start and getting OUT of the water in time! These should be banned... or at least come with a VERY strong warning on the label.
AIFF, WAV, MP3, MP3 VBR, AAC, Apple Lossless and Audible.
I guess VBR counts since some MP3 players don't support it? Not whoring here, I just get sick of people thinking they are locked into Apple formats. The list also reminds others of what their players can't handle... like audiobooks.
Actually Macs DO come with a Manual... there's at least two of them... maybe 20 pages or so, I don't have one around here. The Mac OS X manual was enough to get grandma more comfortable with using iPhoto and Mail. They are printed on nice paper in full color with huge screenshots on every page. Very nice noobie-talk guiding a user through basic stuff. The other manual is specific to the model you bought... shows how to add memory and an airport card, things like that.
This may be just a wee bit offtopic, but it may be my only chance to ask...
Who remembers HSLink?? If I recall correctly it was an add-on transfer method for Procomm Plus. It allowed two people connected over a modem to simultaneously send files to each other at basically double the normal speed. I remember thinking it had to be a scam, but me and my friends tested it and were able to send double the usual info in whatever time we were used to. (I forget, 10 minutes a meg I think)
How did this work? Were we fooled or was it for reals? Could something like that be applied to dial-up internet connections?
I don't really get this, looking at the rules it seems the best outcome is to screw people over. Cooperation gives small wins for both... is this just to illustrate a zero-sum game or is this supposed to actually model real-life social interaction? I do not believe that in reality if everyone cooperated there would be a small payoff for all, and that the secret to life is to screw unto others. I know the situation is two prisoners being interogated, which is not the same as say... two neighbors fighting over leaves falling on each other's lawns from opposite tress for example. Yet it seems to be used as a general society model for human interaction. Notice
A common view is that the puzzle illustrates a conflict between individual and group rationality. A group whose members pursue rational self-interest may all end up worse off than a group whose members act contrary to rational self-interest.
So there it implies that the prisoners dilemma parallels everyday living and society, and yet it is not really an appropriate model for day to day life is it? Maybe I'm missing the point here, it just seems the message is "Being a selfish jerk is better than a nice guy, so live appropriately".
They were deprived of learning an existing sign language because they are deprived, not as the result of any experiment.
Ummm... no, they are a living experiment. These kids are still kept isolated from learning any foreign signs and anyone deaf who visits them is forced to wear mittens and not make any facial expressions. It's kind of sick that they aren't allowed to know anything about the outside world for the sake of someone's research project.
As for the second generation of children adding syntax and so forth, I believe this can be explained by the fact that unlike their older peers, they were not raised in an environment lacking language, and hence were able to take more advantage of those crucial first 5 years of life. It's common to meet deaf in the United States whose hearing parents didn't allow them to learn sign language, and whose mental development is permanently stunted from this... they NEVER catch up. Deaf who are exposed to language and/or other deaf at an early age flourish.
Isolated deaf are actually common throughout the world... roughly 90% of deaf children have hearing parents, many of whom think their children are retarded and basically leave them at home 24/7 until it's time to go to 1st grade. And guess what... they ALL have their own invented language it's called "home signs" and many of them are quite unique. Oh believe me the deaf know all about isolated communities forming languages.
I know the popular opinion here is typically pro-Apple/iTMS/iPod but honestly I just don't see why we can be pro-reverse engineering on everything else and not this.

That in the middle is an Apple Pro mouse with a click-wheel pasted on top.
:-)
Apple isn't releasing a display-less iPod... too frustrating to navigate through songs.
I also happen to have a business card here (heh) and the size shown in the picture leaves you with a really finger crimping wheel to use.
Anyways... I DUB THEE... iPill!
