Um. I'd venture no. A nice bit of presupposition there. My point was that if he truly didn't care about what people think about what he wears, then he wouldn't feel the need to spout off at the mouth about it.
I don't think he should care. It doesn't bother me that he doesn't care. It doesn't bother me that people don't care. It's not really a big deal. However, when someone feels the need to run around, bitching about how much they don't give a fuck about something and that people who do give a fuck are just fucking stupid (that was the impression I got. Maybe I presupposed too much?), then I'd say they're lying. They do care about it. They think about it. Somewhere, deep inside, they need to face the fact that they give a fuck about it and either do something about it, or learn to deal with it.
I noticed on your website that you teach Latin dancing. That's great! I'm sure there's a million rednecks out there who probably think Latin dancing (and dancing in general) is for a bunch of fairy fags. Do you really care what they think? You might. But if you didn't, would you bother to stop and tell them that they're wrong and that "Latin dancing" is really a great way to exercise, a great place to meet women, and is really a lot of fun? (I say this as I plan to enroll in Salsa classes soon. Looks fun as hell to me). Do you walk down the street exclaiming "I don't care that you think I'm a fag for teaching Latin Dancing!!!" I doubt it.
Now, granted, maybe this is an anomoly for the OP. Maybe he's just having a bad day and reading this just caused him to lapse into a rant mode. (I'm currently unemployed due to a recent (last week) move). But the 3 or 4 other posts he's written appear that he's just trying to be some sort of internet bad-ass and is proud of the fact that he doesn't give a fuck about his appearance. Which means he does give a fuck about his appearance. I know people who don't give a fuck about their appearance. They don't mention how they don't give a fuck about their appearance. If someone (usually a female) asked them about it, the response was usually something like "huh? Oh, I dunno.. I guess I never thought about it.." and that was the end of that.
Obviously, by posting about it, you do care. In fact, I'd almost wager that if you do indeed dress as down as you seem to imply, that you do it intentionally, specifically to get this sort of reaction to you so you can go off on your little rant about how you don't give a fuck. It legitimizes your life-choices. Good luck with that.
Something tells me that Apple is going to use the craptastic Intel "ExtremeGraphics" chipset for video. I currently play World of Warcraft on an iBook, albeit at a low framerate (around 19-20.. good enough to play.. it's actually 1-2fps better than my old desktop). This would be exacty the kind of thing that Steve would do to quell my enthusiasm for the new iBooks. Please, Steve, if you're listening, put a REAL graphics chipset in the new iBooks! At *least* keep it on par with the current offerings! If you do, I promise I'll be ready on launch day, credit card firmly in hand.
I'd like to see more Sony->Apple partnerships, like, say, iTMS compatability. I know it's apple's cash-cow, but I'd buy a PSP if I could watch stuff I buy on iTunes. I've already got a nano, I'd rather have a more general purpose device than an iPod Video, especially one that can be a highly functional gaming device like the PSP. Now, if they'd just hurry up and start releasing more games...
Oddly enough, while I like Linux and can do "mundane" stereotypical things like recompile my kernal and what not, I still can't get linux to work on my desktop OOTB. My Orinoco? Not a single distro or live CD I've tried has figured out its there and needs to be configured. Ubuntu, Knoppix, FreeSBIE (I know, not Linux), you name it. I don't know what the problem is (Windows 2000/XP sees it just fine and configures it on install), but I have to do some serious finangling to get it to work. Nor does any Linux distro/live CD handle dual monitors well at all. In fact, I'd say one of the most frustrating things about X is the braindead configuration. Having to edit a file to enable dual monitors, resolutions, etc is a pain in the ass.
Now, having said that, everything else is pretty nice.:P
As a cross-platform gamer (I play WoW on both my desktop (PC) and my laptop (iBook), I'm really curious to know how many mac players are out there, and if it's financially viable for Blizzard to continue supporting the mac version.
a dual display capable mac mini would cause me to empty out my piggy bank and immediately drive to the local apple store. I almost pulled the trigger to pick one up when I realized that I have 2 21" monitors and I'd really not have a use for the other...
Ditto. My band has a page there and we've set up numerous shows with other bands coming through town strictly through myspace. I don't even bother updating our regular website anymore because the myspace site does everything we need it to.. for now.
For all the knocks Uwe Boll gets (and justifiably, I might add), I'm sure he cries himself to sleep on a big mattress full of cash every night. Makes me wonder if I'm in the wrong business...
Well, on my system, Firefox has a tendency to lock-up once a day or so. I have to kill the process in task manager, and it takes a few moments to do so. Loading it for the first time after a reboot seems to take forever, and if I try and load it twice, both windows will then pop up instantaneously. Really bizarre. But everything works aside from those 2 anomalies.
He's an "internet executive", which means his time is probably worth MUCH more than the average/.er and it's easier to dump an hour's worth of pay on a new system than futz with it. He probably has a family that he actually spends time with, as well.:(
What's "wrong" is the fact that many workers in these countries "taking our jobs" do not compete on an even level as ourselves. They do not have an equivalent of OSHA to keep the working environment somewhat safe, and chains/locks off the doors in case of a fire. They do not have the equivalent of the EPA to regulate the release of toxins into the communities around them. They do not have things like "labor rights" that ensure they can go home on the weekend, or even a paid vacation every once in a while, and forget about medical benefits. And the governments in place are determined to keep their "labor" advantage, so they squash any mention of unions, which exist precisely for these reasons.
What I don't understand is how a so-called "enlightened" slashdotter can be in such a hurry to race towards the bottom of the barrel. How someone can sit there and point to some schmuck working 90 hours a week and say that's some sort of nobility in that. To not understand that labor comes with a price, and humans do not live to just perform some mundane labor. At least we'd hope not. When you finally get a family (good luck with that and your 90 hour weeks for nothing) to support, let us know how many hours you enjoy working.
For me, work is a necessary "evil" that I do so I can afford to do things in my spare time. I learned a long time ago that working 100 hours a week didn't do anything but waste my life.
Last I checked, there is quite a bit commercial software available for linux and you most certainly could be BSA audited for it. In fact, I would ponder to guess that if you have a business and you have any sort of IT, then they can legally audit you under current rules (right or wrong). Sad.:(
Back when I did tech support, I'd say 90% of the problems I encountered were software configuration issues, not hardware. When you're calling tech support, it only stands to reason that you actually buy hardware from the manufacturer, which is why people want to know your serial # and address information: Is this our shit? As a lot of software issues can be solved regardless of vendor, it's important they don't waste time/money on someone else's stuff. Surprisingly enough, I had people with Gateways trying to get support from Dell.:/
And the other P1120 owners out there thank you very much for generating a ton of interest on eBay from/.'ers checking out what's available and for how much. Prices should be inflated for a week or so now.:)
Nerds come in all flavors with diverse interests. Understand that just about any interest in anything that resides in the umbrella of science is looked up on with disdain by "mainstream" America. Scientists, in any field, are generally regarded as "nerds" by your typical MBA.
I have a great interest in botony, ichthyology (killifish, pupfish, goodeids), and ecology in addition to the standard "geek" computer/technology interests.
While a lot of guys look at stuff like the Zaurus as something they can show off to their peers (?) as running linux, or do something asinine like ssh to their server to show people their uptimes (and I suppose some people do work on them), I see it as a potential field data collection computer. If I desired, I could write custom software and drivers for to aid in data collection, etc.
So, in essence, I'd rather see articles on "extinct" wildflowers than blatant advertisements. It's a nice addition, mkay?
Actually, I was thinking that during the day they'd have a large "solar array" that would direct sunlight like a giant magnifying glass at the water/turbine grid. There's something similar out in the desert somewhere already in use.

Hrm.. I'm not sure about the underground sweating of the pipes (dont' remember that in the article), but the article mentions that what he intends to do is evaporate some of the seawater into steam, which powers turbines, then cooling the steam with the remaining cold seawater, which will condense the water for usage in irrigation. Pure, desalinated water that has served to provide A/C, electricity, and then irrigation/potable water. That's sorta neat.
I did the same thing, except I took my parent's computer home with me to "fix" it and have yet to return it. They don't call me with computer problems anymore.
And you know this.. how? And you have hard numbers to back your assertions... from where? And you are... who?
Just as I'm likely to not believe any numbers the BSA/MPAA/RIAA produce, I sure don't just take the word of some random guy on/. that "everything's okay, everyone's just lying". You may have anecdotal evidence, but consider that I can go down to the laundromat and buy burned DVD's of whatever movie I need from a guy who has no clue what bittorrent is.
