This brings to mind the example of the himmalayan (sp?) rabbit. When raised at its normal (cold) temperature, its ears, nose and feet would be brown; BUT when raised at a warmer temperature, it would be white. Also, if a patch of fur were shaved from the rabbit's side, and an icepack were applied, then that area would also grow in brown...

Well it turns out that the enzyme that the himmalayan allele codes for denatures at a warmer temperature, so in cold temperatures, the rabbit's extremities would be the only part of the rabbit that were brown (body heat was lower at those points).

Anyway, the point is, that DNA codes for proteins, it isn't as definitive as people believe it is. Nature can easily affect the proteins/enzymes/whatever to react differently.

You will see that they do everything according to the Microsoft Excel handbook. They won't teach you concepts, just "how to do it."

Because they assume you are an idiot, and they intend to teach you the "standard business applications" (Office).

And THAT is why most businessess use Windows/Office.

My father, who is in his 50's, has spent quite a bit of time using microsoft windows. In his job, Windows/Office were standards. Recently his Sony Vaio died on him (well, Windows died, but thats another story) and he decided to switch to an iMac.

Well, he has been using the iMac for a couple of months now, and has most of it figured out, without any help from me. I just gave him one helpful hint (that the power button was in the back).

Maybe Mac OSX isn't as different from Windows as Linux is, but I think that if an old-dude like my dad can figure out how to use an OS that looks and feels different from Windows, then almost anyone should.

The secret is not to train people to use applications in the way most people learn, (point here, click there, etc), adnd instead teach them the finer points of how a computer works in general. Or let them figure it out for themselves in the first place.

I find it irredeemable that a college/university or a professor would consider this appropriate, especially before attempting a more polite solution. On slashdot, many of us would condemn an access provider for any type of filtering or blocking. How can we put up with such closed-minded solutions from academia? Such tactics only setup a technological arms race between students and administrators.

Sounds about right. My school allows professors to enable a firewall to block access to the internet from their class. But we soon discovered that some stuff just wasn't disabled (Warcraft, certain filesharing and obscure chat programs), and those were still better than paying attention. Some students even found ways to disable the firewall (it apparently wasn't too difficult).

After a semester at Babson College where every student is issued a laptop, every seat has an ethernet port and every class requires attendance, I feel the need to comment.

Some teachers are just boring. Some classes just didn't really require my attendance. Learned more from playing Warcraft 3 in my accounting class than i could have had I paid attention (mostly because I had already taken it in high school).

Professors that require me to show up, and require me to pay attention/ participate once I am there seriously need to re-evaluate their job description. I am not in there class for there sake, I am there for my own, they should cater to their students, who each pay around $30k per year for the privilege. Rather than removing my internet access in class, the professor should strive to be more interesting than the internet.

In the really good classes that I had, everyone showed up, and internet access was never disabled. In the boring ones, attendance was sketchy and the professor always blocked internet access.

Umm, last time i checked humans are biological organisms and therefore a part of nature, therefore, any species that is/was hunted to extinction by humans would be no different than if it were hunted to extinction by wolves or bears. Species become extinct because they are no longer viable in their environment, I know it looks ans sounds sad, but extinction is a natural process that helps to drive evolution, even when it is caused by humans.

With that said, I don't think we should go around willy-nilly killing animals and cutting down forests, etc. However, I think we should let nature take its course, if a species is extinct, let it stay extinct, and if it is on the verge of extinction, let it go extinct. If whales beach themselves, don't push them back in the water, let them die... thats nature, anything else is human interference. We are a predatory species, thats how evolution made us, and so far it has worked.

This fall I will be a freshman at Babson College, the school right next to FW Olin. Babson has a unique relationship with this school for a number of reasons, first is that Babson has in the past recieved donations from the FW Olin Foundation. Babson's campus is also located adjacent to the FW Olin campus and many of the resources (educational and recreational) will be shared. I think this is an extraordinary opportunity for two schools with a limited educational scope (Babson is a business school) to provide their students with a broader education through cross-registration and other programs.

Personally, I am looking forward to being next door to the most innovative engineering school in the country.

Anyway, while bridges and tunnels between NY and NJ remain propular, they are certainly not the quickest or most convenient way to get to the city.
