There's nothing magical about something frozen that somehow makes it a better heat sink than something that's not frozen. A large body of frozen land at -1C has 2 degrees more capacity than one at 1C, no more, no less.
Nothing magical no, just the way the world works. I seem to remember from chemistry that there are heat capacity inflection points at phase changes. I don't have time to look up the numbers, but taking a block of ice at -1 to water at +1 takes a lot more energy than taking same amount of water from 1 to 3 degrees C. The effect at the boiling point is much greater.
Have you ever taken a chemistry class? Or physics? One of those should do.

Swing applications still usually look they were created by children with crayons. If not that bad, then they still don't look as good on average as an SWT application.
IntelliJ sucks. Its the IDE without any concept of "background thread". Instead, it shows developers helpful tips to distract users that they are blocked from getting any work done while something builds.
The schedule strikes me as strange why is there a built in six year gap between soyuz phase out (2014) and first manned clipper flight (2020) Plus why does it take the world until 2018 to get back to the moon, when it only took less than ten years last time? Some progress.
And there's probably been an even larger increase in overall load, causing satelite's slice of the pie to shrink, regardless if the satelite load has increased.
Now I in no way condone child pornography, but producing statistics w/o context for comparison is ridiculous: "The FBI has seen a 2,000 percent increase in the number of child pornography images on the Internet since 1996" What's the percentage increase in non-child porn on the internet since 1996? The percentage increase in pictures period? 2,000 percent seems like it could be a lower bound, but who really knows? That quote makes it sound like the world is under a deluge of child porn, when in fact one could argue that the internet is just getting bigger.
so with a gig of space, it'll be even harder to find anything in my inbox on Yahoo. Their search is slow and just plain doesn't find things.
Whereas on google, a fast search can find any email.
Of the new line, only the old mono ipod comes with a firewire cable now - the new minis come with only USB 2 cable as do the photos. A recognition that USB 2 is good enough? Just a reflection that the lions share are users are on windows boxes w/o firewire anyways?
For a while now, there have been computers (IBM ThinkPad) that won't boot unless you give the password, but you could always rip out the hard drive and read it, right?
not so much. if the drive is password protected, you aren't reading it anywhere.
Electrolisys isn't a real source description anyways, in that in doesn't account for the fuel burned in order to generate the electricity. Apparently this system is really inefficient. Theres a really efficient way to make hydrogen involving high pressure/temperature water (800-900 degrees F) and iodine as a catalyst. Problem is you really need a nuclear reactor to create that kind of heat. Apparently this will still ultimately be one of the best ways to produce hydrogen in large quantities.
Another think I don't understand is why you have to pay a deposit (5 cents) for a bottle of soda or beer, but all these water bottles have no deposit? Seems to me that the deposit is there to encourage recycling, so why shouldn't it be applied to water as well?
IBM no longer ships standalone JDKs- according to the license with SUN, they only ship JDK included in a product. IBM will definately have a 1.5 JDK, just don't hold your breath.
Greatest tetris game ever - the 4x4 silver and gold blocks were awesome.

It would be great if every we product yahoo buys could conform to the yahoo music standard of requiring Netscape 4.7 on macs. Hooray for old school browsers!

Vista seems to be taken so many ways what about Americorp Vista

satelites carry next to no data or voice traffic anymore - its all fiber.
that's probably disk speed related. Doing lots of compilation on slow 4200 and 5400 rpm laptop drives is dumb.
I love the idea of downloadable games, because there are some real gems in nintendo's back-library.
more like wishlexia :)

why does the world need IE 7 on the mac? Safari is fine, and firefox is better. The mac can do without IE.

oh yeah, duh, forgot about those. for some reason i was thinking about around the house laser welding :)
From the article: "Thousands of inexpensive lasers used for home repair jobs were sold before Christmas, some for as little as $15."
What kind of home repair can you perform with a laser pointer?
You weighed down the lid? Were you afraid the router or its signal would have tried to open the lid if it were not weighted?
Because you can't remember the first part of your search?
You need to see it all so you can say to yourself, "damn that's a fine query"?
Honestly.
Besides if you screwed up the query, enter it again when you get to the search site. Deal.

Dude, Firefox has been kicking IE's ass all over the internet since like 0.7- take the leap already.
