Here in Rockdale County, Georgia (home of high-school syphillis problems and school shootings where the kid can't even manage 1 kill) we have a judge named Judge Nation. And he is every bit of the hardass that such a name suggests. When I first heard it, I really thought it had to be a joke.

I can see it happening...Scanner already keeps an analog scanner hooked up to his mixer during his performances, and blends it into the music when something fitting happens to come by.

I'm willing to bet that a significant portion of that is stuff that will not change...mp3s, movies, porno, whatever...it's all archives. DVD writers are finally getting relatively stable as for formats, and the drive and media prices are dropping.

I've got a 40GB mp3 collection. With 4.7GB/dvd, that's only 9 discs. As the collection grows, I burn supplemental discs when needed. Not too shabby, for the prices involved. Kicks DLT and Ultrium and DDS and whatever else tapewise is common nowadays.

I've heard people express emotion from a guitar. I've heard it from a saxophone. I've heard it in the trombone solo in a slow jazz song. Hell, I've heard it from computer-synthesized tones (care to disagree? listen to track 9 of the album Ovalprocess by Oval. About halfway through is a combination of tones and disconnected sounds that is so expressive it amazes me every time I hear it).

There's some great voices out there, but it is not the sole vehicle for musical emotion. The scale may have a finite number of notes, but there are infinite variations possible.

This isn't the sort of device that you'd use for extended typing. Think more along the lines of those tiny thumb-keyboards, or the foldable ones, that you can get for Palms and other handhelds. These already do decently in the marketplace because people want something a little faster than stylus input, but without the bulk of a full-size keyboard. It's really about portability, not ergonomics.

I can send out a memo to every department. I can make a couple phone calls to random users to see if they got the information, if they understood it, etc.

There will *still* be people who will run the damned attachment.

If someone walks off a cliff despite a big cluster of signs that say "DANGER! CLIFF AHEAD!", whose fault is it? I can't even bring myself to blame Microsoft for this anymore...or at least I am unwilling to assign all blame to them.

I hate Occam's Razor. It's really quite useless.

What's simpler, he decided to write a fake review based on information already available (scripts, preview, etc), or that some Lucasfilm goons dropped a secret note to him at a book signing, directing him to go to a certain hotel room at a certain time (Would YOU take such an invitation from a stranger? Sounds like a recipe for an asshole-widening you didn't ask for) to give him a super-secret viewing?

I'm not making any claims one way or the other...I've never read this guy's reviews before (or if I did, didn't really notice the author), and I'll go see the movie when it comes out. But be careful with Occam's Razor...it's really all in *how* you state the options. Just about anything can be phrased such that it sounds simplistic, and just about anything can be broken down into its basic elements (plus the occasional dash of paranoia) and sound horrendously complex.

Pascal's Gambit sucks even in the simplest christian god vs no god scenario. Every interpretation of christian doctrine I am familiar with is heavily faith-based. There are several points in the Bible, old and new testament, that discuss the difference between true faith and empty ritual-following.

So, yeah, Pascal's Gambit is pretty worthless, even if only applied to a very simplistic case. I actually had a friend in high school who used it as justification for his strict adherence to Mormon (parent influence) ideals. I've always found this funny, seeing as how "let him ask in faith, nothing wavering" (James 1:6) is one of the key passages that lead to the founding of the LDS church.

Hell, most of these companies will gladly provide you with information on how to remove yourself.

Spam is an offer for a penis-enlargement pill from a randomly-generated Yahoo account. Spam is (as best I can tell) a Japanese porn site sample. Spam is a make-money-fast offer. Spam pulls tricks to hide the sender. Spam will send the same message to the same nonexistant address 50 times.

Most other authentication methods would involve stuff that couldn't be handled automatically (say, a fax of your driver's license and a voided check or credit card statement)...they'd have to have significantly more staff to sort through all that crap, not to mention additional customer service staff to deal with problems and such with that.

Since they are not shipping you the products you purchase from Ebay, they have no way of doing even that most basic verification...checking that billing address and shipping address are the proper ones listed on the credit account.

Credit card fraud is pretty damned rampant on the internet anyway, and there's tons of fraud (CC and otherwise) on Ebay. Combine all that into one big lump that PayPal has to deal with, and they have to take measures like that to protect themselves. Most major credit card issuing banks have really stepped up the penalties for sites that do not have sufficient anti-fraud measures in place.

The only people I ever see with the DivX codecs installed use it for pirated movies or porn. You can afford to lose a few bits in a digital video stream...a couple pixels will be wrong or there will be an barely-detectable pop in the audio...basically, nothing that will significantly impact the viewing experience. Now, losing a few bits out of the middle of a document? Or a database file? That's a lot harder to recover from.

Of course, I could be totally wrong on this...it's mostly dependent on the quality of the tape involved...but judging the average quality of videotape out there, I'd say I wouldn't trust it for backups.
