    I think that in this case he was using "Greedy" as an adjective on "Capitalist", rather than as one term: "Greedy Capitalist".

    BTW: You're right, success does not an evil greedy capitalist make. In capitalisim, Competition is sacrosanct. He's an evil, greedy capitalist for manipulating the market to quash competition.

    I'm really surprised there was no legal recourse for the company involved since it was, at least in some sense, abuse of their property (the domain name) and probably their trademark.

    In this case, however, is wan't like you would REASONABLLY expect Ford to own the associated domain. 2600 bought it, it was theirs to do with as they pleased. IMHO, of course.

    The most recent add for the Twin Towers (At the end of FotR) has the soundtrack from FotR.


    OK, normally I wouldn't nitpick to this level, but the movie is "The Two Towers". The only reason I'm nitpicking is that there are groups who want to change the name of the movie because they feel it is a reference to 9-11, even though the book of the same name was written > 50 yrs ago.

    You know, now that you mention it, I bet you could fight quite a long time on 40Bln. Just think: No command structure already in place, no hundreds of years of tradition to maintain, no obsession with maintaining high-powered weapons you can't maintain but that none-the-less require a huge amount of upkeep and security.

    Look at it this way:
    1 trained merc for a few weeks: 10K
    1 laser guided anti-tank missile: 1K
    Any tank on the battlefield today: Between 50M (very old) and 1Bln (M1A1)

    Taking out said tank with said missile: Priceless.

    Besides, without the political concerns of a government I bet they could be quite effective if ruthless.

    But it's not true in all cases. They can't kick you out because of your skin or religion, can they? Sure, it's a private business, but try to keep all people of a certan descent out of your store and see how long you last before you're in front of a nice judge.

    I think the legal lines begin to blur around where a private enterprise can start deny individuals service.

    Wow... This brings back the memories.

    At my first real employer in technology, we were nice and up to date... 4mm DAT for all our backups.

    Except... we interfaced with some companies in the healthcare industry. All of their data came in on 9-Track.

    Everyone else had a great deal of difficulty making the tape drive read some of the various formats and work out the bpi and character formats on our flukey old 9-track drive... except me. I was the 9-Track Wizard. Give me the tape and I could get the data off. Reel bent in the mail? No problem. Cut tapes? Bring it on...

    I even got the responsibility for blanking out the tapes. I had to write a nice little program to write prime numbers to the tapes in order to have some nice random data.

    Ah, those were the days, years ago. All gone now.

    I'll miss you, little 9-track.

    OK, I loved the movie. Very nice. They cut the right parts and I have no major bitches about the changes... save one:

    Was anyone else pissed off when Gandalf was made to look like a bit of a tottering old fool? In general, for the first 20-30 minutes, but specifically hitting his head on the DOOR? I mean JINKIES! He's a bloody WIZARD, one of the most powerful beings in middle earth. I don't recall him hitting his head on a bloody DOOR in the book!

    OK, end rant. Good movie. Go see it if you haven't.

    What? You don't think we should follow Teller's idea and use H-Bombs (about 6 in the 20MT range, IIRC) to give Alaska a really kickass bay?

    Also IIRC, isn't there still some controversy as to if it was really Teller's design for the Super? There was a fair ammount of evidence that the design was really Ulam's and Teller stole it, wasn't there?

    Of course, IMHO, Teller is simply a nutbar, but that's just me. Atomics for civil engineering my arse!

    Why not a completely dummied up program? It's happened to me. None of the real code was demoed.

    Worst Part? They then made me turn the "Demo Code" into the real product. Ouchie. So much for "design" or "testing".

    When you do a test like this, you don't do it just to get the binary answer of "did it hit?" You want complete telemetry on both missiles to find out exactly what happened, what went right, what went wrong. That the seeker missile would get to take advantage of the telemetry would be ridiculous and a grand scandal.

    But YOU know and I know that there were BILLIONS of dollars on the line and the only thing getting reported in the national media was "success" or "failure".

    There are dozens of parts to a system like this. Quick: which ones were tested?

    We don't know. We don't care. USA Today says "It's GOOD!" and we believe them.

    I wouldn't put it past anyone to falsify these tests.

    I don't know WHERE he gets that idea. As long as ANY machines still have the work and ANY machines remaine unhardened, we'll still have this problem.
