    Thus proving, the many ruin things for the few.

    Tell that to someone who does tech support (like me :)).

    Yeah you may not call AMD or Nvidia's oem's about a faulty (over-clocked) chip - but systems are sold all the time with tweaked parts in them to buyers who really don't know any better.

    Anyhow I have a 2600 Barton and it definately doesn't run stable at 3200 (ie 200x11) :(.

    The errors start happening LONG before hardware burns up, and is soon as the card is set to a slightly lower speed, the errors disappear.

    Not that I'm going to do this to my plain jane 5900 (I love it the way it is) - but most 5900's do have thermal protection. On my card it says it shuts down at 140 deg C (which its never come close to hitting) - currently its at 55 deg C and runs about 65 deg C playing games.

    Thats where I'm at - I currently work at an outsourcing call center for wages that are laughable. With student loan payments I actually don't make any money working at this place.

    Most of my mp3's are not itunes files (actually I lied - none of them are) - a lot of them I made myself.

    Plus this device just acts like a usb hdd when connected to your mac/pc - if you could figure out how to get your itunes files into mp3 format you're set.

    The largest flaw of the article involves the availability of games for Mac OS X. The writer admittedly didn't know of many, so I'll list a few, past, present, and near future. Games that cannot play with their PC or Linux counterparts in a multiplayer mode will be marked with the number sign (#)

    And the best thing about them is you know already know which ones are good because you played them 3 or 4 years ago on the pc!

    (and yes I have a mirror front mac...)

    I think one reason is that they tend to have a minor problem when they do fail (which is not at all uncommon) and that is they act like an insulator.

    If your PC didn't have some sort of active warning system (my Barton 2600 does) or you switched them all off you could damage the cpu and or board.

    I work in tech support, this is a common call:

    User calls up with a really strange error that I've never heard before. Almost always stressed out middle aged men and women who use this machine for a slim set of verticle market apps.

    Almost always turns out they are running 98/ME which came with the original machine and they have about 1200 fonts, 10 million apps in the sys-tray. And they have no clue how to do anything with the system. Never mind troubleshoot a complex problem on an OS that is 6 years old (95/98/ME are some of the few os's where ffr really is the only option sometimes).

    I thought - if I got calls like this all the time - I wonder what Microsoft gets? I'll bet they took one look at what Windows 98 support costs them and just checked out of that situation.

    This is kind of like the difference between stealing and actual good and making a copy of an actualy good (a movie) - same logic could be applied to software.

    In one case an object is physically missing (shoplifting) - the other a crappy recording was made.

    This isn't too uncommon actually - I work in tech support for a well known graphics program. Many of the tech support people and customers sometimes really hate it. I get in that mindset too. What I have to remind myself of is that it works fine for me at home and my work computer.

    There's something about this - I can throw all kinds of disks at my Apex player that my friends sony refuses to play (pal, multi-region, some +/- R disks etc).

    I still use my AD-660A (which I paid about a hundred bucks for - a deal at the time 3 year ago) - rarely it locks up when coming out of standby (I just switch it on and off) other than that it works like a top.

    Problem is when I drive to work in the big city I live in the same traffic problems happen every day - eventually I'm driving 5-10 miles per hour. Frankly there's very little that can happen thats life threatening at that speed.

    One of the problems I have had forming a union at a domestic outsourcing call center is that the people who have jobs now are way too worried about losing them.

    Which is ironic - the staffing models they use at these places totally gives workers the upper hand. I mean if we all walked out one afternoon they would seriously lose face with out clients.

    Actually you might be suprised - there's several books to read on this subject. One of them is "Samurai's from Outer Space", and the other is a neat book called "What's Japanese about Japanese Animation".

    I'd almost believe that Mitnick wrote the first book himself - at least the draft. The first book covers the same ground repeatedly, and his summarizations in the ends of each chapter certianly sound like him.

    One thing about buying pre-paid phones in japan is they do make you register your name/address. Its odd - I suspect its something to do with tracking people who use these phones for criminal purposes.

    I used to date the CD's I made - I had a yamaha cd recorder I gave to my brother a while back. Most of the earlier cd's I made are dated 96-97. And this drive actually supported CDRW disks too.

    I read comcast's AUP - it says nothing about how much bandwidth you're allowed to use each month, but they shut people off for using their unlimited bandwidth anyhow.

    They do say "You must comply with all current bandwidth, data storage, and other limitations on the Service established by Comcast and its suppliers" http://www.comcast.net/terms/use.jsp - keyword being "established by" - however you can search high and low to find what the limitations are. You can ask their customer service people before you sign up. But no-one will tell you.

    What gets me is they kind of encourage it - they have a pay for music service (similar to itunes) and they have a broadband content gateway.

    Low band vhf can sometimes act like HF - look up sporadic e propagation. The current distance record last I heard was a contact between someone in Washington and an operator in South Africa on 6 meters (that starts at 50 MHz).

    I'll fully admit its not a sustainable propagation mode anyone would want to rely on to any degree, but it happens often enough there are people out there who try to predict and operate sporadic e as its highly efficent.

    You'll notice every one of these deaths was because they bypassed safety equipment - not because some ride had a failed system or anything. One was because a guy tried to sneak into the park via the monorail track apparently forgetting that the train regularly traveled its tracks.

    Thing is - most tech support agents for US based outsourcing companies (which is how dell used to do things before moving to india) make about 9$/hr - if you knew what you were doing a) would you give a crap about the customer for those kinds of wages and b) would you be working somewhere else that paid more?

    And before you think - oh server people must know more right? Not really - often times these people are working for the same exact wages in the same outsourced call center despite what products they support.
