It's only available for beta testing and in most of the software world, that's considered internal.
Alpha testing is normally internal only, Beta testing is when you involve third party testers
(normally people/companies who want to buy your product).
Look at pictures of naval submarines. Notice how the high strength steel tends to push inward on the substructure over time?
I think you'll find that the dents come from hitting fishing boats (and the odd depth charge).
The elasticity is used
to take up some of the strain. Acrylic lacks this feature and is more likely to develop cracks leading to either regular replacement or catastrophic
failure.
The replacement schedule for Acrylic viewports is (normally) ten years. I could imagine that the ten year refit for a submarine like this would be around 7 million usd.
apple seems to do quite well at selling an OS. even if they also make money on hardware and some
crappy little mp3 player
Oh right, a MacOS runs great on x86 hardware, doesn't it?
The only reason Apple didn't go the same way is because they brought there own hardware, so how can MS stop resellers installing MacOS on Macs
the same way they did to BEOs???

...any movie I would want to see less, given the trailer. On the upside, I am guessing that if I did go see the movie, I wouldn't be
disappointed; at least I KNOW it sucks, where these days often the trailer deceives me so......
Most of the time the trailers are more enjoyable that the main features... Sometimes I just leave after watching the trailers and don't bother with the main title.
Fat Fucking Chance. If we called the Saudi's this afternoon and said "Hey, King Fahd. Know all of that oil you've got?
Well, keep it. We got hydrogen power." You think that would stop the terrorists? No way. This would only force them to
find a different premise under which to attack the US.
I love it! Keep the terrist out of our homes, use more oil!!! Of course once it runs out and we have to send troops in to find (or defend) more oil interests, that will be ok, terrist don't mind that sort of thing.
Yeah, while your pushing this train of thought, please tell Bush the if use th oil in Alaska then the terrist might come back because we are not using so much oil from the middle east.
Please... PLEASE, do not consider Carmack's code as "good".
I'm not bashing Mr Carmack here, but I've gotta say I agree with you. Also this isn't a great suprize, but mainly the nature of commercial gamming code. If you compare the quakeII source code to the original Elite source code you'll see
that in general you shouldn't expect "good" code when you look into a game.
I've just built quake2 from sources and it did take a lot of tweeking. If I had a job at ID I have to admit that one of the first things I would
do to the quake II code base would be to start using automake and autoconf so we don't have to "tweak" things to get them working.
But now that it's open source I can add automake and autoconf any.
Happy Xmas and have fun writting a quake2 based games....;-)
an open source terrorist face recognition project.
an open source smart bomb...
...here we have the base requirements for a cruise missle. Or maybe an underwater enviro-terrorest robot that can locate and cripple the screws (props) on whale killing boats (or any other boat in the area just incase it might hurt the whales).
Plus it would look stupid if your clones had only one hump instead of two, and you might end with scary hybrids with *three* humps. ARGH!
I don't know what you are talking about, the more humps the better, I'd like a camel with eight humps. It would be like the minivan of camels (but without all the cup holders) and me and my friends can all go to the beach with our surfboards on the back of the camel.
A letter explaining what they expect from their user community.
If it's open source then you can only "expect" your users to follow the license. Of course the Abi guys haven't put up a list of demands for there community, they have put up some guild lines for there project. Wouldn't have made a slashdot items out of it, but I like to see Abi getting lots of press.
I bet if they don't change the stock ticker every time Red Hat's stock goes up so will VA (this, of course could be an insider traders dream).
Of course I'm sure it'll go down when RHAT does as well. Also, I think Red Hat has too much marketing invisted in the "Red Hat" brand to change the stock ticker.
Oh well, nice try as a linux company VA, I really thought you'd make it (or atleast stay in the game).
Great work and all that, we really appreciate what you've done. Now, I'd really like to know which boot you put on first thing in the morning, is the right foot or the left foot? Have you ever put your boots on the wrong feet before?
Thanks!.
P.S.: What do you think of RedBoot (It's for embedded devices)?
They did that with the Final Fantasy film, and it sucked! It might have looked good enough but the characters
barely showed emotion or reacted with their environment- making the film incredibly tedious to watch
I have to say that the FF film was the best I've seen so far (WRT to %100 CG). Although I agree with you.
I'm kind of worried that they are going to screw it up. I mean, There is a lot more to a bruce lee movie that somebody that looks like bruce lee. Take "Game of Death" for example, that was made from bruce lee out takes, unused footage and look a likes, it really sucked. You can see straight a way that he doesn't move like Bruce Lee, B.L. has a very defined way of moving and I really don't see people getting that on computer.
Basically, I think they have bitten off more than they can chew and will not make CG movies take off or look good. They should stick to trying to make FF type movies better before the insult really cool death people in corny ways....
RAM that maintains memory after shutdown sound interesting?
Sound interesting? Hmmmm, no, actually it sounds just like the static memory in my BBC model B (cerc. 1982), ok so I only had 32K of SRAM (and 32K of DRAM), but same idea (kind of).
As for booting I also remember the BBC B could boot really fast. Using a trick that most slashdotter might find really interesting and have never heard of before, it's called putting the operation system on a rom. Neat yeah?

ARM's AMULET?? The AMULET is an asynchronous implementation of the ARM architecture, but it was
developed by the University of Manchester.
The UofM is part of a group called "OMI/DE" (Open Microprocessor systems Initiative - Deeply Embedded). This group is headed up by ARM (oh gee is that why it's based on an ARM processor...).
You can read more about OMI/DE here:

Well, just when you think you've seen something new, then you release that ARM did five years before... Check out the AMULET, it's been around since 1990 (in design) and then became the worlds first commercial asynchronous microprocessor in 1994.
Of course I'm used to things getting published a little late on slashdot;-)
What do you think the 128 bit W.E.P. is... It is the security equivelent of the National Guard... If you want real
security you send in the Marines or Rangers (I mean 802.3x, or IPsec with AES CTR Mode)
So, do any "real security" equivelents run on the Mac and Linux? Securing a linux only wireless network seems to be a lot easier than a Mac/Linux wireless network. An open source VPN that has Mac clients would be great (and I'm not into running PPP over an ssh tunnel on my Mac).

On an average day I may write between 50 to 500 lines of quality code. (By quality, I mean not rejected by a peer review.)
On a really good day I will only write between 2 and 10 lines of code. They will achieve the same ends as the 50 to 500 line solution.
