  8. Oh yea?!?! How about this printer...? on Are Printers What They Used To Be? · · Score: 1

I have a couple REALLY old printers... Anyone remember the Gorilla Banana, and a Commodore MPS-801. Both of those printers use the spinning platen, and dual-hammer print heads. For those who aren't familiar with that design, the print head has two flat hammers that strike a spinning platen that, from the end, looks like a gear, with teeth on it. Those ridges when struck with the hammer, intersect at just the right place to form a dot on the paper. It's really quite interesting. They're loud, and slow, and the print quality is pretty poor. The letters are made up of 5x7 dots, and there are no decending characters... Letters like g, q, p, y, all sit up a bit higher than other lowercase letters... :)

I also have some Okidata Microline printers, and a couple Star NX-1000's, and a Panasonic KXP-1180. All of them are favorites for using on Commodore computers with my Xetec Supergraphix Gold interface... that thing's got some real value, actually, they're VERY hard to find.

My Epson Stylus Color 400 still works fine, even with cheap Chinese ink. I have had that printer for several years. My Epson Stylus Photo 780 works well, too, but needs to be used more often than the 400 to keep from clogging. Ohwell, good thing I'm not paying Epson for their ink anymore.

And they get driven around in limos that consume... uh... gasoline, also made from... er... maybe... oil. And the CD's and DVD's they produce, made from plastic, packaged in plastic... which ultimately comes from... ding ding, oil. Deep down inside they probably want oil prices to come down so that the RIAA and MPAA-related companies can make a higher profit on their movies, etc, because the price of media drops. Eh, or they can just raise prices again. What a tangled web we weave.

I still use floppies for booting/flashing, etc. I have a shitload of floppy images in WinImage format that I can make quickly. Even Nero makes boot CD's easily from a floppy. I can also use my 720K disks to x-fer files to my Commodore with the Big Blue Reader, or, the Little Red Reader. Though, it is kinda funny that C= was able to fit 808K on a low density floppy, and the amiga was able to fit 880K, while the PC's only fit 720K. Silly.

Oh, and in responce to the Apple person... Pleanty of PC's have been coming without floppies. HP and Compaq's laptops usually don't include them, and several small manufacturers have been leaving out floppy drives in their barebone or low-end systems. It's not a matter of being behind the times, it's a matter of cost savings... that's the only reason Dell wants to do it, so they can save a few bucks per computer they sell. I have enough 3.5" drives that I'll still continue to use them in my own systems. It's convienant as hell to be able to use WinImage to make a simple boot disk, throw some bios/firmware update files on it, and boot. Can't do a "safe mode command prompt only" in Win Me/2K/XP, need a floppy. And it's a LOT easier than creating a bootable CD-R, or RW.

All the manuals that come with motherboards are very short on explanations, and I would like to see someone within the company actually explain to us hardware enthusiasts the down 'n dirty, nitty gritty, dirt under the rug, needle in a haystack type of information that we could use to make our computers run the absolute best they can.
