The fallacy of your statement is that most of us grew up with game stores where nearly every game was made and marketed for kids. You haven't understood or followed the change in the industry because it was happening while you grew up.

When you were a kid you could play nearly every game in the store. Imagine an eight year old now and nearly a third of the games they see, they can't play because they are not age appropriate.

I don't think the market is zero sum like you seem to think. Sure, Nintendo would like to have a larger market and make more money but I don't think that the Xbox is taking that market from Nintendo.

Xbox is maybe taking market from Sony or it's growing the over all market with their games and approach.

I don't see Halo2 affecting the sales of Zelda, Mario, or any E games for instance.

There is far more consoles that do not have online than there are that do. It makes perfect sense to sell more games to more users to make more money. If the game was any good they would come out with a robust single player to sell to the majority of console users. This shows their lack of confidence in the game over all and in the single player mode.

The single player mode is not good enough to sell the game to enough Gamecube owners to make it profitable for that platform. That says much about the game for any console owner.

The FCC is a government organization the ESRB is a voluntary organization.

As long as the ESRB precludes government regulation of the gaming industry it has done it's job and continues to be useful. If it allows through inaction or incompetence, increased government control and regulation _then_ it will out live it's usefulness. At which time the FCC will take over and continue to regulate the failures of private industry.
