  1. Re:Huh? on MySpace Down Due To Power Surge · · Score: 1

What do you think is going on. Myspace is a huge network channel it's being out affects a significant population of consumers/people that generate revenue. It doesn't matter what you think of the site specifically. Do you think that if NBC or CBS shut down for a whole day because of a single power outage it would be news worthy? It would be.

I think this points to a huge weakness in the network infrastructure. When entire channels disappear for a day because of bad hardware it makes for a news worthy story.

Xbox games, PC games, and Gamecube games don't work on a Playstation. They all operate in closed systems. It is clear when you purchase a game that it is for the Playstation, not your PC or the Xbox. The iPod is not a closed system.

The iPod plays music from a variety of sources. If it could only play music that was purchased for the iPod then it would be clear to the consumer that they are purchasing iPod music. It's not clear to most people that they are purchasing iPod music. They are purchasing songs. Songs obviously play on a variety of hardware. I think there is a reasonable expectation that music files are device independant.

If the iPod was restricted to only playing music that was downloaded from iTunes I think they would stand a better chance in the court of world opinion. But since they are playing the whole field they need to play by a whole set of rules.

I don't think this as anything to do with Nintendo being sure of itself. It's just market economics. I also think it makes for happy consumers.

At first you have to work with the parts that are availible and have been produced. The screens are only so good at the price range your looking for. You can design a $800 dollar handheld but you can't sell it, so you go with what the market will accept.

Then you sell a million of the units and the producer of the screens uses that capital to improve their production and the design of the screens. The price comes down on current production. You can afford to put better screens in while keeping the same price range or you can keep the same screens and increase your margins.

I think it's to their credit that they don't keep producing units with the lesser quality screens. The just swap in their $800 dollar design when the manufacturing costs come down enough to fit their price range.

Right now, today, I expect there is a smaller thinner version on some engineers desk that costs $800 to produce.

Unless you want to live in an internet ghetto people need to speak for and require a basic level of security over their information. People should expect it and they should get it. Industries that can't provide that should be barred from performing. I have a right to an expectation of privacy and my rights trump their business risk.
