they are all over. 5 year old chess is huge. most schools have one, or a neighbor school will adopt kids from other schools.
most chess software quite honestly sucks, especially getting it setup to challenge a 5 year old without discouraging them by getting slaughtered over and over.
IBM was in the driver's seat, but didn't get a contract that gave them exclusive access to DOS was the real undoing. The split betwen MS-DOS and PC-DOS gave Microsoft the chance to ween itself from IBM, and cozy up with other companies (the clone makers) and eventually stab IBM in the back.

Now my understanding is that Sony refused to license BETA for 3rd parties, but didn't care about the lesser quality VHS.
cheap clones were created using VHS, billions of them. all 50-80% cheaper than beta. video stores responded with more and more VHS over beta.
