    Wow, this could give Microsoft a usable operating system.

    Except they have no experience selling stuff that works. this could be very disorienting indeed.

    And what about the customers, what are they going to think when they stop getting all those cool viruses,? Of course, I would expect MS to add the official MS viral operating environment right on top of Linux, since that's what the users need. because at MS, they are all about those users, and what they need and shit.

    ok, first off. congrats to the great people working on WINE.

    that being said. why would I go through all the trouble of dumping windows and switching to linux/bsd only to then attempt to run my windows programs?

    OS/2 emulated windows, didn't do shit for it's long term viability. Linux/BSD does not needs windows apps. they need native apps. as IBM learned why would company X port their app to Linux when it's runs (with varied success) in wine?

    not trying to troll, just really really don't "get" the efforts to make windows shit run without windows. don't bother with the long-winded intelligent rebuttal to this, because obviously you are wrong.

    with os, no os, any os. fuck, we have that now. am I unable to use google with my mac box? no. how about my bsd box. no. how about my solaris box. no. google works there too. simply fucking amazing my browser loads google from anywhere.

    gee maybe MS needs to get one of those "works anywhere" web sites too.

    I don't buy this, a browser on a machine with no OS. so Gates needs to be afraid of a technology that for one doesn't exist, isnt' on the immediate horizon and simpy isn't happening.

    ok, someone else have a better explanation that a future of machines running a google browser with no OS?

    maybe I am just slow, but I don't really understand WHY Microsoft would even give a shit about google.

    Google has no OS, no Office Suite, no database, they are a website. what's the fucking competition? MS already lost the cool website wars about 8 years ago.

    is this really over a searching? And why would Bill Gates give a damn about google as long as the people using google are doing it on windows? Is google leading the migration from windows? if so, I missed that headline. Are they working on google OS? Google Office? GoogSQL?

    Can someone explain again why it is that google "threatens" microsoft? only use english, not "industry-speak" (aka nonsense)

    The issue is really quite simple. IBM was supposed to use SCO's code to develop Monterey, and instead, they apparently used it to enhance Linux. Everything else being said about this case is just rehashing of religious fervor and procedural issues.


    Wow, Deja vu. IBM paid MS to code OS/2, and they instead worked on NT. maybe IBM just figured if it worked once...

    a couple of those incidents should scare off the smartest people, as well as leave some angst amonst those thinking about giving them a time-critical project.

    agreed, MS out-laywered Sybase bigtime. Sybase gave away the farm on that one. But this was when people trusted MS, MS was still stringing IBM and Lotus along with their vaporous os/2 work.

    if this is another stac, then I expect they will just make the required payment and move on.

    This certainly could be the case.

    I know they were so unimpressed with Stac's disk compression technology, that they quickly wrote their own from scratch in a clean room. wait, maybe that was Sybase SQL Server. No, that's not it.

    maybe the risk losing a suit in the end is cheaper than either paying legit royalties or investing the R&D to roll your own. I think maybe MS has so much money, they are willing to take these sorts of risks, it's only money...that stuff falls from the sky for them.

    Personally, I wish SP2 *would* be a forced upgrade for everybody. It's not like people haven't had time to prepare; it's been over 6 months right? Anybody who is not yet ready

    this is simply not reasonable for corporations with investments in 3rd party and in-house built software. you can't just upgrade because the vendor forces it. fixpacks for the OS must go through rigorous testing with all software combinations before deployment. upgrade costs can be phenomenal for this sort of task (or perhaps better referred to as a tax).
