This would also go into the area of standards. And you can only standardize Linux so much. Sure Linux, like religion, would like to expands it's "user" base, but there are some users and areas that just don't belong. We all know the saying to give utmost easy of use you have to give up security.

So there is still a way to go. They have a work in progress but are not fully up.
I mean once they offer stock, they are going to have a board right? If that's the case lets hope they don't fall in line with Apple when Steve got fired by the board!
Just a though, they, the owners now, will lose alot of control over google, beside the comitition can buy some and if they get around 10%...oh well let us just wait and see.
Maybe this would work fine in the old' 8BIT days. But with these computers it is very hard. Technology moves so fast-if you wait for the software to be bug-free then you will miss the window.
Plus at least a Linux distro out of the box is more secure (depending on distro) and stable than MS. That is just from my experience.
More significantly, Outlook can automatically block images embedded in e-mails, a common tactic used by spammers.
Is this not automatic? Any how when will MS put this stuff in IE too? I mean I love how Mozilla lets me diable Javascripting, why doesn't MS catch on to this.
And E-mail SPAM filtering? I just opened an MSN account to use the MSN messenger and I got five SPAM immediatly, why don't they try to stop it further away from the machine? Because even you filter it Outlook will down load the message first to look at it.
in an effort to generate more takers of their Linux licensing plan.
Basically they don't want to look too aggressive in order to have a chance. They have read all the reviewers remarks and realized that they are too pushy so they want to be the nice guys helping everyone else follow the law.
Sorry but you can't fault that quote. Most Win Pro magz call it Linux in general and more than half of the windows users are lucky if they can pronounce Linux correctly. People who have hard time installing the OS will most likely not know WTF a kernel is.
He recognizes the fatal user flaw of not applying patches and introduced an educational plan to help correct this.
This is also know as posetive reinforcement by virtue of a bat. Come on, I can just see it now. "No click updating" Don't worry about it WE_WILL_take care of it for you just accept this l-o-n-g ULA that you don't want to read and click accept."
Let's do what we can to get this mess straightened out once and for all for the good of the economy and innovation. Let's not rejoice in this unfair punishment.
You are correct. Do not forget that this is a wakeup call for MS now to patent everything possible to make sure this does not happen to them again.
you could re-encode the stripe with new information...like you're really over 21
Then they should do what Ohio does. The license is pictured different for age. The typical long ways for people 21 and over, and the 21 and young, their license is turn 90 deg. Meaning the shorter lines are top and bottom. This also saves the time for hunting for an age. Granted this can and will be counterfeited, but at least it put a damper in it. Plus almost every ID can be counterfeited.
Hey I bought Civ III and thought it would be great to have more automation in the workers, and more tribes...but behold a little later the expansion pack has all the items the original seemed to lack. This is a new tactic by software developers to squeeze more money out of us. Look at Neverwinter Nights, with two new expansions, but what is in them? A new module, which can be done for free, and a collection of_fan_made tiles and hacks. I like the above mentioned games, but I'm getting teed about the expansion syndrome.
This sounds like nothing but a 14 step program. 14 ways to look at a glum problem. Well you can look at it this way there are always jobs out there-it just depends on how much pride you have.
Well I have also used many other distro's-except Debian. I love Slack because I believe it is more standard. In that I mean that I can d/l more src pgms and compile them with out dep's, or worse distro spec deps. Yet it just "feels" better to use. I feel as if I have more freedome to do what ever the hell I want to with it. To add a cliche, once you go slack you never go back.
Is it me or does it seem as we have fully entered the "Lawyer Age?" I mean we all know about the bronze age and such but it seems as we are living in a time when lawyers decide whats best for everyone-well the ones backed by big money anyway.
While 100% use of Linux is better than 100% use of Windows, 100% use of anything is still bad.
Are you in government. It sounds as if you want to show you care but disguise your lack of action by a trump up catchy phrase.
Then a follow up with:
So lobby for Open Source instead. Lobby for Open Standards. Those will also be much easier to get acceptance.
Come on here lobbying from Open Standards- how broad of a subject can we pull. With the vagueness of politicians already grown to an uncontrollable blunder; they will have a field day just pouncing around this idea to show their concern for the people. We should start the fight somewhere tangible, and since the common world has at least heard of Linux and its bleeding heart open source lines-it only seems as the best start. Especially since governments are moving their whole systems to Linux. Can you imagine what would happen to all of these governments after the software patents and other limiting bills are passed? Talk about throwing away the money.
It's their choice over all. If you don't like it-don't use it. They need to make money some how and this is what they came up with. And if I'm not wrong it is their right to do so. With all of this I stopped using MDK and don't plan on going back so I could care less. I can understand the hard-core MDK users being a bit pissed but everyone else?
This is what global corporations will require. And it is these customers who will determine the ultimate fate of Open Source - not SCO, not IBM, and not Open Source leaders.
Through out this whole article this klutz talks as if he is the guiding light for the Open source community. Screw it he is attacking Linux and that's it cuz there are Windows programs that are open source. Why does he think that corporations will decide what the open source needs? Has not many of Country Governments adopted Linux and use it for their needs? And with this would not many businesses also see the diversity of Linux applications? Any how I really hate how this person is trying to play the victim. As many people have noticed that this has been going on for a while; it's not like the code just appeared one day, well what ever code they are claiming. I honestly believe that this aggressive action is being directed/assisted by a higher power, and I don't mean religiously either.
"We'd like to see the market decide who the winners are in the software industry,"
A typical American Business failure; to realize not every country wants a Republic governments backed by a capitalistic economic system. I think MS is just pissed because they haven't found a way to buy off the governments in Asia yet.
That is it my friends, capitalism at it's best. Education should be a priority-especially in these times as it seems America is out-sourcing everything, but then again, capitalism is about making money-not helping the society. Any how I hope more exchanges as these show up, why should the publishers that change a few pictures and spelling errors make money? (I know I might have a few but you're not paying me to fix them!)
OK what about google linux though?
With all the comments and sugestions on /. Linux, RMS, et al don't need lawyers, they can read the comments and get all the coaching and legal advise they ever needed-for free!
We need easier setup and a useable interface.

I'll wait until they have a good affordable dual proc mobo before I buy one.
(I'm not rich; I don't buy every stinking new piece of equipment that comes out every month. I just do a one time buy every 2-3 years.)

no software SHOULD be released until it's ready

Anyone else find their IM clients non-responsive?
I don't use the MSN network; I use AIM so I have no problems.

The system offers the hope of making cellular technology more affordable for small, rural communities
Well I hope that's not the only reason. How about just having coverage all over America for starters? And cut out the damn roaming charges.
you could re-encode the stripe with new information...like you're really over 21

Why not I think she is stroking something else ;-)
Oh admit it's funny, you'd laugh if I said " I think_HE_is stroking it!"
