It was important. When processor speeds were doubling in a matter of months, and several desktop apps could slow down a box. Opening up a box and dropping in more ram or a compatible new cpu was cheaper than getting a new box. Such advances made old laptops virtually unusable.

It's no longer true today. I use a 800 MHz PC in an office setting with no problems.

Kind of prove my point there, how long ago was it that 800 mhz was top or even just medium spec. So why have people suddenly decided now that laptops are sufficient ?. It's because of the other factors that have been mentioned (laptops catching up with desktops basically).

This is such an ignorant generalization. Firstly if you are a gamer then you still need to upgrade every 6 months to keep up with the jones's (I get away with upgrading evey two years tho).

Secondly, if this a thinly veiled attack at M$ bloat then it doesn't make sense, when was windows xp released ?, when will the next windows be released ?, and why are ppl are only now realising they do or don't need to upgrade ?.

Basically I don't think that easy upgrade was ever an important for consumers. Generally people have bought computers when they need them, just like any other appliance. There are many reasons why laptops are selling well, other posters have commented that laptops are reaching a kind of maturity that theu previously didn't have (large hard drives, decent screens, capable 3D graphics chips).

This seems to be the most controversial argument when people talking about linux taking over the desktop.

I predict that linux will come become a mainstream OS in the same way that windiows did. People will use it at work first (corporations will implement it beacuse it is cheaper and has the advantages of being open source), then it will trickle on to people's desktops at home. To think that it will happen any other way seems a bit naive considering how much M$ can afford to spend on making sure home desktops stay windows. In fact I think that we may see both OS's co existing, could be worng tho.

I think that considering that the XBox has been quite successful in the west (in terms of market penetration, obviously not financially yet), the next iteration of the XBox will almost certainly be better recieved in Japan than the current XBox is.

The whole argument that "M$ loses money on hardware while Sony and the big N are making money" is niave and ignorant. M$ almost certianly has a financial strategy that is planned out for the next 10 to 15 years. I will not be surprised if it works for them either.

SCO's lawsuit asserts that IBM has breached contractual obligations between the two companies, and also that IBM has incorporated trade secret information concerning the design of the UNIX operating system into what SCO calls generally ``Linux.'' This latter claim has recently been expanded in extra-judicial statements by SCO employees and officers to include suggestions that ``Linux'' includes material copied from UNIX in violation of SCO's copyrights. An allegation to this effect was contained in letters apparently sent by SCO to 1500 of the world's largest companies warning against use of free software on grounds of possible infringement liability.

First off I must admit that I do have a hard time following the whole affair.

Why are they warning companies away from free software ?. Surely the companies in violation are potential customers of SCO's ?. At best this is SCO trying to force a buyout by putting pressure on IBM's customers and other users of free software. At worst this is SCO blatantly leading a crusade against the whole notion and existance of free software and open source. Why would they be doing that ?, I guess this is the origins of all the thoeries that say that it is M$ that put SCO up to this.

My previous installation was RedHat 9.0 and although I got it to work with the modem it was a lot of hassle (I'm a linux newbie and had to mess about with lots of configuration scripts, not easy).

Now all I want is a firewall/router distro on a cd that supports my usb modem and doesn't need to touch the hard drive.

But on a desktop you could have many different applications that the user will need. Would checking every update really be an effecient use of time ?. Generally desktops aren't as mission critical as server's as well.
