I mean we're not marketing iPods to teenagers here. (nothing against iPods, just an example of cool and popular tech)
But don't most server admins know the benefits, and won't they have already done the research on what they want to buy? This seems like a bit of a silly waste of money to me. I am guessing these Sum servers are going to sell pretty well, but then again I think most people who buy them would have bought them without the cute ads.
On the other hand, I would have paid to get my own picture of the airplane buzzing Dell HQ. How funny. I am sure they will get a lot of attention, even if it doesn't sell machines.
Why should we worry? It's not like we have a hair-trigger cowboy with his finger on the button...
This is so bad. Seriously, next time N. Korea decides to toy with us diplomatically we have more to worry about than negotiations breaking down. Next time W. says someone has WMD's, we could have him launching nukes?
Why would I want to use my cell phone minutes for this, when I (and most people with cell phones) have free long distance included in their cell plans already?
I guess if Voip works international you are getting some benefit, but other than that most of us might just as well get a hands free headset for the cell phone and call it good.
How long before people realize that they can just take the old executable, and the old bitmaps (or dat files) and put them in the directory and voila! the content is back. It seems like no less of a problem to me than the original release. Either way, the owner of the game is modifying it beyond the control of the manufacturer.
Personally, I think there are a lot more harmful things in the game than some simulated cartoon sex scenes. I love the game, and have played it through several times. I just think people are over reacting to this stuff. I can walk into any store and buy a number of movies that show more skin than GTA, and I don't see parents and the ratings board clamoring about it. Why drop GTA from the shelves and not all movies that have sexual content as well?
If there is one thing I have noticed as of late, it is the fact that the Slashdot audience as a whole, especially those in charge of posting stories, have had a sudden swing in viewpoint about Google. Now all of the stories about Google have negative undertones, and there's always a hint of disdain in the way the story is worded.
The gradual making of a new evil entity, and new Slashdot scape goat is nearly complete! We're all being set up to hate Google now. Gotta love it, Google has not charged me for a single thing. They provide me with excellent free email, outstanding search, a nifty map site, and even a suitable chat client now. And how much have I paid them? Nothing. I for one still love Google, say what you want about them buying the world.
Ok, enough of the Apple wins Rio loses comments. Anyone know if the Rio brand will still have support from anyone? Meaning if someone's Karma dies now...is there anyplace to send it?
I was wavering between an iPod and a Karma not too long ago. The thing that made me choose Apple was the simple fact that about 60% of reviews of the Karma (on Amazon and other online review sites) were negative. People seemed to love the Karma for about 91 days...and the warranty runs out at 90 days. I read many reviews that said the hard drive died after about 100 days.
I think that is the reason Rio is going under...it has nothing to do with Apple directly. It is the fact that it seems Rio was putting out shoddy products.
Like it hadn't occurred to hundreds of people by that point that a graphical interface was a good idea? I mean don't think for a second that the first time someone pulled off a GUI, there weren't a hundred other companies immediately having meetings on how to take advantage of the idea. I'm guessing Apple was the quickest to implement.
The UV rays are not going to transfer through the fiber...think about it. And if somehow (in an alternate reality) the UV did travel through, you would just need a giant set of blue blockers to hold in front of the fiber lights. A blue blocker lamp shade perhaps?
Seriously though, this is great if you're in a sunny climate. Here in Michigan it would be of limited use 6 months out of the year, but still it'd be awesome.
Wow, isn't this what we all need? I mean with no ethernet, you get no webserver, so web browser, no FTP...this would be a disfunctional computer if you ask me. Everything I use a computer for these days requires a speedy connection to the web.
Once that is working though, this will be a pretty sweet install from the sounds.
Yes, but Lindows was created (the idea and name) in order to woo current Windows owners into switching to an OS that sounds similar and is hyped as being easy to use etc...
Lindows was something created after Windows, and was meant to use the name to draw customers. There is a clear diference here. Vista is an existing company with (as I understand) an entirely different product in a non-competing market.
(oh, and I have nothing against Lindows at all, it is just not a valid argument IMHO)
Sue for the name, or be sued I guess. Sounds like they have a case for the trademark being theirs as a name, but these cases always seem silly to me. Clearly "Windows Vista" is not the same as "Vista" the software company. It's doubtful anyone is going to confuse them.
On the other hand, you damn well bet if I happened to own a company by the name of the up-and-coming Windows OS, I would be making sure my name was EVERYWHERE right about the time the new OS came out. Hell, I'd even offer to sell them the name for $500 million or something, make it worth my time.
Yes, and the gold box thing was one of the best reasons not to log in until checkout. It must work on some people, but on me they are wasting their time.
This just makes me feel like I am one step closer to the personalized advertising (think minority report?) where every site I visit is bombarding me personally (instead of anonymously) with ads for stuff I recently looked at or purchased.
If I know who I am connected to, we're only a step away from advertisers and companies knowing who is connected to them.
I don't see scams online being any worse than over the phone or anything else. I could get a call from some random person and see "out of area" on my caller id, and they could try to sell me some product, eventually acquiring my credit card number, or some other personal information. It's no less anonymous than online really, IMHO.
As a programmer, I have to say that my frequent visits to coding sites (ie codeproject) have often increased my productivity as I tend to find bits of code that can be used in whatever I am working on, or at least inspire me to do something similar.
Without the web, and the resources it provides for helping solve problems, I would waste much more time when I get stumped on the job.
I understand that this is a big deal, since the last time a shuttle flew it did not get to land, and no disrepoect meant for the friends and family of those imvolved...
But seriously, this kind of thing would barely be news if not for the previous flight. They end up reschduling a good deal of all shuttle flights due to weather or other circumstances. If they were this careful with every airplane flight that took off and landed in the world each day, we would never get where we need to be. It makes you wonder how many times they launched in the past with problems like these and were "lucky" nothing happened.
Honestly, this trip into space is more of a political statement (or publicity shoot if you prefer) than anything. They are just dropping off some supplies and doing a little work on testing repair methods from what I understand. This shoudn't be as big of a deal as it is, just let them fly the mission when the time is right and things look correct on the ground, then tell us about the success. That's good enough coverage.
My $60 card needs no fan...that's the point. It's a 128MB radeon of some sort, and there is no fan. And guess what, it plays every game I have ever tried just fine. Including HL2. Cheap fans??? How bout no fan, and it still runs cool (as it needs to) and I didn't waste the $450 on a top-o-the-line model either...that was my point.
I agree, the onboard sucks. But I bought a 128MB card for like $60, and it plays FarCry and GTA just fine. Never a drop in framerates, I run at least 1024x768 (I know, that's not good enough for some) and sometimes higher.
My point is, there is no game that really CAN'T be played on a cheaper card. You don't have to pay $500 to get good framerates at a devent resolution. You pay that much money only to brag to the other lan party losers that your graphics cock is bigger than theirs is.
Then get off your high horse and buy a normal, inexpensive graphics card like the rest of us you fool. Oh wait, if I wait 6 months this very same card will cost half of that?? WHAT? Are you serious, the cards go down in price when the next model comes out?
What happened to the day when a graphics card didn't take up my whole machine, and it didn't needs fans to cool itself down? Then there was no question if the 50c fan was going to kill my card.
There are a ton of programs that already let you do this. Perhaps the coolest in my eyes is a program called SharePod which runs directly from the iPod hard drive, and so requires no installation. It is for Windows only, however, which is the only limitation.
Granted, I have always paid my bill so I can't tell you for sure. But upon moving into an apartment, I have no dial tone and thus cannot call anywhere until it is hooked up. I assumed it would be the same upon disconnection. No dial tone = no call

The next thing you know, Slashdot will patent "the reporting of stories about patents no one cares to hear about on their front page".

ocean.google.com
I see it now, google maps for the ocean floor. I bet they buy this robot and start compiling their data asap. C'mon, first the moon and now this!!??
I am a web hypochondriac...based on what I have read anyway. Who cares what the doc says.

There are also about a dozen alternatives here, on iPodlounge.com

Kudos to the WinAmp guys for doing this though, I'll probably check it out to see how they did it.
Ha, I am going to enter my Jetta which will be piloted by my Robosapien that I picked up at Best Buy. It'll blow that Touareg out of the water!
