I work for the UC system as a Sys Admin, and couldn't agree w/you more. Too many students seem to plug their machines into the Resnet, and not bother about AV software, or the bandwidth wasted when they share large files over the network. I think what U of F is doing is nothing but protecting their network from the inevitable...
I use a browser called Phoenix, which enables you to diable "pop-up ads" It's a nice little feature....I believe Mozilla does this as well... I have not seen a pop-up since I've been using Phoenix.....which you can download here
peace/out!
I must say VNC is one cool little tool. I setup a scanner connected to a scsi card on a system, and located it where my users can use it, w/out bothering me:)
The scanner was on my desk for a year, and everyone who used it, always interuputed what I was doing at the time, when they needed to use it...
VNC works great because I can have this networked scanner running on a PC, w/out a monitor connected to it, thus saving me space for the two printers that sit along side the scanner.....the PC it's connected to is under the printer stand......if someone has an issue w/the scanner, I can use VNC to check it out from my workstation...
The login when booting the PC the scanner is connected to is automated as well, using TweakUI.....so all I have to do is fire up the PC every morning, it logs in automatically, and the scanner is up and running...
Let's say you need to transfer a driver....they always fit on a floppy.
Let's also say that the machine you're putting the driver does not have a internet connection.....and you have to find it on the web w/another machine...
Transfering it to a floppy is a great way to do this...
If you put money, credit cards, or anything for that matter in a wallet made by M$...you would more than likely lose it, because of holes in the wallet...
I've found it easier and more secure to remember a passphrase as oppose to a password.
can you spell m-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i?
Life's a bitch when your stupid. Even when you've got $50 billion in the bank. Life is a bitch when you can't even spell... you're NOT your...
California may be the 3rd largest as far as population is concerned, but it IS the 5th largest economy in the WORLD!

How this received a 5 for funny is beyond me... How bout a 0 for lame...
You must understand that walking over and talking to someone is more disturbing to others in earshot, than just sending an email...
Sounds like an old Styx song :)

My iron is a Black & Decker, and it has an auto shutoff feature... Maybe you should upgrade ;)
A. Be a memeber...

B. Fill out a long stupid form...
The Web is really begining to suck!!

I wonder is Richard works for Micro$shit...I mean $oft...
Or just abandoned the tour?
They must have planned, and spent quite a bit of money already...
Moby probably doesn't even know what a "techie" is...
Anyone that makes shit out of M$ should be labled "vigilant"...
Thus releasing this article may help them sell their AV software...
Anything stupid coming from Micro$hit anymore, does not surprise me...
They suck and always will...
That'swhy I moved first to WA State, and now on the Southern Coast of Cali...
One place I visited that I would never want to live is WHYoming :)
It's a small office of around 30 users...
I am the IT person for the office...and what I found out that works best is Veritas Backup Exec...
It works great...
I do :)
Oh APPLE!
There aren't too many "software" manuals for Apple are there?
:)
I think he meant software :)
I use to work for a software company in Eastern Washington State...
Their password for all of their servers was QWERTY...
How freaking dumb is that?...
Needless to say, I implemented new passwords...
Since I've left the company, I'm sure they went back to something pretty lame.....like QWERTY
