You know what apps made it easier for me to switch to linux (years ago)? AbiWord and Mozilla, because they were cross platform. Ya know what kept a windows install on that computer for years? mIRC and Eudora. Why? Because I looked at the native linux apps (xchat and the old kmail) and was thoroughly unimpressed. I spent a lot of time on mIRC and had lots of scripts that made it do exactly what I wanted to do, I didn't want to spend the time to convert those to xchat scripts. I personally still don't like the way xchat looks (xchat2 is a nice improvment, though). Similarly, my mail, addresses and filters were already set up and working great in Eudora, I didn't want to mess with importing that to KMail which I liked a lot less at the time.

I eventually did switch over, but native applications weren't much of a selling point to me. It's hard to justify switching from one application to another one that isn't compatible.

Slashcode is open source. If converting it is so easy, why hasn't it been done by now? But you've got a 3 digit userID. You should know all that.

If it were me, I'd either do it quietly with no announcments til the day I planned on releasing it, or just not do it at all, and enjoy my evenings knowing that even if I were trying, I'd still get flamed for some little mistake.

On what planet is KDE 'simular' to Windows? Oh... its probably the IOSlaves that let you transparently save files to different networks via ftp, ssh, etc. Oh, wait, no thats not it. Maybe its that you can get an mp3 or an ogg from a music track on a CD simply by putting the cd in, and typing in audiocd:/ and picking the files you want. Oh, windows doesn't have that either? Seriously. The similarity begins and ends with the fact that they both have a taskbar, a cursor, and windows.

And how is Gnome not?? And they're both easy to install, because they come with the freaking distro!

And thats pretty much the way KDE says to do it. Thats why its an option (again, one thats defaulted this way in most distros) under the Desktop settings in Control Center. I personally don't even notice the K's anymore...

But really, this practice (as has been said before by many others) certainly didn't start with KDE, or Gnome. Look at MSOfice, MSWord, MSIE, MSMoney, MSPaint, etc, etc, etc. It's just branding. Sometimes, it can be helpful... if I'm looking for a paint program, and I've got Gnome and KDE both on my system, but I use KDE, I'd rather find a KDE program to do the job. I know that if I find a program called "KPaint" chances are, it'll look and feel like the rest of my apps.

I'd personally settle for getting rid of aRts, but from what I've read, thats planned for somewhere around KDE4.
