If Microsoft were to just take some cash they have in the bank, buy Apple, and port OS X over to the intel PC, this whole Longhorn thing would be fixed.
Microsoft could deliver a great OS that is secure, does everythng they have been promising in Longhorn (almost) and, pardon the expression, "just works"
I would not like this being a Mac user, but it would fix the embarassing Longhorn problem.
1st. unlike machinery or chemicals software costs almost nothing to reproduce.
If you want to license you software under a comercial license and it is really really good, and you price is reasonable, then people will BUY it, just like anything else in this whole world.
If you want to gouge people, then you can hardly blame them for using it and not paying you.
Remember, because it costs almost nothing to make, softwares REAL value diminishes with every copy made, paid for or not.
Software pantents are plain wrong. Software can be protected by copyright , and the nations that allow patens for software will be the losers in the tech world.
I just hope those inovative programmers in asia GPL thier code or we will be lost.
Patents should be limited to physical machinery. Trying to own knowlage is wrong for the world.
I have a 2002 BMW M5. One time on a trip across the PA turnpike I had an interesting experince.
I stopped at a rest area, shut the car off , went in, but when I went to restart it , the tach showed it was still at idle , and the computer would not let the starter engage.
My (then) 15 y/o kid just shrugged and said , I'd reboot it. Well I disconected the (-) battery cable , waited 20 seconds , put it back on , PROBLEM FIXED.
I have a 12" PowerBook, I love it. I was just on Groklaw and PJ admited she uses a PowerBook.
I would love a G5 laptop except for 2 things.
1: Battery life. All that heat has to come from an energy source, so unless you have jumper cables hooked to a huge Cat Battery, the G5 oven will not last long.
2: Heat. I have a Dual G5 PowerMac, and when CPU usage starts to go up, I hear all 6? 7? fans spooling up like some scene for the old movie "Strategic Air Command" getting a 50's SAC bomber ready for take off. This is not what I want in a lappy.
Besides, how fast does a lappy need to be. I love my PowerBook, and I'll bet everyone that has a PowerBook will say the same thing. It is a product that is just right, it really is.
I think the problem here is that any normal person can see the greed of the RIAA and MPAA and thier so called piracy is beyond any form of reasonability.
They are like the 2 year olds screaming "mine, mine, mine" without any rhyme or reason.
Copyright Piracy IS when you take a movie or song, duplicate it on a media like a CD or DVD, and SELL it as if it was genuine.
Sharing a song with a friend so that friend can decide if it is really good enough to BUY, is not worng in my opinion.
What if the movie or song is just bad, rotten, trash? You cet to decide to be a "CUSTOMER" or not based on if you like the product. Having to pay these greedy folks just because you heard the horible song or watched even some of the lousy movie is not PIRACY by any rational thought process.
The RIAA and MPAA do not want customers where they have a choice, but CONSUMERS ready to be culled.
This whole thing gets too much press, and to many good people are being called thieves because of the greed of the RIAA, MPAA.
Well, since NASA is always at the wrong end of the conservatives budget axe, this might actually get the "Great un-washed" to support funding of a return mission.
At first they would'nt care because it is cheaper, and their taxes won't go up, but as pill time was looming, the "Wal-Mart Whites" would cite religion, and demand money be spent to form a rescue mission.
Of course the 'rescue mission' would be packed to the gills with more scientific experiments, but there is no need to upset the folks that only wanted a rescue mission.
I saw some one here had a sig line that says it all:
" WinCE + WinME + WinNT = WinCEMENT "
I think from today forward M$ is going to have trouble getting the computer world (excluding the M$Fanboys) excited about anything.
That is over even if they are and will continue to be rich
Cheers

I was wondering if a test of loading OpenOffice.org writer would be usefull?
Some one here on slashdot aptly said, GTK on OS X is like putting Janet Reno in Playboy.
Kno Kmore Knoppix. Mplayer is done, Europe is finnished for inovation.
I guess we have to look to the Chinese now for inovatave software, along with everything else.
I know it isnt over, but it's like the long walk to the gas chamber. you can guess the outcome.
Sad Day
Yeah, which is why the Chinese are using Red Flag Linux

I have a friend that used to be in state govenment. He was responsible for passing a law that many thought was un-constitutional.
A reporter asked him if he thought the law was in fact within the guidelines of our state's constitution, to which he replied:
"Pal, the only law I ever passed that I was certain was constitutional, was a pay raise for the Supreme Court.

rant off
This is a great idea, and needs to be done. The public good is a reason to take real property.
I hope this can be done, and is done when ever a greedy company holds up life and health over profits.
The whole idea of having a monoply is that being nice to the customer is not needed. You need them, and the other way around.
The idea of a company selling you on something with quality and good service is so, well 70's
Get with it.
Freedom is no longer a right, it is now a pivilege.
Back in the 80's I worked for a wonderfully inovative company called SORD Computer in Japan.
SORD's entry into the 1st laptops was the http://oldcomputers.net/sord-is11.html
SORD was a great place to work and really far ahead of the other companies of the time.
Mr Takayoshi Shiina was one of the true fathers of the micro computer industry but has been forgotten in the press.
Anyway , the IS-11 was fun, and the tape acted like a tape drive , with a directory, not just program recording medium.

All your Orange juice belongs to us
LOL
If you don't play my way, i'll take my marbles and go home
Greed!
The man is sick.
How long will it be untill some kid cracks the DRM?
It would be safer to try to protect nuclear secrets than the holy grail of unlimited free music from teenagers.
The script kiddies will be up dday and night working on the crack for this.
Buh Bye Napster !!!!!!!!
And it is the birthplace of Internet Explorer , M$ did'nt write that either.
Actually the E39 M5 is phuquing awesome.
Thanks

I wonder if BMW uses WinCE?

Insert Knoppix CD, Boot up, go to a root terminal, type $knoppix-installer, follow instructions, no more Windows problems.
It really is that simple

We are talking about generic PC's with Intel chips running Windows.
In this day of Blue-Ray DVD's G5 chips, and the return of *nix this is like stopping the sale of VCR's or 8 track tape players
National Security?, how about stopping flat head engine technology from going to China?

When I renewed my drivers license, I falsified my address.
What did you put down?
1060 West Addison.
That's Wrigley Field!!

The router will support Gopher as it's main protocol.
Why are all things the US government does always so far behind comercial development?
Oh well , it's just the way it is.
