Fair enough. But this is less likely to happen for the same feeble reason open source has been slow to get off the ground in the business world. Liability. People generally tend to trust people with money. (Why? We're pretty stupid creatures I guess) People with money can be sued if something goes wrong. Generaly people could give two shits if a russian is deported and trown in jail, but if you can sue the pants off of somebody...well, $$ talks.

    Sad but true.

  3. Over hyped. on Open Source Firm Releases Patch for IE Bug [UPDATED] · · Score: 4, Interesting
First of all. This 'patch' isn't too extrodinary. This is a plugin similar to the google bar. There is no reverse engineering, thus no threat of DMCA. It's really not a patch, it's more of a work around. It's also a publicity stunt. Upon detecting a spoof, there should me no reason to go to the 'patch makers' website for info when it could be done within the plugin.

Second, it's a horrible precedent for closed source software. Let close source fixed close source. This may seem like a good thing(tm) for the OSS communtity, but you know damn well that not-so-good-intentioned 'patches' will soon follow. Post some source on a site, provide an EXE(that of course didn't come from the source) and you've fished in countless joe users before the real word is out that a copy cat has duped you. Too late for some.

I can only see bad things(tm) coming from this idea. Geeks know who and what to trust, but Joe User doesn't. And when joe user screws up it screws us all.

The sum: This may have a greater negative impact in the long run then the good one it was intended to have.

Considering that many people don't get bonuses, I'd assume any amount would be much appreciated. Then again you may get in trouble both ways. If previous employers fed gobs of bonus money to one of your workers and the other never got a holiday bonus, then to one the bonus may be an insult while the other is joyfully gracious. There's only five of you and you're probably a pretty close group, why not ask them about there previous jobs holiday bonuses.

This is absolutely true. Docking pay will change your exempt status. In essence, if they dock pay, you will also be entitled to collect overtime if you work more then 40 hours according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. A grey area in the FLSA is also dockking pay for things such as doctors appointments. Though not clear in the FLSA, many employers do not dock pay this area b/c they risk changing your exempt status thus allowing your to collect overtime also. My company doesn't dock pay, but charges partial hours against our sick leave in such cases. Not quite sure what would happen if we've used up our sick leave though.

Bars have limits. Most bars have a closing time and many towns, cities, states, or the bar itself have laws/rules that prevent the sale of booze to those who are visibly intoxicated. (exceptions happen) This limits what the person without self control can do to him/herself, but the closing time and intoxicated rule generally don't effect the regular Joe.
It's and online games, yes? Why doesn't this game have a sanity check every eight hours or so and force the player offline for 15/30 minutes. Only since many people have a problem with this game.
