    The ActiveX controls that are used in Internet Explorer are also loaded in the process space of IE. Just try running IE and loading up a page with a Flash animation, you'll notice that there is no flash.exe or similarly named executable listed in Task Manager.

    I don't they'd bother trying to fix/change every line of code, just anything related to authentication and networking.

    How much of that 100 MB of code is related? I don't really know.

    Think of it from Valve's point of view. More likely than not they are already working on scouring their code for exploits and bugs trying to fix them, so that they don't get exploited come release time. They are probably rewriting some things as well, so that when HL2 actually goes out, things won't look like what was expected to people who viewed the source.

    It's hard for a platform that hasn't been out for a year yet to make inroads in the Longest Uptime page. You'll have to wait at least 3 years before you can even expect to potentially see a W2k3 server box on that list (based on the sites currently on it).

    I love the schizophrenic nature of the linux community. Half the people want to replace Windows on peoples' desktops (and some of them understand it would be a major miracle), and the other half want to keep the status quo.

    Or maybe no one will pony up the money, and people will drop MSN as their protocol of choice, and MS will see their bandwidth costs drop.

    Remember, part of doing this is to recoup bandwidth costs. Or so they say.

    Games aren't multithreaded? Bring up a process viewer next time you are playing a game and tell me they run single threaded. The main game loop might be in a single thread and eat up as much CPU time as it can, but I assure you that games will use extra threads for various tasks.

    The company might as well halt all EU business outright then. Since the software won't check for unlicensed copies, people will be able to copy the software as much as they want. That in turn screws the company out of sales.

    That's not a Linux annoyance, that's a game developers annoyance - if you want to play games on Linux, then bitch at the developers... get some friends to bitch at them as well, and suddenly the developers will see a market.

    Yeah, a market of people who bitch, coupled with a history/stereotype of users who don't want to pay will certainly drive the game developers to the platform.

    The cameras all over the store aren't specifically tracking anyone, but trained security can use the shots to effectively follow people as they move through the store.

    And yes, they are sometimes used to follow pretty girls.

    No it doesn't. If they see a discrepancy, they have all those other cameras recording video to catch the exchange of blades from your SO to you.

    That is a general insight into bug testing and perfectly valid, except your statement is a bit flawed.

    If the testers have some general coding and OS knowledge, they can help determine the fix before sending off an issue. It doesn't really matter whether the code is publicly available or not. Testers for non-open source projects can have access to the code as well. The code isn't usually kept in a vault with armed guards protecting it, you know. It is more a matter of having knowledgable and studious testers.

    I had read on the various Apple rumor sites that it wasn't Mac dealers that were receiving the mysterious boxes, but rather Apple Stores. Big difference there. And not unexpected in the least when new hardware is released.

    The Questec system should be used in training umps, not judging their performance on a nightly basis.

    If the umpire needs to have some retraining with the system, they should only do it outside of a game. That would say to the umps that MLB wants them to do a better job, without the heavyhanded smacking of nightly comparisons.

    Actually, the poor choice they made was that they were looking for Quake and then completely turned the image quality to crap, just so their scores in benchmarks would be higher. They didn't optimize anything, they turned off and reduced graphical features.

    I wouldn't appreciate going out to the store, buying the latest video card, then finding out the game I'm playing looks muddy and blurry compared to how it should look.

    Do you remember how a year or so ago ATI released a driver set that reduced image quality in Quake 3 to increase frame rate?

    Here is a link about it in case you forgot or didn't know.

    It just goes to show that both companies play that game, and neither to good results.

    Theft from customers, or theft from cashiers. Take your pick.

    Cashiers have far more ability to steal than customers, as they know the policies and regulations of the store and can find ways around them.

    Great and all, but how does OpenGL handle mice and joystick input?

    Part of the problem with comparing DirectX and OpenGL is that too many people are really only comparing Direct3D and OpenGL.

    How is it that Half-Life 2 could be considered vaporware? A product is only vaporware if it was publicly announced by the maker, and Half-Life 2 was never mentioned by Valve until today.

    Sure, rabid fanboys have been speculating about it for years, but that doesn't qualify it as vaporware.

    Give it 2 years before calling it that! Considering they plan to have it out by year's end, it should never get that far.

    But this rumor isn't that they are buying id Software, it is that Microsoft wants Doom 3 exclusive to the Xbox. It would be no small coup if it happens, either.

    This happens ALL the time in the console world. Sony is particularly fond of this tactic, paying off companies like Square and Eidos (Tomb Raider) so that these companies' games will be released first for the Playstation/PS2 and 6-months later if at all for competitors' systems.

    In fact, I'm pretty sure that Microsoft has already engaged in this practice with Konami for Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance. Just now is the game being released for Playstation 2, yet it has been available for the Xbox for a long time.

    Yes, because you are paying them $200 for a console that cost maybe $400. So they end up losing $200 per console rather than $400 from you not buying it.
