Well since last month the numbers or unpaid volunteer coders exceeded the number of paid ones I don't think its going to be as drastic a move as your stating.
I also don't see why you questioned that Mozilla had been operating as a *real* open-source project. What does funding have to do with anything? Last time I checked ALL the big open-source projects had funding. Being poor and working for free was never a requirement for creating open-source software.
I'd also be shocked if other companies like IBM, Red Hat etc don't add more funding for people to work on Mozilla.
Free opensource software by nature can't be "crushed and killed". Those products are dead not only because of Amiga is bascially dead but also because nobody had access to the source to keep them going.
Amiga was never as popular as linux is now or will be in the future.
Why's that? So the big DTP houses won't move to Scribis. Who cares? That doesn't mean this won't turn out to be a valuable tool for anyone who doesn't have the cash to plop down down on commercial DTP program. Contrary to popular belief free software isn't Always about destroying commercial competitors.
Up till now there simply hasn't been anything DTP running on linux worthing mentioning. I'm really happy to see a workable Pagemaker alternative available on linux. Let's not forget that since Adobe won't tough linux with a 10 foot pole Scribus is well on its way to 100% marketshare on linux.
Gimp+Scribus=quality publishing software for free on a free platform. This will be VERY useful for those schools, small businesses, and users who want to do some graphics work without breaking the bank.
Just because this won't spur a mass migration to linux doesn't mean this software won't be valuable to a hell of a lot of people.
"I hope that this is the first sleep toward the complet independency from Netscape (read AOL)."
Fist step?? Its the first, last and only step. Netscape is no more and AOL is no longer paying anyone to work on Mozilla. You can't get more independent than that.
Like someone else just said, just change the ports to nonstandard ones.
For example "How to Change the Listening Port for Remote Desktop" http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp x?scid=kb% 3Ben-us%3BQ306759
As far as SMB goes well that protocol was never meant to be used openly on the internet so its good that OOL blocks it.
I also wouldn't complain about not wanting to use FTP, since its really not hard to fire up Wsftp and point and click. You really shouldn't be allowing SMB inside your network anyway.
I use OOL and while I'm not a big fan of them, getting around whatever port blocking they do is really quite easy, especially when you have google at your fingertips.
Just to backup what the above says, I can tell the difference as well. My mobo has a generic AC 97 audio(MSI K7TPro2). Anyway that's what I started with when I built my PC a few years ago and left my SB Live out. All of my mp3's sounded really dull. Switching in the SB Live made a huge improvement. I also have Cambridge speakers as well:)
I have no doubt that some of the current crop of motherboards have on board sound that would work just as well for me, but I'd also bet that's not the case for all of them just yet.
That's assuming everyone uses the crap that the OEM's put out. Trust me, a lot of people who have portable mp3 players are listening on Grado's or Sennheiser's with or without an amp.
I'd say bitrate becomes way more important with regards to headphones versus home/computer speaking. A good set of headphone will easily spank speakers that cost thousands of dollars.
Since you don't seem to have a high opinion of headphones, do yourself a favor and spend a little money on a set. It will change your view dramatically and you'll hear things your never heard before.
Of course if ultimate portablity is needed, then you gotta use what you gotta use. I just wanted to correct your statement where you implied using headphone equals bad sound quality. Most people who have bought good pair of cans would disagree.
Wow, so hateful because Linux on the desktop got some needed street credit.
Are your sure your at the right site?
btw I think they were reffering to how efficient linux turned out to be.
If I had to cherry pick a single quote from the article it would be this.
"You hear a lot about Linux not being ready to work on desktops," said HP's Jeff Wood, director of product marketing for personal workstations. "Well, here we have the perfect example of how Linux is more than ready for the desktop -- hundreds of animators successfully used Linux to create a film right from their desktops."
"As for Firebird (a.k.a. the browser formerly known as Phoenix), is it just me or is this the most IE-clone, kiddie like browser."
See above.
IE Clone? Why because you don't want to bother downloading a new skin?
Kiddie-like? Why because they simplied options that most people don't even look at anyway?
For your plugins/skins, use the Firebird specific ones of which their are plently. At phoenix help at last count there were like 55 skins and 53 plugins. Have you even registered at Mozillazine?
Its so lame when people complain but aren't willing to do even basic research.
Only a few companies still use Netscape. I frankly don't even know why AOL/Netscape even bothers anymore. I mean it's not like they are trying to gain marketshare from IE. If they were don't you think they would do more than put up a link on Netscape.com and rely on other websites to link to it for PR?
Netscape died a long time ago but luckily was reborn with Mozilla. Netscape may not give a crap about spending dollar one on PR for Netscape, but conversly it just shows how good Mozilla is that it continues to get good press.
I really wish Netscape would just stop offering Netscape browser for download. Its an insult to the Mozilla browser that they continue to do zero PR effort on the Netscape browser while spending hundreds of millions on AOL advertising.
If it ain't available directly from ati.com (http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html) it ain't official.
I don't even know how the person above found that link and I suspect most other people will have the same problem.
As far as I'm concerned ATI doesn't offer official linux support for 900X series. I'd suggest those of you considering a graphics card for linux go with a company that not only officially supports linux, but has been doing so for a while now.
If ATI is unwilling to say officially on their download page that linux drivers are available and supported then they won't be getting my business.
Its one of the easiest to install and admin linuxs going. Its also the best industry supported distro going. Like someone already pointed out Red Hat+apt-get > Debian.
Easy to use, free, widely supported, plus its the best looking distro out of the box. Plus they are strong supporters of linux and are a large reason why linux is where it is today.
The only thing thing I don't like is how they have gone to a one year support cycle for their free version. But hey, I'm not the one footing the bill for all that testing, R&D, and free updates.
For a Debian Desktop I won't use anything but Morphix or even better whipix. Mainline debian's lack of focus on usability has only resulted in ever decreasing marketshare. Until they get basic things that other distros mastered years ago like a GUI install and HW detection down they will continue to rank among the lesser used distros.
What a waste of money. As a taxpayer who actually ends up footing the bill for this I continue to be outraged that opensource alternatives aren't mandated when possible. The government has a duty to reduce costs whenever possible and this is a perfect example of where they could have done that, yet went with the status quo. Its simply Un-American to waste money like this when there are other options. Not to mention Opensource software has a vastly superior track record when it comes to security, let alone stability.
Sure, use the best tool for the job, but there exists open source alternatives for all the software they are using. The fact that the MS rep had the balls to say this deal "validates the Army's belief in our security model." makes me want to puke. Those billions of dollars lost evey year due to viruses...that is DIRECTLY because of shoddy MS software. When it comes to security, MS is the joke of the industry. Just now are they shipping a server OS that is somewhat secure by default. Of course their client OS is still a hackers delight. When IE and Outlook are involved you simply can't have secure computing. Can't wait till the next version of Klez or whatever hits. Oh and it WILL happen.
Anyway enough rambling. This deal stinks and for all the current governments talk about reducing expenses this is a prime example of how some things never change.
Maybe some people will consider this post a generic response to a situation where OpenSource has lost out to MS in a deal, but I'd say its the businesses and groups whocontinue to blindy by MS software who are the ones that are losing out.
"First, the stickers will almost certainly be so expensive, that only companies that do transportation will afford them, except for some top level executives, "
So its YAHTCATR (Yet Another Handout To Corporations And The Rich). Great.
"Second, the ones who can't afford them, are most certainly not any worse off after than before, they're stuck in the traffic now too, aren't they?"
So why the freebie to the rich then? Why no a freebie to the poor worker? The rich worker will not any worse off then before? Its not like the "regular" worker doesn't pay taxes as well. Why should the rich get better treatment? That doesn't seem remotely fair or democratic to me.
This study is not the proper way to guess how much people are willing to pay. Who cares if the richest 1% is willing to pay $10,000 a year?
Geez thie ONE OF EVERYTHING crap isn't the holy grail or the road to linux dominance.
I really don't feel like pointing out(for the billionth time) why all the myths I've seen today wrong, but suffice to say get over the fucking idea that "Linux" is ever going to mean ONE THING or that by eliminating all other distros but one is suddenly going to get Joe Consumer interested..
btw get back to me when Adobe, Jasc, Corel,Broderbund, Macromedia, MGI Software, and Ulead FINALLY have One graphics app, one interface, and one file format. Then FINALLY they might get somewhere.
Yea I remember reading that and thinking the same thing, its not a "real filesystem". I keep seeing sites hype Winfs as the heir for all MS filesytems when really is turns out its just an extension/service for NTFS.
Btw that article sucked. Maybe they should have actually waited until they had some real information on Winfs before they wrote the article.
"Here's a crappy rundown on filesystems but a new one we know nothing about is coming out Longhorn or something..."

This entire event is only a good thing.
Two points.
Free opensource software by nature can't be "crushed and killed". Those products are dead not only because of Amiga is bascially dead but also because nobody had access to the source to keep them going.
Amiga was never as popular as linux is now or will be in the future.

Nothing
I used to live 3 blocks from there. What a great place to live. Everyone where I live now (East coast) keeps asking why I moved back. :(

Talking about how Microsoft will do anything to undercut Linux in bidding situations and keep it from gaining ANY marketshare
"That's considered healthy pro-competitive behavior."
I'm sure that's the same thing the Mafia says about breaking kneecaps.
Wow, so hateful because Linux on the desktop got some needed street credit.

Ditto, same prob with Google.
It really says a lot about how fickle the Internet really still is.
Heh LMAO

I'd rather see /. used as a PR agency for an excellant and free opensource project as opposed to some of the other crap I see here.
I mean 97% of us don't use and won't everbuy a mac yet nobody complains when we get article after article after article on either OSX or G4/5/6 crap.
I see the Mozilla stuff as a public service which hopefully increase its marketshare among the mostly IE using Slashdot crowd.

Yea because people who buy consumer-level motherboards really buy a lot of ECC memory...
"Grow up, M$ isn't pure evil."
Actually yes they are.
