Is manned flight really necessary ?

Results like these pose once more the question if manned flights ( with the risk of human life loss ) are really -necessary- at this point in time, or if remote controls ( and "remote presence" ) technologies are enough to conduct the operations and experiments...
Why the US government doesnt stop SCO from threatening people -before- the suit is settled ? It sounds more and more like extortion to me and i think they should be stopped until the matter is settled on court.
That sounds a bit a Vernesque view of exploration... i think millionares are better at funding exploration than doing it themselves, somehow i dont see bill gates first human on Mars, if anything because he would give a false impression of what humans look like to eventual intelligent life forms he may step on. Will be martians cheaper to hire than indians ? Only time will tell.
Apart from that i find instant messages much more practical and bandwidth savvy, especially when talking with multiple people from an hotel room that has only dialup.
Still these guys packed up a nice salary... given the "savings" they plan to make these guys used to make 100k per year. hardly sorry for them. welcome back to reality guys:) Guess the time of over hyped companies is coming to an end. Jurassic park was cool but most of people is running windows explorer...
Same here. Now i spend most of my time rewriting code that "young code machines" write (sigh). With the age i grew a bit less productive but far more effective, and i rarely have to rewrite twice.

Many comments were well informed, but the opinion i mande of the space shuttle is that it's a whole design that didnt put security and escape options as a priority in the design from day 1. Maybe it's just an old design, and all that, but i think that NASA now should seriously think about coming out with something radically new, should it take 10 years to develop. Space research is important but i guess that given the situation on earth nobody is in a real hurry, at this point.
Maybe he is right maybe not, nothing gives him right to call people "morons" or "fucktards". He could contribute to improve the programs if he doesnt like them, or even criticize them but in a constructive way... maybe he said better than you could, the only point in his favor is that in your case nobody gives a shit of what you could or could not say.

The funniest part is that they are probably gonna do it ;)
Paid advertisement ?
I think Slashdot should start being fair and mark the "articles" that are advertisement just like newspapers do

Enjoy mate !!
It also means they need a windows license anyway, not to mention a bigger hw configuration to run both worlds. Still makes little sense.
I think at this point we have the extremes to sue SCO for attempted extortion :)
But unlike excel you got the source so its probably just a #define somewhere :)
Hmm i guess cmdr Taco. I have a big visual studio .net banner right on top of the story :)

It's not that sco can claim that the work done by one of its employees effectively belongs to them ?

"The system promises fewer computer crashes and will allow users to delete data from their hard drive. "
I wonder if khtml group should stop allowing Apple to test betas as well

Just my 2 cents.
