  3. Not in my backyard on Women's Institute Consulted on Nuclear Waste · · Score: 2, Interesting

A common theme when it comes to burying nuclear waste is "Not in my backyard." Everybody agrees that it should be done, but nowhere near where they live. This happened with the AECL hearings back in the 1990s. The plan was to dig into the Canadian Shield (which is all Precambrian Shield), and bury the waste safely and backfill it. It did seem technically possible, but the public wasn't going to have any of it. Kind of a shame when you consider that hundreds of engineers and researchers spent a good chunk of their lives developing ways to do this. My Dad is still one of the few remaining engineers there, but I know lots of people who were laid off after the political pressure was against doing it.

    Real shame.

After that job was done, I still did quite a bit of it on the side, but mainly because I did so much before that people knew me, and I had a good reputation for getting things fixed. Not a bad job for a teenager, and it's good money. I think we have to realize that gameplay does win over power in a system or console. Look at Katamari Damacy, that game was amazing, and it only came in at $30 (CDN). I know this is mainly to the PC side of things, but it's the same with the console market as well. The real question is now, how do you let people know that better gameplay breeds better games?

I'm working at my University's helpdesk, and honestly, compared to the other jobs there, it ain't that bad. Sure it pays about $33,000 a year, and I'm kept busy but I have a few pluses going on there.
    1. It's a small school that I finished from recently, and I worked there part time as a student, so I know how the whole place works.
    2. I work an 8 hour day. That's it, no overtime, or require overtime. At the end of the day, I go home, and I don't worry about work. Not a lot of IT jobs that let you get away with that nowadays.
I guess the job is also different in that it's such a small campus, that I can make an appointment to go to someone's office and fix something, rather than do the entire thing on the phone (which I have done before while working for an ISP, and is generally more frustrating). I'd have to agree with someone else's post that says the IT manager has the toughest job. I don't think ours has had any freetime in a while (including during vacation).
  14. My 2 Cents on Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Launches · · Score: 4, Insightful

I've been reading the comments posted before this one, and I have to agree with a few in that the tag line left behind my gamespot puts a negative slant on the game. At the same time, I've read the complaints that others have posted about how this is just an incremental update; and I don't disagree with that claim either. The way I look at it, however, is that at least when I go to drop $60 (that's Canadian $) on the game, I'm not going to be overly disappointed. I really loved the first game, and I'd be kinda P.O.'ed if the game was way different than the original.
It's the same when playing something like Half-Life 2; while I agree the game is big, and has a lot of hype behind it, it's still a continuation of the gameplay in the original game. The difference between Metroid Prime and Half Life, is that one had a longer development time than the other, so you're going to see more changes on the technical level.
I guess it doesn't matter what the reason is why you like or don't like the game, it's how much fun you have with it, and how much you're willing to invest in future releases. The people who like the series will most likely buy the game. Those that don't, obviously won't. I really can't see why people have to complain about something they're not going to play or bother with.

The casing was also clear plastic, and you could see that some of the circuits were wasting away and corroding. We sent it back and got another one, but it didn't work either. 23. Definitely on CSS for the LDP? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I definitely think this CSS should be used as a formatting technique for the Linux documentation project. Since you can also apply to CSS to XML documents, why not just do that instead. Use the CSS to make it look pretty, and create separate style sheets for a GUI browser, and a text based, or allow a user to use their own (I have never seen this though).

I guess the real advantage is that you can easily parse the XML and "port" the documentation to something else as well be it PostScript, PDF, or some other format that toggles your switch. In essence you're really solving 2 problems (if you consider for a moment there are 2 problems):
    1) you make it look nicely formatted and pretty :).
    2) the content is separated from the presentation, so if you want to switch formats later, it should be easy to parse it through with XML, and then set it up for some other document format programmatically.

Just my two cents at least.

I think that Apple would likely dominate with the Mac. We wouldn't have Windows/DOS, but we might have other idiosyncrasies from the Apple world that might have been left in the OS if there wasn't any competitive "instinct" to innovate the product any further than need be.

Instead of DirectX, the big question remains as to if Apple would incorporate OpenGL, or develop their own 3D API. With no X-BOX competing against the PS2 and GameCube, it'd be interesting to see if Sega would still be around (or Infinium La....nevermind, we're talking about plausible things here).

The most interesting thing would be to see how business networking would have evolved as well. Would we all be on AppleTalk for sharing files and printing, and what would you use for a server? There's no WinNT in this hypothetical reality, but would we have a UNIX variant, or something else entirely.

As said previously, a lot has come out of Microsoft's Research division for many different ares of computer science, and most importantly, usability.

    Anyway, that's my two cents.
