  1. My Suggestions on Converting a Garage into an Arcade? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Well, you probably wanna make this a just a cool 'hang-out' place. So, I'd throw a couch and some lazyboys in there. Probably, wanna throw a mini fridge in there with your favorite drinks, too. While you at it might wanna put a big screen in there, and hookup a XBox, DC, Gamecube, PS2, etc. too it.

Thats what *I'd* put in mine. But you seem to want to have a 80s theme also. In this aspect, I'd get a couple of pinball machines, and a couple of your vintage arcade standups (i.e. classics like Pac-man and your personal favorties, mine all time fav being D&D: Tower of Doom). Then, you should look into making a standup MAME box (similar to one Taco has).

Of course, thats what I'd put in my game room. Its all dependent on how much space and money you have really. Good luck and have fun!

About the 'one linux system' idea, the interest isn't there. Explaining to somebody that you could emulate a program, doesn't make any sense when they are already running the native OS anyway.

I'm not saying that linux can't be deployed in institutions such as schools, etc. (and it has, see here); but dumping something like this upon people that aren't interesting, isn't a good idea and is a waste of money.

What *should* happen, is everyone should argee on a standardized benchmark, which is OS & architecture independent, that would become the single number comparsion between two chips. Although, I highly doubt everyone would argree to such a single benchmark....

Umm... what? The upload speed is increased to 48 Kbps, and download is still 56k (although the FCC cap is still at 53k). You wouldn't be able to download at 48 Kbps while downloading at 53 Kbps anyway (or 33.6 Kbps for that matter...) as it all uses the same pipe of 53 Kbps.

Well, I'd take WinRAR instead of WinZIP (its better, imho; its smaller; and it handles more file types). I'd probably also put TweakUI on there, as well as VNC (both the client and the server). A bunch of generic nic drivers. Some sort of ftp client (whatever is your favorite). There are tons of more stuff that you could argue to take, and you could probably take alot of it. And it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to make the whole damn thing bootable, and don't forget to load that generic oak cd driver. 50 mb is alot for a rescue disk....

On the linux side... First off, don't make a jack of all trades windows and linux disc. Make two seperate disks for two seperate OS's. And, before you go making a list of all the linux programs, check out tomsrbt. Although it was made with the 1.44mb limitation of regular floppys in mind, its a great starting point. I whole heartly agree. You could argue that the mp3 rage these days is all because of the media attention Napster was getting during its trial. Every night on the evening news, Napster was the main story, so some guy says "that sounds cool" and downloads the client and leeches the night away. And now that napster is all but completely useless, most people have moved onto other p2p communities (probably Morpheus \KaZaA).

Even in a post napster world, the media likes publicizing(sp?) alternate ways of getting stuff. For example, I was watching CNBC of all channels and they were discussing napster, and one anchor said "nah, napster is dead. Mourpeus is the good one now."

I'm willing to bet that those ads they put in the clients (which are only there if the clients are wiling to have them) are worth just a little over nothing. I think AOL just likes having a monopoly on the whole Instant Message market, probably hoping to get some of those AIM accounts into full-fledged AOL accounts (I'd like to see some numbers on how many people actually 'upgrade' to AOL from their AIM screennames). When they bought up ICQ, that should have been a message to everyone that they just want all instant message traffic to go through their servers for whatever unknown reason.

Anyway, I don't know if non-corpate IM protocals are economically viable at all, especially when ad banners are all but worthless these days.
