I checked and had IMAP enabled, so I changed it on my iPhone too. My iPhone has folders for all my labels now too, and it you click on the folder it downloads the last 50 (or 25, based on your settings) of that label.

Previosly sent mail is in 'sent mail' folder under a 'Gmail' parent folder. Mail sent from the iPhone is in actual 'sent' folder. At least it's not emailing me a copy of my sent mail anymore.

  16. horse racing on Perry's Secret MMOG - A Beast Riding Game · · Score: 1

A friend of mine is really into this arcade horse racing game, Derby Owners Club. I went with him to check it out, it was pretty fun.

If you don't have horses already, you select from a group of random mares and a group of random fillies and produce the horse you're going to race. Each horse has it's own attributes (speed, stamina), which help determine how it best races (try to get early lead or wait until last leg and make your move). You race horses in races of varying stakes, and train and feed them in between. You can save your progress at anytime by printing a little ticket which has the horse information stored on it (magnetically I believe). There is a small ebay market for hacked tickets with horses with maxed out stats.

What really amazed me was how into the game people were. They had 'stable books' full of all the various tickets and horses they used. After you've used a horse enough you retire it and put it out to stud, and then can use it to breed your next generation of horses. The game was the most expensive I saw in the Arcade, and all 8 stations were taken with people waiting at each one. I commented to my buddy he'd save a lot of money if a pc version was available, and he agreed. An MMO makes is even more likely than a stand alone version because of the continual income for the developer. After seeing DOC, I can believe that people would love an online game where you can breed and race different animals/creatures. Different classes of animals with varying skill levels, or the ability to handicap races so slower animals get a head start, these can all lead to a hugely popular game. It was only a matter of time.

Grapes were always hand picked, and now they use mechanical harvesters. If the same economics can be applied to oranges, it won't take long for mechanical harvesters to become popular.

    This sums it up:

"Mechanical harvesting is also cheaper, especially as yields increase: most estimates say that hand harvesting costs $125 to $150 a ton, while machine harvesting costs $65 to $85 a ton. Four hand harvesters can pick about one acre of grapes a day; a mechanical harvester, which uses a crew of five to harvest around the clock, can harvest 10 to 20 acres a day."

  21. Our new system on CA Solar Use Falling Because of Economics · · Score: 3, Interesting

My family recently put in a solar system while constructing our new home, and it's been up and running for about 4 months now. We live on an orchard in California's Central Valley (near Tracy), and we get plenty of sun. The system powers the home and also meets any electrical needs maintaining the orchard may have. Our power is provided by PG&E.

Prior to putting in the system, we estimated our electrical need, and tried to put in a system that would result in not having to pay anything all year. The system ran about $150,000, and the rebate was around $45,000. It's a large array, but we have space so it's kept in a fenced area next to the house, not on the roof. In our previous home electrical bills ran in the $400-$1000 range depending on time of year. Temperatures easily hit 100 degrees for weeks at a time in the summer, last summer we had a few weeks of over 110 degrees. Our electrical need is also high, since we have to get our water from our well using an electric pump, run our air conditioning constantly in the summer (my grandmother lives with us, and is home all day), and we bought some electric appliances.

Since installing the system, we are averaging a credit of $550 a month, which we can carry for up to 12 months. We haven't used the air conditioning, but now the temps are hitting 90, so we'll see how the increase in sun and the increased use of air conditioning balance out. I expect our credit to increase.

For us, the system made perfect sense. The ROI was originally estimated to be about 7 years, and the panels are warranties far beyond that. We purchased electric appliances because we could use them without worrying about driving the bill up. The exception is we have a gas cooktop, which we preferred for cooking. Not everyone has the space to install the amount of panels we did, but neighbors have been stopping by and asking questions, and a few figured out it would be a good investment for them as well. The panels take up about as much space as 3 or 4 of our trees would have, but those trees (almonds) couldn't produce anywhere near the return.

The initial investment was high, but it made financial sense for us, and we had the space to put up a large enough array to meet all our needs. The rebate from PG&E really helped us in our decision, but they benefit every month with the surplus electricity we produce which goes back into the grid. We're considering getting electric utility vehicles for the orchard maintenance, which may also take a larger initial investment, but should be cheaper to run since we can just plug them in instead of filling them with diesel. We're still doing research into how their performance is.
