If the machine is standalone, you lose nothing, except popup spam. But if your computer is on a corporate LAN and has software that depends on that service, then you might have problems. But hardly any software uses that service...
Yes, please explain.....If this type of stuff keeps up (DDOS, viruii, trojans), the Internet is going to go the way of the CB radio....people will say 'screw it' and go back to BBS', cut off their DSL/cable accounts... that though has crossed my mind a time or two...
Quoted from patent: 'The invention allows a program to execute on a remote server or other computers to calculate the viewing transformations and send frame data to the client computer thus providing the user of the client computer with interactive features and allowing the user to have access to greater computing power than may be available at the user's client computer. '
Crap, this looks like it could affect Citrix as well (Metaframe software)... if I interpret this correctly..someone correct me if I am wrong....
There is already something similar to this in every recent car built, the airbag controller. It records several seconds of data recording how fast your were going, when the brakes were applied, etc... they are starting to use these in accident investigations to find out how fast the car was going...etc....
...Shouldn't we be moving toward a model where phone companies transform into bandwidth providers and voice communication service is provided over the same connection as everything else?...
That is what John Dvorak thinks should happen.. I would think it would relieve the phone companies of a lot of headaches...see this PCMag article for his take on this matter...
....In all honesty I would boycott DTV for this, but Dish network isn't available in my area, and Comcast is much more expensive......
Are you not in the continental United States? If so, Dish should be available, just have to find a retailer (Sears, or some local TV/Video retailers)...
'According to the BT researchers, the damage is caused by an increase in temperature that occurs when the power leaks out of the fiber at a bend and is absorbed by its coating. This either causes the fiber coating to burn off leaving the silica beneath exposed or if the temperature is high enough (around 1100C) the fiber itself deforms giving rise to a large permanent optical loss. The failure occurs more rapidly as the power level rises and the fiber diameter shrinks. '
1100 degrees C??? Yikes! Sounds like that would be a fire hazard!
I have always heard that Nickel Metal Hydride are supposed to be very good, long lasting, and not suffer from the 'memory' phenomenon you get when using Nickel Cadmium (NiCad).
And we all saw what happened with that. Demand for booze skyrocketed. Same thing will happen here. The more the RIAA clamps down, the more people will want to find ways around them (if nothing else other than to tell the RIAA to fu** themselves:) !
They must be getting bogged down over there. Over 30 pages of comments, now getting message that they are reloading the database! Site response is pretty slow today.
I'm still doing phone tech and almost pulled my hair out the other day trying to help a user tell the difference between a floppy and a hard drive. Sheesh...
Good enough for me! A few years down the road when I can find one at a yard sale for a few bucks, I wouldn't mind getting another one (X-box that is) and attempting to set it up as a small file server to keep my extra stuff on. Maybe by then, there will be a legal Linux distro out on that system or they will be so commonplace that MS won't bother shutting then down....
Please don't get me wrong....I am not trying to be a troll here, but was just genuinely curious. I have followed these various threads about running Linux on the X-Box both on this site and other sites. The question I have to ask (and it probably has been asked before) is WHY DO YOU WANT TO DO THIS? Is this an effort to tell Bill Gates to stick it up his a** or just for the pure enjoyment of saying 'I did it!'(nothing wrong with that..). Can you get better games for LINUX to run on this console after modding it? Do you basically turn the box into a Linux PC? What next? How do you attach a keyboard, mouse, etc? Though I guess it would make a VERY HANDY server box. Already has an Ethernet connection on it.
I doubt it will ever be repealed. No politician wants his opponent saying this during election season...'So-and-so voted to allow Internet smut back into our libraries that are used by our children'.

Or:
Guy: How do I set up my Powerbook on the network?
IT: You don't. Take it back to the store and buy a Windows laptop, per Company policy.
Isn't this the bunch that is based out of a refugee camp in Palestine? Their site is located elsewhere, but the principle people are Palestinian...

They knew who to blame! :) See quote below:

If it does, will have to have an adaptor because the connector is not a standard USB connector.

ME was kinda like MS Bob, only worse :)
