This is because the shading pixel is not really on top of the underlying pixel, but a little bit left or right from it. This is the difficult part! Don't forget that you don't see the depth just because it has two layers: you see it because the upper pixel and the lower pixel together produces two images: 1 for the left eye, 1 for the right!
If you do this with two screens that are not exactly matched you will most likely lose the effect of 3D.

This is mainly because the melting point and boiling point of water are in the range of temeratures encountered here. That is also where carbon-based lifeforms are usefull. Now on a much hotter planet for instance, COH lifeforms won't hack it, as the COH bindings are too weak to hold on at very high temperatures. In such cases it would be wise to adapt a Si-based form, which has quite similar characteristics to C when placed at a higher temperature. On the other hand, when a planet is much cooler, water is pretty useless as it's only present as ice. Mind you: ice is no good when you are dealing with cell-like organisms (as we are). In such case another liquid is more practical (maybe some very apolar fluid)
We shouldn't decide whether something can be called 'life' just because it looks like us. Life should be quantified in terms of energy and entropy instead

Both BSD and linux are open source, and the BSD license even seems to be preferable to companies if, in the end, they decide to go closed source anyway.

We use so-called micro-arrays frequently, which yield so much information it is not possible to go through all that manually (on average you get about 10.000 "genes" that show changes in expression, after which you have to check the intertesting ones for functionality).
At the moment we can either mess around with MS excel or buy some serious software which is so incredibly expensive only companies can afford it.
Still I doubt whether Perl should be the language of choice due to it tending to be "write-only code". Maybe this book will change my mind though.
