    What he did was probably not the smartest thing. But there was a point where the city SHOULD have known that these where not explosives. He should not be responsible for their over reaction, we need protecting from government wasting our tax dollars protecting us from unknown and often non-existent threats.

    Any bomb squad could have quickly determined that these are not bombs and ended the stupid panic they induced a LOT, LOT earlier. I'm ashamed of they cities reaction.

    The college kid was being a bit dumb, but someone has to point out the publics over reaction and fear. 'There could be bombs anywhere 'is not a valid reason for this type of reaction.

    You are talking about basically a reinstallation of the entire voting system hardware. Although that may be true, it does not address the issues of the study or the studies findings. It does not mitigate the truth about the machines. So the question becomes do we find it acceptable that paper trail voting be required.

    Personally, if machine purchasers/builders could not see this being an issue, yes they should have to reinstall the machines and the process should be forced to be open. I wouldn't sell or buy a car without doors for obvious reasons, no matter who tried to tell me it was a good idea. Paper trails are an obvious requirement even if not enabled as a core functionality.

    Note he doesn't dispute the issue, just implies that dealing with it would take lots of work...

    How are they going to? They better not, well the adult stuff I can understand because it is not private viewing, but I certainly do not see a problem with other movies.

    Stop doing the thought police's work for them, we do not need protecting from ourselfs... just our government. And even then, it is more that they should feel the need to protect themselves from their citizens (if they are doing wrong).

    At the ajax experience Brendan Eich spoke about this and without mentioning company names. The boost in performance in JS will cement web application's future and will bring javascript to the forefront even more as the power language that it is. Combine that with JSON and the module tag proposal, it should be some very interesting times.

    Teach them about copyright, patents, trademarks, and service marks. Teach the intended purpose and the modern day usage. Intellectual property implies this silly notion that someone can own an idea like property, it is not property but an artificial monopoly enforced by laws.

    Please... someone teach them. They are not the same thing and they are *NOT* about how to make sure you paid or that you have some right to get paid. It is about giving people protections by law to encourage innovation in a world where otherwise people would not vest money into items which offered no or little return, at least in theory (another topic all together).

I played CS for years, tanarus for years before that, even played WOW for 5 months and have a lan party this weekend... stupid people do stupid things and let stupid things happen, they also happen to play video games.

    Why do government officials always want to tax things they do not understand? When it turns into real currency, people have to report it as income, or if your smart as a sale and thus you can write of legit expenses of generating that sale. Plain and simple.

    Why not just put a counter on the tube marked for virtual currency currently untaxed, cause that's how the internet works right?...

    A registry only possibly protects against known *and* registered offenders. There are many more people out there that are unknown and have yet to offend, people need to watch and educate their children (even young children), not create an always incomplete and insufficent list of possible threats. The fear mongering in the country is crazy, especially because it distracts us from clear and present dangers.

    Uhm, if they focus on writing to the spec and making their browser work to the spec, this should not be an issue. Kinda like offering a plumbing company help getting their standard threaded pipes to *work* with your new custom thread that you gave away to everyone for free when they bought a sink. The order implies the non-IE browsers have the problem, but I have a feeling it is the other way around....

    SGI needs to come back doings stuff like sun's thumper.

    If they came back w/ network storage, network processing, thin and thick client tablets that auto synced via with the network/wireless it would be a start. We need to stop thinking about technology, and *nix can make that happen... to some extent it has. Look at the mac crowd focusing on apps, and not the os.

    Make tablets w/ only a few gig's of permament storage, lots of memory, and I'd buy 4 right now at $1k/each. Business would easily pay more, we need innovation and good tools, this market stagnation has to end.
