"When an emerging market is noticed by Microsoft they seem to wait and see how it develops. If it appears to be profitable they wade in with thier own version and take it all even if thier own product is inferior - they can use thier OS as leverage (which has happend time and time again). "
Right, because that is just what Microsoft did to Oracle on the database market, huh?
Have you had much success in finding teammates/opponents to play the game(s) you really want to play, or do you find yourself settling for what the rest of the pack is playing?
Right now I play more with my friends (online, through Kai) than with the rest of the community, mostly because there are few people playing other online games. I hope the situation changes... Maybe the problem is that most of those 32K users get online once, can't find anyone to play and never come back.
Try Xlink Kai. Seriously, since there are not that many players on Kai, we welcome anyone that wants to play, specially if you want to play any other game than Halo or Rainbow Six.
I gave up on Live when I learned that there are no MS-run servers for the games, forcing users to run servers on crappy home connections. What makes Live better than Kai? Not much, and Kai is free. And the community is smaller, thus friendlier.
There were two versions of the Mega Drive/Genesis modem here in Brazil, the first one was a solution engineered by Tec Toy *I don't think if would allow online games, though) and the second one is a Xband clone, which would allow "online" (direct dial-up) games.
There was also a third version which was released by a bank for online banking with the Mega Drive!
I doubt they can read PAL-M though. The Brazilian version of PAL is different from all the European ones in that it runs on 60Hz, just like NTSC. But the color information is encoded differently, as in the European PALs (there are many variations, B, D, G, etc).
As someone else commented on the thread, the new system is unlikely to have Phantasy Star on it. And, if it had it, it would be in Portuguese, since an official translation was released here.
With a good, old fashioned VCR. Thus, I only turn on the TV to play videogames or to watch taped shows.
I'm not trying to be an elitist arsehole by saying "I don't watch TV anymore because it makes you stupid", just that I don't watch it anymore because I have better options! Right now I'm about to leave my office, I'll go home, I'll play KotoR for two hours and then off to the pub for a few beers.
Gotta remember to set the VCR before leaving home though:-)
if they don't have roads, how high up on their priority list should "Gigli" be?
Ooh, I can answer that: pretty low:-) It opened here on as few screens as possible and ran for two weeks only.
data on disc is about the smallest thing you can imaginable. there is no place on earth with a digital projector to which such a disc can not be delivered along with whatever other items come in to the outside world. no exceptions.
I tend to agree with that. Fast VPN networks to all those screens would be ridiculously expensive here, delivery a DVD with the 5GB of data would be more sensible. Maybe they do plan on delivering it through network on the bigger, more wired cities, but they probably mentioned the technology just to grab some headlines. Looks like it worked:-)
Here is the website for the company doing this, not a lot of info there though...
Same thing here in Sao Paulo, IIRC. Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil (for those among you that don't know that) and all we got so far here are two or three digital screens.
I believe this movie opened in more theaters here in Brazil than RoTK, and was seen by more people. It was a huge hit here in 2002 I was stupid enough to wait until it was released in DVD to see it.
Not only was it mainly young actors, all but a couple weren't actors before they were picked to appear in the film.
On the commentary track the director states that he only used professional actors for white characters over 30 yo. I don't remember the exact reason for that though.
I'm really surprised with all the buzz on such an old movie (it was released in 2002 in Brazil), but AFAIK nothing better came out here since it. I'll check out Carandiru someday to compare.
I got the pt-br version yesterday, it seems to be pretty popular on the Brazilian blogland.
Here it is:

Incredibly easy to read, if you know the language:-)
Why would I, as a gamer, care about that kind of data? No, I'm not trying to be a smartass, this is a real question.
You see, I have a PS2 and a GC, and I'll soon get an Xbox, but I have to admit I'm in the minority here (read: hardcore gamer, and proud of it) but when my friends ask me about what videogame they should buy, I answer "the one that has the games you want to play".
Right now, what I want to play is Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Drummania, KOTOR and Halo (yeah, I know it's old, but I like it).
Already covered by those that quoted the game "Half-Life". Valve, in an interview to the late NexGen magazine told that they used that story as a source of inspiration for Half-Life.
like Portugese or Japanese. I think I will spend the next few years of my life learning how to speak fluent Modem.
Modem could be useful, but try learning English first: the language is called Portuguese. I'm fluent in the beautiful variant known as Brazilian Portuguese.
Peace:-) I was just trying to be funny, and I'm probably failing miserably at that.
We created the SMB file server specs, and we didn't have the fastest one around, which was embarrassing. So we took our performance team and said "your mission is to make ours twice as fast as this other one on the market."
I understand this to be the admission that Samba was faster than any SMB server MS had in the past, right? See, this is competition at work. Granted, Microsoft tried to discourage people from competing (in the SMB case, by making small changes to the protocols with each release, I believe. Correct me if I my wrong, please) but the Samba team still came out with a better product.
I expect that by this time next year the Samba team will be saying "yeah, we got a faster SMB server than the one in Windows 2003, but hey, they ASKED for it! Do you remember that S Ballmer interview?"...
Windows has been doing that now for quite a while, with the warning bit and all!
"One doesn't need special effects to make a great film, just talented and creative directors, writers, and actors. "
Go make your great superhero movie without any special effects and we'll talk then.

Am I the first to say that? Slashdot, you disappoint me!
Don't *all* search engines have to have, hmm, some kind of algorithm in them?
Marketing speak confuses me! Please stop!

Of course, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

That should explain it :-)

The movie really deserves a big screen, IMHO.

slipped me $1000 cash in an unmarked white envelope
Just out of curiosity, what did you do with the money? :-)
You hear that? It's the sound of the joke flying over your head...
It's funny. Laugh.

At least my household never got phone calls from perverts offering pics of underaged teens, unlicensed pharmacy ads, etc
Can I have you phone number? Problem solved...

I'll wait for Robotron 2084, where we'll have robots ready to kill you on sight.
Dude... It's supposed to be funny! Enjoy it!

Really, it may not be you kind of humour, but I'm having fun with the discussions on
