You're probably right, and it most likely won't be used for that. The problem arises from the fact that it could be used like that. If the intent of the law is something different, then the law should be re-written to be more clean on its intent, so that it cannot be misused.

As one other poster pointed out, a perfect example of how the law in its current state could be abused would be the news crew that's doing an investigative report or expose on the movie theater concession stand and its health violations (or something like that). Pissed off movie theater owner/manager doesn't like this, and calls the cops. News crew could be prosecuted under this law.

If a law can be used for something other than what it was intended for, it's too broad. Just because it "probably won't" be used for other purposes is no reason why it should be allowed w/out revision.

However (and I could be wrong, since I haven't RTFA yet and am just going by comments, so you can ignore me if u wish :), I believe that according to the proposed bill, it's a crime to take a picture or make a recording in any building that currently is showing copyrighted content. So even tho the TeeVee is off, there's other screens in the store that are still probably playing movies, and therefore you are still breaking this wonderful (proposed) law.

And let me tell you, when you catch them, you do not want them to be caught without a law specifically forbidding the exact method they employ

I think that's the important part... These new laws they're passing are unneccessary. Don't we already have laws that make copyright infringement illegal? Which would mean that if someone actually did tape something in a store like this, they would be infringing copyright, which we already have a law for.

    Argh.

It's like drugs. The drugs themselves shouldn't be illegal. If someone wants to purchase and/or use drugs, it's their body, let them. If they start doing things because of the drugs that affect other people (like robbing, shooting, driving cars into things, etc), then they should be prosecuted for the crimes they commit. Another example of redundant and unneccessary laws.

We already have laws for the crimes, we don't need laws for every possible method or action that might lead you to the breaking of the already existing laws.

Um, MS Office costs like $140 in vietnam, where the per capita annual income is only $420. Maybe that's why they steal it.

I don't think you're comparing like items... the MS software is obviously copied because it's priced way too high for the market. Violating the GPL is a completely different issue. The motivation would be different, since the cost factor isn't there..

I guess what you're trying to say is that if they don't respect IP in one instance, who's to say they wouldn't in another instance. Which may or may not be true, I just don't think that one being true (copying MS software because it's so pricey) neccessarily means the other will be true (violating the GPL just because they can).

    www.gtracer.com A
    gtracer.com MX 10 mail.gtracer.com

And then you'd just want to configure your mailserver on whatever machine is answering to that IP so that it routes everything @gtracer.com to your user account (in sendmail, you'd use the virtusertable, and configure gtracer.com and mail.gtracer.com in the local-host-names. There's probably something similar in pegasus).

The caller ID/answering machine seems to work quite well for me. The caller ID gives me a good idea most of the time who's calling, and then the answering machine gives me an extra level of protection. You know, there's some times when you really don't feel like talking to someone, but if it's really important, you'll make an exception. The answering machine lets me decide based on what they want, and then I can decide when to fit them into my schedule. Besides, my parents seem to like to use calling cards from home, so I'm always seeing these weird out of state calls from them on caller id... so the answering machine is neccessary in that instance too.
