  1. Same exact setup here.. try the new version on No Next Q3Test · · Score: 1

The first one that came out hurt to play in Linux or Windows, but 1.08 is much smoother even if it isn't as pretty as with a TNT. It's still not liquid smooth like Q2 though.. if it doesn't make another improvement like it did between the first test versions, looks like I'll be getting a new celeron, mobo, and TNT2U.

So when they let all the regular E*Trade customers in on it I just went that way, and filled out my profile again not being so conservative, and was granted. I didn't get in because of the $12/$14 thing, and now they tell me "Sorry, you did the Wrong Thing by going through the other way, and you're no longer an affinity member." Hearts in th.. *mumble*

For the first year or so using Gimp, I didn't really see what the big deal was. But after reading the manual and playing with it seriously, I see why it can compete with Photoshop. I wonder if someone made a new interface for it to make it feel and work more like Photoshop, more people would convert.

  10. IRC Instant Messenger? was: IRC? on Microsoft and AOL Fight Over Instant Messaging · · Score: 1

I thought about that a while ago.. building IRC messaging into an AIM or ICQ client, or even just a standalone messenger. It could do pretty much everything ICQ and AOL could, and even have different modes for messenging depending on if the users want to chat in single messages (ICQ), AIM-style chat windows, or ICQ-style chat windows. I'm not aware of any programs that would do this right now, does it sound like a good idea to anyone else?

The only program I can see would be how to take care of nicks. The most intuitive way would be to use addresses like MagPulse@efnet. The client would have to connect to all the different IRC servers though, or at least connect and disconnect, a la GameSpy.

It rips and encodes entire CDs in ten minutes on its own on my PII at 96Kb/sec, and names them too. I have a regular IDE drive, and it configured it without my help. Before, the only program that would rip with my drive was WinDAC, and the Jukebox rips four times faster. I think this *is* significant, because of how easy and quick it is; and also because it feels safe ripping CDs with a program made by a big company.

I never had Linux crash on me in the 2 years I've been using it, so I kinda blew up when that happened. I have a Dell XPS H266 running at 266, it's been very reliable, it has 128 megs of RAM, I'm running a newly installed copy of Red Hat 5.2 with X version 3.3.2 and the Millenium II driver that came with it. I didn't really expect help, I just thought Linux was never supposed to crash on a normal computer like mine. I was running Netscape 4.08 alone with a couple of other things, but everything was run as a user, not root.. I didn't think anything was supposed to be able to bring down everything including the network. The only things I've changed lately are installing KDE pre2 and kernel 2.2.1, but KDE was run as a user..
