I don't even have 2 choices. It's comcast or dialup and there aren't even sub-40 year old telephone lines in this apartment complex.
This whole RCN thing is just Comcast deja vu. I wish Gates would set up billions in some non-profit for shit like this and not just malaria (yea, malaria is important, so is broadband and he's an American ffs; we already give out more foreign aid than anyone else without him).
i can agree that turbine is far less evil than nearly any other gaming company and that certainly goes double for mmos. unfortunately they cater to the carebears only, fucking over the entmoors players even more with the latest release. so while they have an excellent start to a pvp system in lotro, it's been left to languish along with many user's subscriptions (including mine, i pre-ordered MoM for all the extras and didn't even play through a whole level of it, pve is fucking boring, i played all summer last year and even got my g/f, who hates wow, to play). i never played ac, a lot of lotro players are from daoc and ddo because turbine really only seems to have the staff to keep one game going.
it's sad to read this. it really seems like they've resorted to back alley blowjobs and one can only assume that it's because they're hurting for money (unlike wow, which sucks at everything except ADD match making for teens).
the worst part is that where i'm at there are no alternatives unless you want to pay to lay phone lines for even worse service. they have local monopolies all over and they know it.
Nothing happened to them when they imposed a 250 GB download per month cap totally violating the original contract agreements of millions. Want to bet it's in the fine print that they reserve the right to fuck you any time they want?
We use a program called SynchronEyes which does most of these things, allows you to see essentially thumbnails of what each machine is doing, see its status remote on/off etc. It's Windows only. I see they've changed their product. It's called SMART Sync now. I don't see pricing which is probably not good. Here's a link It's a pretty front end for VNC like functionality which would be free/oss but nowhere near as easily set up (but I'd wager largely what people will say since you specifically mention Linux and Windows and it works on both). I'm not really an expert on this part, but SychronEyes has worked well, after I added it to a custom Ghost image for that lab and set the clients to use hostnames instead of usernames for identification. It might be overkill for what you need though.
I'm the son of one. That word "Should" is pesky. Usually law enforcement will just ask the 3rd party for the information and it's handed over without question (I know this first hand). Just because they Should ask for a warrant just means that unless it's written as Shall, it won't happen. I didn't read the article. If Obama is going to use this as the basis for the law I hope it's carefully edited; the saddest part being that one is needed at all.
this has been done for years, it's just not money that changes hands it's other hacked accounts/access/etc, irc is where i saw it, i'm sure there are other venues as well.
No, it's more akin to them putting wax paper around the cheese and putting it on the burger then wanting to charge you for removing it, after you already got the burger and paid for it. (sorry I'm working within your bad analogy)
Yes, I do. Good people break bad laws, it's called civil disobedience. I was going to buy this game until I read this, I was just waiting for the price to come down a bit since the reviews say it's good but not much different than the original (which was amazing).
Try Shadowgrounds, it's an awesome indie game (also on Steam). It reminds me of the *very* old Crusader series from like 1994 only with better graphics and cool physics. I played the whole thing through in like 8 or 10 hours but it was only $5 or so too.
notice it says law student, and he's at yale. so unlike you, he's very unlikely to have ever lived the real world, where the auspices of his parents money can't protect him from reality forever (or can it?).
it hardly matters at this point. obama has kept a huge # of bush laws in tact and is backing the riaa mpaa and acta, they allowed the patriot act to be renewed, etc.
i am neither a democan nor a republicrat. what is the difference between the two again? why are there only two in a supposedly open democracy/republic? i agree, the us is already a police state, they're just turning the screws now to finish locking everything in place, making it harder to leave (TSA harassment/longer more involved processes for getting a passport).
there are some really scary stories out there, check out the fema camps.
i'm very anti dna storage, obviously this data will become available to corporate wolves with insurance companies leading the pack.
Blizzard (possibly the most evil gaming company to convert from awesome indie hood to 1984), will almost definitely try to do tiered access the same way they do with WoW, oh you didn't buy the expansion? Well you don't have to, but you will be the handicapped of Azeroth with no special parking, to the point that not buying the expansions means you've completely wasted all the time money you DID invest. I notice you didn't provide a link to your assertion so I'll just spout my opinion the same as you.
In addition, the most purchased game EVER, Modern Warfare 2, does and did have a $60 MSRP, and is still selling as such on Steam and probably elsewhere. No, I don't own it; nor will I.
I am an avid, long time gamer (25+ years), I supported Blizzard from Blackthorne on 3.5" floppy to WoW; never again. They've proven money is more important to them than anything else, their customer service is abysmal, their inflated monthly fees for a 5+ year old game are sad, they're pro-censorship and anti-freedom at every level. Their enormous Asian market keeps them afloat I'd wager. Yes, they have polished releases where almost no one else does. That's the one thing they have left, I wonder how long before it goes too. Once bitten twice shy? I got sick of re-buying scratched games and whatnot.
It seems like they will be milking the SC2 and Diablo III releases for as much as they can. I would rather seem them charge $80 or $100 up front and include everything than do something insidious like this which contributes to the DLC debauchery, which I think is wrong generally, as has already been posted, developers are now leaving things out on purpose to charge for them later.
I used to scoff at people who said PC gaming was dying. I've since sadly joined their ranks.
absolutely true. as is the comment a few paragraphs up from someone else abotu being treated like janitors. there are many many overpaid manager types who contribute nothing, where i work employee to manager ratio is nearly 1:1 secretaries make almost as much as i do but i'm responsible for 600+ users and at least as many computers with 0 respect for me and even less for my time.
yeah, it's called capitalism. tons of people work doing what they hate because they couldn't SURVIVE otherwise (or at least that's what they have convinced themselves of, and for most people it's true).
and yes that means a huge waste of talent and potential and definitely that you're having resentment taken out on you regularly; i used to work hotels, i can attest to this.
i would say this is true for 90% of people if not more.
pro-offtopic-tip: not being a rude asshole can go a long way with any kind of customer service people
There are already a lot of sites that detect adblock plus and won't display anything until you disable it and will tell you so. The best example I can think of off the top of my head is cbs.com which has all the star trek and twilight zone episodes. You used to be able to find both elsewhere but they've mostly been DMCA'd off. It will tell you you have ads disabled and as soon as you turn off adblock it plays. It also seems to scale commercials so the more you watch the more commercials it starts injecting. I've seen other sites give similar warnings because of NoScript.
the iphone doesn't win on features, it wins on status symbolism ($800, really?), flashy advertising, and eye candy.
disclaimer: i don't even own a cellphone (or a tv, yes sometimes you need to be disconnected) but i notice that this is definitely true with people i see around me all the time, and i can give specific examples if need be. there's a lot of keeping up the joneses involved here.
where i grew up and came from "piracy" goes by another name: SHARING
there was a time of innocence, when no one cared and people sponsored events to trade programs (apple pickers?) before the "don't copy that floppy" stickers became ubiquitous, the BSA went around like the Empire and the rest is history.
i like the civil disobedience of the pirate bay and their ilk, go Swedes go
this game is really really bad, it only has a player base because of tits and stupid kids who like to sit in huge groups at the entrances to low level zones and kill lowbies over and over and over
what killed it for me after defending its shittastic launch was that every subsequent patch introduced more problems than it fixed, like 10k ping spikes and CTDs where there were none.
class balance is a total joke etc.
the only thing i miss and think should have been put in to other games is the horse-sprint
i only know one person who still plays, and they're a huge EVE fan too.

you say, both anonymously and with delicious irony, on a heavily moderated forum. el oh el.
I assume you mean the baby boomers who started this shit in the first place. Aka the greediest generation.

Okay Mr. Blizzard Troll Fanboy, I'll bite.

heh can you give me the ability to travel FTW?
