  1. REPLY: Use your editorial powers, editor. on On the Matter of Slashdot Story Selection · · Score: 1

Make it clear in the story submission area that linking to your own blog which gives a summary of a story and a link to the story is not desired. Heck, even be a bastard and say you reserve the right to edit the submission to give the actual link. I hate to bring in this site, but Digg has that problem (people linking to their own blogs) and they constantly rake people over the coals over it. Use your superior position as editor to stop that crap.

Regarding someone who posts really good stories over and over, let them. Use your ability to talk about Slashdot (as you have done) to disclaim that you are those people if you think it is a problem. (Again, hate to say, but Digg has this same problem with AlbertPachino and a few others.)

You encouraged us to talk about this subject and not talk so much about Digg, but I think that is entirely the point. You are acting in Digg mode and taking what you got. A lot of crap bleeds through on Digg because the editors (read: users) aren't bright and they don't have an editorial backbone. You are an editor, and we come to you for the edited stories. EDIT! Add a disclaimer if you have to.

PS: Now for my small side indulgence. I wish you would increase the story rotation or have a section of the website with a higher story rotation. Something to compete with Digg, but without the infestation of 13 year olds.

When Master of Orion III came out in 2003, it was widely acknowledged as a horrible, horrible game. At least, among anyone who played it. But reading _some_ of the review sites, you wouldn't have known it. I mean, this awful game was given outright glowing ratings so much that you had to wonder if it was sarcasm. Take this sample of the review of just the sound from the game, where they cover one of the more annoying, short, and repetitive aspects: the dialog with aliens...

The sound is good to excellent, making full use of your speakers' dynamic range. I always turn up the speakers when I've gotten a diplomatic message to hear the wonderful alien voices. The music is stellar, haunting, stirring and intriguing by turns. I never had the urge to turn it off and still find it compelling.

Summary: 4.3/5 *Note: 2.5 is average ...I wish I could say it WAS sarcasm, but it struck me as something different. I am by no means a big game player. I might go out and purchase one or two games a year. But the best I could figure was that these guys were being sported free copies (and probably advance copies), and didn't want the gravy train to stop, so they keep on giving glowing reviews.

IN SHORT: I rate the integrity of any game review site on the inverse of the rating that they gave Master of Orion III.

I found this out when I brought my cable modem over to my brother's in order to help diagnose his problems. It connected to the network, but then all HTTP traffic was redirected to a page saying to call Cox for support. Cox tech claims their software won't allow them to provision that model because it is too old.

Turns out, my brother's ethernet connection on his cable modem was blown. Luckily for him, Cox gave a 1 year warranty on it since they sold it to him.

I'm just wondering how long before Cox pulls something on me like DirecTV tried and made my hardware stop working then claimed the issue was on my end.

I suppose for some it is better to have an all-in-one device. In the extreme, and as an example, I'd consider an HDTV with any kind of built in player (DVD/CD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, VHS) to be a niche product.

Blu-Rays can, in fact, also read DVDs. It just takes more hardware (a second laser) and firmwire to do it. Higher cost on the hardware side, but if it really is a convenience, you could purchase it.

All of this talk about HD-DVD players also being able to play DVDs... is this really a significant feature? You've already got a DVD player today. You can pick them up at Wal-Mart for $35. Even if neither one of these formats could play regular DVDs, you could still have your HDTV hooked up to a regular DVD player and one of these next generation jobs.

I find any argument along the lines of, "Blu-Ray doesn't do DVDs? I'm going for HD-DVD!!" to be academic at best.

They had no idea it was adware/spyware/malware causing the problem, no idea how to get rid of it. It was just that the computer was slow and it was time to buy a new faster one.

The only time someone came close was when they noticed their Internet connection had a lot of pop-up ads. (And even then, they'd click on the "pop up ads" to close them, when in fact, they were image advertisements on the middle of a webpage, which when they clicked on it, would open up an ad. So then they complain that they close one ad and another comes right back up.)

The worst Spyware that I saw was one that stuck itself into IE, I think it was eGames? Whatever the name, it would load all sorts of other spyware packages onto the computer. Malware loading malware!

Their own PA-RISC will be phased out, but its okay, because nobody would want it in a few years. SPARC is completely worthless because it is an old fashioned RISC processor. Embrace the new Itanic CPU like our (then, before she was fired) CEO has! (Followed by the parade of 100 slides.)

We thought it was silly that HP was throwing away a perfectly good platform and throwing all their customers over to the Itanic commodity CPU. Which, of course, wasn't a straightforward transition because there was no binary compatibility. But there were a lot of vendor promises. (KEYWORD ALERT! "vendor promises" is a tip-off that something is wrong.) And frankly, we really didn't believe them. It sounded more like marketing / sales / VPs were driving the change and the technical crew were taking a back seat, but being called to duty to try to come up with justifications that their customers could buy into.

That was about five years ago. Fast forward to today. The skeptical audience was right, and the sales droids and their vendor promises were wrong. And the sales numbers go to show that you still can't sell a technical audience with just marketing propaganda.

I think my summary (epitath?) for Itanium would be, "A processor platform designed for computer company VPs but (un)sold to a technical world."
