Great attitude. Do you wear seatbelts? After all, your car should be safe enough without needing them. They're purely optional.

A seatbelt is a great device to help protect you should you have an accident. You would be crazy not to wear one, infact it's illegal in many places not to use one.

Of course, it's best not to crash rather than rely solely on a seatbelt.

In short, a firewall isn't a replacement for applying security patches, it's there for damage limitation.

The problem here IMO is a lack of social engineering. Microsoft state that when using a limited account, things might not work. There is no mention at all about the fact that your operating system is less likely to be destroyed by viruses or [spy|mal|ad]ware whilst using a limited account.

IMO, when XP is in workgroup mode it shouldn't be possible to make a user an administrator. Couple this with the administrator account that has a mandatory profile (and maybe a session time restriction) to prevent users from using the administrator account as their normal logon, and we might stand a chance of seeing better security on Windows PCs.

    9 - somefile.mp3

Lucky you. Took me 6 hours to install it over steam, but I downloaded it well before the official release date, so that I could play it as soon as it was released.

It took another 2 hours to get a game started: it crashed to the desktop without an error every time I tried.

I unlocked the game at 8am 16/11/2004 (GMT), and was playing 15 minutes later. Not had a single crash.

But then "load" and "load" and :oad": it seems every five seconds the fucking game has to load the next bit of content: that is so 1990s: haven't these guys learnt anything.

Wow! you must be racing through the game very quickly and missing lots of the gameplay if you find it loading content every five minutes.

The worst level (the level with the zombie hunting priest if you've played) the level is split: each time you cross this split you have to re-load: and you inevitably cross over multiple times doing the level. The guy who designed the level with this split in the middle should be sacked.

Not seen that at all on the Ravenholm level. I'm quite surprised you say that, as the map boundaries always seem to be far away from the next/last monster. I've not played the entire game yet, but I certainly didn't see it on the map you talk of.

I do see the stutter bug every time the game autosaves, kind of annoying, but the game itself more than makes up for it. Looks like there will be a patch RSN.

Thinking about buying HL2? Take my advice and wait another five years for these munchkins to fix the bugs.

Yes, big problem. The official stance from valve is that, "it is not supported at this time". - Could be a yes, could be a no. Knowing this in advance, you could link your purchase to a new account if you intended to pass it on once you have finished it.

So you agree it will be cracked and therefore this will do nothing to decrease piracy, and you also agree that they could drop support for it and then you're out all the money you've spent on their crippled games unless you pirate it...So the legal customers are left out in the cold while the pirated play the game.

The four classes of works exempted are:

A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.

    (4) Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling of the ebook's read-aloud function and that prevent the enabling of screen readers to render the text into a specialized format.

If I might step in here:

At first I was against the whole concept of steam, but knowing that I have no choice to play HL2, I decided to create an account. Having used it now for a period of time, I find it to be quite good.

I have no real problem with the steam "product activation", if it prevents piracy and doesn't cause a major problem for the user then thats good news isn't it?

The product activation you talk of in steam, is simply a case of entering a key found with your media when you install the game for the first time, Subsequent installs don't require the key, even when installed on another computer.

though it seems silly to force legitimate users to go to the extra trouble

Extra trouble? You only have to enter your CD key once to associate your purchase with your steam username and password, you can then install steam on any computer, download all the required program files and play your licensed game simply by logging on to steam with your user/pass. I can remember a username and password easier than a CD key, so how is it more trouble? I regulary have to nuke this windows box and reinstall it, the ability to install steam, log on and have all my games auto-install with the latest versions makes life so much easier. I'm afraid that your arguement is invalid.

The only concern I have with steam is if valve drop support for it, leaving my HL2 game unplayable, but I could easily go download a crack and continue to play should that happen.

This was enough for me to cancel my retail order and purchase through steam instead, and if all the other CS fans have done the same, then Vivendi will have already lost out in a big way, especially when you see the number of full CS source servers there are at the moment.
