Same here. I couldn't get usable framerates in most places on my Powerbook G4 867MHz, even at 640x480. This is kind of sad because with well written code, like Quake 3 Arena, it pushes about 90FPS at 1280x854 (native LCD resolution)
Either the game companies don't take macs seriously enough to write well-optimized code for it, or something is wrong with my machine. }:)
I have a "disconnected" analog line that has dialtone, and if you dial any number other than 911 it says "We're sorry, but this line can only dial 911".
However, I doubt the phone company is obligated to do this. If they need my pair or line card for another subscriber, they will probably reuse it and that dial tone and 911 dialing ability will go away.
Of course, the procedures probably differ from company to company. I use Bellsouth here.
Colleges are so obsessed with getting students to take 15 credits a semester and up that it gets scary.
Take 12 or less credits per semester. It may take you an extra semester to finish, but you will be much less stressed and will likely do better in the courses you take.
Being able to get sleep while in college is a great thing; you think much more clearly when well rested.
Don't give in to the "take 15" propoganda; my friends who took 15 were always exhausted and inundated; I took an extra semester and a summer semester to finish and actually managed to have SPARE TIME in college!
Smaller die size will have the same number of pins. The electrical interface to the chip will be the same; the only change will be the physical size of the die and interconnects in the package, and perhaps the clock speed may be a bit faster.
Even if it's to give you information that might save your life? IE, don't eat the beef you purchased from us yesterday because you might get a fatal disease?
Sheesh, there's worrying about your privacy, but not letting them contact you for ANY reason, even a life threatening one, is going a bit too far.
What I don't understand is people who complain about being bothered by folks calling their cel, who don't TURN THE DAMN THINGS OFF.
Celphones have an OFF button damnit! If you're going to be busy for the next hour, or in a movie, etc., just turn it off! Anyone who calls can leave voice mail if they really need to contact you.
If your phone annoys you, turn it off for a while! Try it; it's amazing how liberating it can be.
If you put plenty of RAM in the system, you can run a linux CD distribution like KNOPPIX and eventually all your frequently used stuff will be in RAM cache.
CD-ROMs tend to be really quiet and reliable, so this may be a potential solution.
When doing DVD transfers, pretty much all the studios have been doing the film transfer to digital at HD resolution, then downsampling to DVD resolution (720x480) afterwards for the DVD release.
By doing this, they already have the HD transfer in the bag; when it comes time to release the movie in HD they just grab those bits, compress them into whatever whiz-bang format HD-DVD will use, and there you have it, millions of dollars made with almost no additional investment.
Frankly, any studio doing a film transfer today that doesn't do it at HD resolution is definitely not thinking ahead.
The problem is we likely won't see HD releases of our favorite films for a long time. Look how long it's taking to get the Star Wars trilogy (due end of this year), and how long it took for various Disney animated features to come out. Fans of those movies will probably have to wait another 10 years to own HD-DVD versions.
Not to mention the sneaky vendor lock-in that the speedpass causes.
I normally go to the most inexpensive gas station I can find on the right side of the street I'm currently travelling on. I don't want to have to choose Exxon because of a silly speedpass thing. Besides most stations take credit cards at the pump these days.
Except Shell, which one out of three times asks you to go see the attendant when you try to use a CC. I just drive off and find another station; I'm not giving them my business if they don't offer me the convenience other stations do.
Actually, Li-Ions are very efficient when it comes to charging and discharging. I think the numbers were over 90% when I last checked them.
Laptops get hot when plugged in because of cheap regulator circuitry at the power input. Remember, there is no incentive to be frugal with power there because you are plugged in and have lots of chunky KWH coming out of the wall. My Powerbook gets very warm on the rear right corner, where the power cord plugs in, when it is plugged in. Definitely a voltage regulator module (VRM) there.
The actual charging process is very efficient, however.
I've used my Powerbook G4 in 90 degree F + heat while doing CPU heavy stuff and it's been fine. The fans start blowing big time but it's stable as a rock.
You're thinking of the (much) later Unidisk 3.5 drive, which used 3.5" double density double sided microfloppies.
The 5.25" Disk II, which stored 140K, was single sided and had a constant velocity. It could store more because it used GCR and because Woz was a frickin' genius.
The sad thing is that Steve Wozniak all on his own designed a 140K per side drive that was about four times as fast as the Atari drives using commodity parts, and Atari, with access to all their specialized custom stuff, was only able to come up with the crap they did.
It's one of those great big mysteries of the industry...
The Apple drive wasn't more expensive than an 810, either...
What's funny is most disks labelled as "Single Sided" worked fine on both sides. I think the disks came off the same assembly line, they just labelled half of them "double sided" and sold them for 50% more...
I never had an Atari, but they had neat graphics ability. It was more of a C64/128 competitor than an Apple II competitor. I do remember the 810 disk drives being gawdawful slow, and only holding around 90K per disk. Apple II drives held 140K!
Jeez, who cares. It's his money to spend. If he wants to put 200kW of heating elements in his yard so people admire the pretty red glow, that's his perogative; he's the one paying for the power.
I'm so tired of all this "reduce reuse recycle" propoganda crap. Get over it, people, as long as we drive cars and use our computers we're being hypocrites anyway. If you want to live in the stone age, be my guest but stop dictating what others can and cannot do.
What if the virus mutates into a form that starts attacking all cells, then this virus gets loose?
Genetically engineering viruses sounds like a very dangerous task to me, especially if you make mistakes. We definitely don't need a worldwide "super-virus" epidemic that leaves half the population dead.

BIG difference here. You have to pay *MONEY* for Windows upgrades, whereas upgrading a linux box is entirely free.
Since Microsoft forces people to pay money to upgrade in order to close security holes, this is what makes them morally questionable.

Why not just tell them to use Mozilla or IE? If you've tested it and it works fine under Moz, I don't see why you can't use recommend both.
I understand not recommending Safari if you haven't been able to test under it, but why not Mozilla?

Has anyone noticed their latest upcoming cheapquel?
The Lion King 1 1/2
Yep! One and a half. 1.5.
What's next, Sleeping Beauty 1.666666666... ? How about The Little Mermaid 2 + (3pi * x^2)y + 1 ?
Or maybe they can start numbering them like Linux kernels...
"Hey, wanna go see Mulan 2.4.24? I heard they fixed some of the animation bugs..."
But I digress. }:)

Care to site a source, bub?
I've always heard it as the Illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator.

Firewire drives are simply ATA drives in enclosures that have a firewire ATA bridge in them.
Unless you need the portability, it's better to just plug the drives directly into an onboard ATA controller.

-Z, picky.
No, because the "accidental" making of such requires billions of years, not a few minutes in a lab.

Whoops, forgot to link that. Sorry!
Everyone remembers Apple II and C64, but does anyone remember Atari 400/800?

I dug this up in my closet recently. Very amusing little book:
