    We're at Point A.

Observable energy at Point B only came into being 4.999bn years ago.

Result is that we, at Point A, can not yet "see" Point B because it's observable emissions have not been in existence long enough to have traveled at the speed of light to our location.

So gravity affects things faster then light right? Because wouldn't that be the only way to observe gravitational affects on other observable objects which are closer to Point B then we are? I believe you are saying above that a EE w/ a PhD should be able to be an electrician.

If so, I disagree with your analogy, but not necessarily what you say in your post overall.

As a EE who worked odd jobs for an electrician I can say that theory and practice are very different things. I would not hire a PhD EE with 20 years experience unless those 20 years were spent wiring houses (or whatever I wanted the electrician for). They are not equal. No more equal then a veterinarian is equal to a human cardiac surgeon--yeah they both work on living beings overall, but if my dog is sick (with no injury) I want the vet with years of experience to help it, not the human cardiac surgeon.

But I do agree that "unionizing" will do nothing but harm in the long run for IT workers. It will increase costs and complexity, which is not a good thing long term.

If there were someone standing 20' away from a playground taking "up skirt" pictures of my daughter while she was going down a slide I would be full of many emotions, though one specifically would probably dominate. Under the law I would have no "right" to stop this person from taking this picture or others like it, I would have no right to force the destruction of this picture--the best I could do would be to prevent future pictures by blocking the shots or by leaving.

Though I'm curious at exactly what punishment I would receive by a jury if I assaulted a person who was doing this, would they dismiss the charge against me because they believed that it was justified?

My setup is simple fail-over, but I would imagine that using a hacked up DD-WRT or similar router that accepts PC Card or USB cellular WAN connections you'd be able to setup some rough traffic routing etc if you needed (beware the typical 5GB monthly cap on the cell connections)

I think the cellular cards are perfect because they provide DSL-like speeds and are not susceptible to very local disturbance (like a pole in your neighborhood getting hit by a truck, or falling branch in a storm) -- so you can literally be disconnected physically from the world for as long as your local power holds out and the towers stay up (this is sometimes hit-or-miss, especially in an extended city/regional power outage ... where I used to live across town the closest tower apparently had no backup, so a power failure meant nearly complete loss of cell signal, but at my new location this hasn't been an issue in the handful of power outages I've had)
