Maybe they just want to get rid of the internet, that should stop people from pirating music.

People have been asking for MS to open their file formats and api's for years.

I guess I should have been more careful with my wording, I wrote the post in a hurry (was actually just on my way to a meeting). When I said that they always gave users what they wanted, I was refering to average users, which are the majority of computer-users. Most of them don't even know what an API is.

Most ppl know that there is a tradeoff between functionality and security

Again, I should have been more clear in my original post. The tradeoff is, do you create a more secure product, or do you have a more functional product. Buffer overflows (or other "common" exploits) will occur in the beginning for most products, the questions is, how much time do you spend fixing them. Well, if the product functions, and you do not prioritize security, you let the product go knowing it has flaws.

MS's priorities are about marketshare and profit.

The company I work for is not close to as big as MS, but trust me, they (and every other medium to large company) prioritize profits and marketshare above anything else. In the end, I chose to work for this company because I get a part of the profit the company makes and, well, I like getting a decent salary with benefits and stockoptions.

I personally think that IE is crap, and I use MozillaFireBird myself. I use Windows on my desktop, but any server I setup gets to run Linux.
Why do I not use IE on my desktop or Windows on my servers?
Well, it simply doesn't have want I want. However, most people choose to use IE, so it must have what they are looking for in a browser.

Even before I read the comments for this article, I knew I would find lots of comments trashing MS.

MS has always given users what they want, the majority that is (not at the prices they want, but thats a different issue). This is my opinion, and it is based on the number of ppl using MS products.

Now, a few years back, MS was completetly open about the fact that they priorities functionality. Most ppl know that there is a tradeoff between functionality and security, so this simply means they were not prioritising security.

They have just started to focus on securtiy, so it will obviously take them a while to fix it. Just because they have a lot of money doesn't mean it will go quicker. You cant throw 100 developers on one project and expect it to go twice as fast as 50 developers.

I mean, being human I do realize that there are value in history - but am I the only one who thinks that some of this history can be re-created?

Even though it doesn't apply directly to the computers, we sometimes keep historic monuments because we dont want to re-create history. What happened in the 1930's - 1940's is something that should never be re-created. Just forgetting all about it is not the right way to do it. We should remember what happened, keep artifacts in museum and watch Indiana Jones battle the nazi's :)

If we trashed all the old systems, we would forget all the alternative systems that were once designed. If it wasn't for computer and science museums, who would know what an Apple Macintosh looked liked today (man am I gonna be flamed for this). Seriously though, there were a lot of systems designed that never really took off and just kinda died. It is always nice to know how we ended up with the systems we have today.

When reading you're post, an episode of Stargate SG-1 comes to mind. It's the one with the replicating robots. The planet that is being "attacked" by the robots can't get rid of them. In the end, it takes the "primitive" thinking of a human to get rid of them. Point being, more high-tech doesn't always mean better, so don't forget how the basic stuff is done.

  8. Re:$336 with a 120GB disk on Hacking the XBox · · Score: 1

You can also, after using the buffer-overflow exploit upgrade the firmware in the bios by soldering two of the pins (I'm no X-Box hacker, so I'll not try to say which). So, you won't need a modchip.

Sorry dude, but you have to short the two points BEFORE you can flash the original BIOS, even when using the buffer overflow. It is physically impossible to flash the BIOS on the xbox without shorting the two points.

As you have to open the xbox and short the two points anyways, you might as well just try to borrow the matrix modchip. This chip allows you to flash the orginial BIOS, without having to solder one single point (you just have to screw a component onto the motherboard).

Ofcourse, if you ask me, get a modchip instead of flashing the original BIOS.

All we need know is for a bootloader for the xbox. I hate having to swap HD's when I wanna run linux instead of Evo-X.

IANAL, but as I understand it, any act preventing their BIOS from running in exactly the way they intended is a violation. It doesn't matter what you do afterwards. (Unless that's further criminal activity)

Not really true. You can disable the original BIOS without breaking the DMCA (solder a wire from point "d0" to earth will disable the BIOS, and you have not yet broken the DMCA).
If you felt like it, you are free to flash the original BIOS with complete junk (not that the xbox will work afterwards, but you didn't break the DMCA).

The BIOS that people use (excluding the cromwell BIOS used for Linux) is illegal, because it is a reverse-engineer, modified version of the original BIOS.

Maybe yahoo should try to compete with google. Instead, they should focus on what they are good at, being a portal! Yahoo IM is also great, and that is also another component they could try earning money on (create a corporate version of it etc.).

If you can sell rifles or guns knowing this, and if a company can produce them knowing this (not to mention pay a lot of people to influence the government), why do you belive this product should be stopped? Why should we stop the production of this product and not all product that are morally wrong?
