    It may be an improvement if the patent process was corrupt; as the feeding frenzy on the battered carcass of innovation is sickening as well. It isn't just software, a quick perusal of this quackery : Patent Number US 7,485,885 B2; February 3, 2009 : provides at least an instance in a rather imaginative domain. [ symopsis : a sticker that protects you from cell phone radiation; apparently you can apply two so you are doubly protected ].

    In the above example, there were certainly technical people involved, but you don't have to have agreed to any ethics standard to be an inventor; presumably that is part of what lawyers bring to the table in the patent process.

    Somewhat, concisely, "evolution with direction" is little more than creationism in wolfs clothing. It assumes there is a grand goal, to which evolution is the mechanism of achieving.

    I thought this sort of thing was quite difficult, without vapourizing the tissue and dropping it into a mass spectrometer. I know CSI can drop a grain of goop into a breadmaker and have it pinpoint every compound, dna profile and isotope distribution in a few seconds, but I kinda guessed that was a TV-ish thing.

    This is exactly the light that the embarrassed organizations don't want to see cast upon this.

    The shallow set of talking points "Nothing to see here, move on", "What there is to see puts troops/civilians at risk", echoed by a carefully selected group of PR-generals send the opposite message to me.

    To say this puts "civilians at risk" just months after General McChrystal admitted
    "We've shot an amazing number of people and killed a number and, to my knowledge, none has proven to have been a real threat to the force."

    But letting facts get into the way of an argument is very old school.....

    He did add a colourful, if vacuous, terminology to describe the internet. The general expression is now something like:
    (inner|inter|\')(net|tube)s?
    I'm quite fond of innertubes, because it sounds a lot more fun than the stuff on computers.

    Funny, we just started using it for conference calls. With our group distributed, it is really handy to have a private way to communicate during meetings. Has the side effect of keeping all the meeting notes in one spot. I hope it continues to be offered.

    The fashion industry has dealt with counterfeiting for ages; the cheap knock offs actually help them. The real key (to tthem) is about creating something fashionable. The hilarity is that they have to watch what people do with the knock-offs to figure out what fashionable means. Oh-Bla-Di, Oh-Bla-Dah, ....
