  1. Re:I know this won't make me popular on Classroom Bullies On The Internet · · Score: 3, Insightful

This won't make me popular either, but I think there's -some- truth to your statement. No, I wasn't a bully, hell, if I lived in a larger centre I'd probably have been bullied (moreso than the crap the "bullies" in my high school came up with). Super geek? This guy.

However: Sometimes tech people do go a little too far and REALLY need to just stop what they're doing, take a break, and try to interact with the real world. Lord of the Rings was a great movie, Sure, I went opening night and stood in line for an hour. That's great. But if someone accidentally called Gandalf "Gandar", I sure as hell wouldn't say to them "heh, that's Gandalf." and then make a comment involving not being able to tell an ent from an orc. No, I know a lot of geeks (again, mostly software "engineers") who just go way too far with the whole thing to the point where they can barely relate to anything non-geeky, and even with the geeky things they're often either straight up wrong or off on a completely irrelevant tangent.

Yeah, these people bother the piss out of me, and I'm still a geek (albeit I did learn a thing or two since then, like how to get out and do other things). But if it comes down to it, these people usually don't deserve being bullied. Sure they're asking for something; if anything, they either should just be ignored, or get some former geek to take them aside and explain a few things. They don't need to stop being geeks/nerds, they just need to know when to rein it in a bit.

But beating on somebody just because they're annoyinglgy geeky? Well, geeks aren't the only ones who need to chill.

I feel good about not having a real girlfriend all the time. All it takes is one run through the meat-grinder that is a whiny, lying, needy, depressive, self-centered, cheating wench. Now I have more time and money than I've had in a long time and none of the trying to please someone who doesn't deserve it. So I bought a new 19" NEC LCD, named it Nicole, and declared that it can now be my new girlfriend. Strangely enough (to answer ACs right up front), the sex got better.

But I guess if some people haven't had to deal with (in)significant-other hell, then maybe this is just what the doctor ordered. Then they can "dump" their virtual girlfriend and save a fat sack of cash. Might I suggest a nice new monitor and a DSL connection?

Will they switch? Sure they will. People switch because they're lemmings. Look at MSN. I guarantee most of the people I know on MSN only got it because somebody else they knew was on it, who got it because somebody else was on it...

Plus it's Google. I like GMail, think the interface is good for what I do with it, and if they can extend that to messaging then they can start to turn the geek crowd who will then make somebody else do it and the lemming effect kicks in.

Personally, this may be enough for me to install something like it again. Right now I will NOT install MSN and will never install it because of a few personal dislikes. However, Google? That could and may be enough for many to make the move. ... That and I find the text ads interesting and sometimes funny, but not invasive...
