    If more people would use the SWT libraries (part of the Eclipse project) instead of the crappy AWT/Swing libraries

    I looked into this, and (being a mediocre programmer) tried to find "hold my hand" information on how to do it. What I found required too much learning effort on my part. I am looking forward to the Eclipse interface builder plug-in maturing. I'm hopeful that that will make the difference for me.

    Too low. Apple's making a hundred bucks easy on each current iPod. Even at $130 the margin is sliced to bits.

    BUT it will only play AAC not mp3
    No friggin' way in the world it won't play mp3.

    It's the old "give away the handle and sell the razors" model.
    Except that they are making a bundle on the handle and taking a loss on the blades. Why in the world would they invert what they're doing?

    Not exactly. He said they'd "love to," which is not nearly the same thing. I can't see a sub $100 iPod coming out tomorrow. There's just not enough margin in it.

    In the last three years, the number of people who have ranked their concerns regarding spam as "high" or "significant" has actually steadily dropped

    I have to question your figures. The volume and awareness of spam is so much greater than it was three years ago that I find it hard to believe that your users are experiencing significantly less problems with it.

    You imply that the reason they are less concerned is that you have implemented a fee-based filtering system. So you're saying that on one hand it's much less of a concern, but on the other hand your users are willing to pay extra to deal with it? That's a valuable customer base you have there. Perhaps you should look into what other things they don't care about, and figure out a way to charge them for that, too.

    Well, if anything, it's reverse flamebait. Putting a word in double quotes makes me think the author is being sarcastic.

    Well, that's a good point. But it's the audience that determines the "flammability" of the comment. Different comments set off different audiences.

    Just think, if it was about "upgrading" windows boxes to Linux it would not be considered flamebait. It would be applauded by the slashdot sheep.

    So you can't see how saying one thing is flamebait, but saying the opposite is not?
    Example:
    You're a moron.
    You're no moron.
    It also depends on your audience. Saying "Abortion is murder" at a pro-choice meeting might well be flamebait, but saying it at a pro-life meeting certainly is not.

    In a way, you are saying the same thing. With something like the lottery, the variance outweighs the expected return. So if you're going to play, it doesn't really matter if you play it when the jackpot is extra large, or just normal.

    Hmm, must some new law of statistics I'm not familiar with.

    If the jackpot is large enough, each ticket bought that week will have an average return higher than the cost of the ticket. However, that fact alone does not make it a good bet, because the variance overwhelms the positive expectation.

    If SCO go bankrupt before the case gets tested in court it will leave a smear on the good name of linux.

    IF SCO goes belly up the assets don't disappear. Someone will buy them, and then they would have the right to pursue any litigation. More likely, though, is that whoever bought them would try to make peace and announce the claims were unfounded.

    That said, SCO does not ever want to go to court. They are making their money now, and a trial could only hurt them. So if they don't go belly up they will drag things out as long as possible, and the problem will continue.
