The second responds "Well, in Ireland we don't piss on our fingers!" The stupid thing is that people actually think that way. Counter arguments:

    1) Assuming you weren't a total ass and you flushed you need to wash your hands because you touched the urinal/toilet
    2) You should wash your hands more than just in the shower each day for cleanliness reasons (picking your nose is not 'giving your immune system a boost')

how do you make a solid capacitor? Doesn't it work by keeping a charged capacitance between two nearby electrical circuits seperated by a vacuum? You're close, but I recall from my physics classes that capacitors aren't required to have a vacuum between the plates. I just checked the wikipedia entry on capacitors and found the following piece of text:

The capacitance is proportional to the surface area of the conducting plate and inversely proportional to the distance between the plates. It is also proportional to the permittivity of the dielectric (that is, non-conducting) substance that separates the plates.

So, if I understand that text correctly, you can create a smaller capacitor with the same capacity to store charge as a vacuum-gap capacitor by placing an appropriate dielectric material between the plates.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest, and when the scroll wheel stopped working and I was forced to go to the elevator bar to scroll past a story about how software sucks, well...

I've noticed that when my cursor ends up hovering over something that takes mouse input (like a flash object or the floating comment indicator on the left) then the scroll wheel no longer moves the containing page. If I move the mouse over an element of the containing page (like article text) then the mouse wheel starts working again. Sometimes I have to click first. Chances are good that Mozilla isn't ignoring the scroll wheel but it's not actually getting the events.

How about you read the comment in context or think about it a little before you post? The GGP said consumable content (which included TV) and then the GP said "cable/internet" which implies "combined cable TV/Internet" which means the $140 covers both TV and Internet. If you'd had to pay a combined cable internet/TV bill in the last two years that should have been obvious. The comment was probably directed at the fact that $100 of that is more than likely the cable part yet we still have to put up with a 60/40 ratio* of Show/Commercial.

Secondly don't get me started with this crap about paying for access to Internet so therefore everything on it should be free. It's completely illogical. Hell you are on Slashdot which is advertiser supported and without that support this website would not exist.
Personally, I share your view that paying for access != everything should be free. However, I find most advertising to be more annoying than the blink tag. The advertisers apparently want it to be so annoying that if I browse without ad-block I want to gouge my eyes out. The only advertising I do like are little boxes with "ads by Google" or something similar on the border. Every animated graphic advertisement is blocked before it's fetched (slashdot included) because I can't stand the constantly moving annoyances (shove the monkey!) or deceptive boxes (you're broadcasting an IP address!) that pass for advertising.

Instead of getting recommendations that suit us both (which is next to impossible), the recommendations just get very, very confused. If I could just keep my and her recommendations from tangling, we would both have an easier time.

    This problem is already solved.

With Netflix you can have multiple queues (up to one per disc-at-a-time out) and reassign the "number of discs out per queue" from 0-#out as long as the total isn't greater than #out. It also handles reassignment with discs outstanding well.

The result in my family is that we end up with independant queues and independant recommendations. If Blockbuster offers the same feature you could split your queue up and get what you want. On top of that you won't have to keep organizing your queue to get the correct movie next if someone takes time to get around to watching their movie.

There are very few studies available, but those that have been done (here's one link [sciencedaily.com]) seem to show that the paranoia more than offsets the loss of attention and motor coordiantion. The US NHTSA and DOT came to similar conclusions. Of course if it were legal, it would stand to reason that there would be less paranoia of getting pulled over and this effect would reduce. In case you're curious, the DOT figures for drivers in injury accidents testing positive for pot without alchohol was 2%, no control figure was given, but I'd wager the figure for drivers on pot is a little above 2%.

I did say that counting all 17000 being attributed to pot was unreasonable. :-)

I agree that the numbers would adjust if it were legal. They probably also adjust now given the drivers age (perception of invincibility, lack of responsibility). My brother in law was run down (walking home) by an idiot high on pot at a 90 degree turn in the road.

Also, if it were legal the number of users (and hence accidents attributable) would go up but chances are they'd use some other drug to screw themselves up anyway. I expect that the number would go up temporarily then go back down and level off with the alcohol+marijuana numbers being about where they are now.

It only bothers me when people go on about how it's "fucking harmless."

Let me say up front that I'm for legalizing Marijuana as a substance similar to the way Alcohol is legal.

I checked what I believe is the source of your data:
    http://www.drugwarfacts.org/causes.htm

The "zero" number you quote is only for deaths directly related to smoking it. The number for alcohol (85000) includes car related accidents. The number of direct alcohol deaths is more like 68400 - not an insignificant number. The number of car accidents related to "illicit drug use" including Marijuana is included in the 17000 number near the bottom. If we count every incident as a "Marijuana related car accident" (which I know is unreasonable) then we still end up with a number comparable to alcohol. What that says to me is that no matter what substance you have available to let people alter their minds with there is a percentage of the population that will do stupid things like drive and take other people out.

I think it's stupid that smoking it is illegal but perhaps something a little more realistic than "it's harmless" should be the message. If you tell people its harmless and the statistics start to show more indirect deaths due explicitly to Marijuana then you risk backlash.
