Would you rather have all the Netscape engineers try to fix all the problems in 4.x (and we all know there's a ton of em), or try to get Mozilla finished as soon as possible? The last few 4.x versions have just basically been service releases, fixing major stability and security issues. This is how it should be, we're just going to have to put up with the crap for now, knowing that in a few months we'll all be able to delete 4.x and never hear from it again.
Whenever a Mozilla story is on Slashdot, people are always yelling, "why don't they have everyone working on Mozilla?", and now you're asking, "why doesn't 4.72 have big changes?" C'mon people, it's one or the other, make up your mind. Personally I think they're doing it the right way.
You can download Navigator standalone 4.72 for *nix here. I don't think there's a Windows Navigator 4.72 though, that's probably still at 4.08. Oh well.
I know being able to play mp3's from your PDA would be cool, I was once longing for this myself. But after giving it some though....why would you want to? I mean think about it...most times when you're listening to your walkman, you're either jogging or biking or on the bus...in other words, performing some kind of activity. That's why walkmans clip onto your belt.
Now if you were using your PDA, you'd pretty much have to hold it...there goes any possibility of performing any other activity. And while it may seem cool to have everything built into one device, you're just going to end up with something heavy and bulky, that isn't really good at anything. It's probably much easier to buy a good PDA, and a good (separate) mp3 player.
I congratulate the Academy for nominating "Blame Canada," the music in South Park was truly brilliant and I'm glad it's being recognized. (Don't even get me started on Jim Carrey being snubbed AGAIN though...)
But can someone answer me this: Who the bloody hell is Brian Boitano anyway?? I'm assuming he's not just some guy made up for this song, and I have to admit I've never watched the TV show, even though I loved the movie. Is it a character from the show? Some actual real-life guy who I've just never heard of? What? It's driving me nuts...
>When downloading files, 9 times out of 10, I get "File Size: Unknown"
Yep kinda annoys me too, but hey the file will d/l when it d/l's. No amount of knowing details about it's size or other attributes will make it suck down any faster.
I absolutely HATE this about IE, it was one of the reasons I switched back to Netscape at 4.5 after using IE for awhile. (That and the fact that IE kept crashing, not displaying local gifs for some stupid reason, etc.) I know having the info there isn't going to make it go any faster, but I'm a geek goddammmit, I NEED INFO!!!
I have M13 and it doesn't save the scroll position. However there is an open bug, 16806, on this very issue, with a target of Beta 1 or 2 at the latest.
Also, earlier in the article, the author states, "One of the problems, to me, is the lack of a video card which supports 3D instructions (one of the main draw back with most laptops). This has sadly stopped me from playing Quake 3..." So posting a review of this particlular model on Slashdot because you're looking for 3D seems pretty pointless.
Personally I really like the TrackPoint eraser-head device that ThinkPads have, although I know people who hate it and would much rather have a touchpad. I found the solution in the notebooks they had set up at the Slashdot booth at the LinuxWorld Expo last week.
Some HP notebooks, such as the OmniBook 4150 or 900, have dual pointing devices, with both an eraser- head and a touchpad. There's also two sets of mouse keys: one over the touchpad for if you're using the trackpoint, and one below for if you'd rather use the touchpad. This is the ideal solution, IMO, one I'd like to see more of.
Yeah no duh there's gonna be no snow...the conference is in frickin July! We're not living in the tundra up here...it does actually get warm for half the year.
The name "Nelson" just suddenly pops up in the third paragraph, without any prior introduction of who he is, where he works, what his qualifications are, or even what his first/last name is. (I'd assume Nelson is his/her last name, but you can't be sure).
The quality of this article is pathetic. It's not journalism, it's just a FUD-screaming ad for a piece of software...and a poorly one done at that. Unbelievable.
The Xeon is already basically a non-factor. Xeons used to be distinguished by their large amounts of L2 cache, but the latest editions feature the same amount of L2 cache as a normal Pentium III, running at the same speed. Still, Xeons are more expensive than normal Pentium IIIs, for essentially no reason.
In addition, this Register story from a couple weeks ago states that Xeon production is poor, demand is low, and there are no motherboards yet that support the 800. (Xeons use Slot 2, normal PIIIs use Slot 1).
Xeons just basically exist to be a high-margin Intel cash-cow, but are an answer to a question that no one asked.
WordPerfect's Windows market share is around 15% in the US retail channel and has been slowly rising.. I'd hardly call this getting "hammered." Sure, MS has a far dominant share, but Corel is holding its own, and is even making some inroads. Obviously, though, they are never going to break out on Windows to the point that they're beating MS, and that's where Linux comes in.
Take a look at this bug for more info about the scrolling problem with Logitech mice. The reason is the Logitech program em_exec.exe. There's a few workarounds listed on that page, and the bug is still open, so there probably will be a permanent fix.
A very large chunk of IE's market share comes from it being the integrated browser in AOL. I expect that when AOL 6.0 is released, Mozilla will become the underlying browser. When all AOL users start upgrading, Netscape will pick up market share very quickly.
As much as we may hate AOL, you can't underestimate the power of their marketing. I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing free CD's by the thousands with copies of Mozilla on them.
You've also got to place some trust in Joe User who is fully capable of downloading a new browser, he's just using IE because PC Mag said it was better. When NS5 is released and wins those comparos (which I have no doubt it will), that will cause a lot of people to try it. If they try it, I bet they'll stay.
Don't underestimate the power of Linux. As more people start using Linux, Netscape is pretty much their only browser option. Lynx is a non-starter...people want their pictures.
So in conclusion, while it'll be a challenge for Netscape to regain lost market share, it won't be impossible. I don't think we're ever going to see NS share at the level it was in the version 2 and 3 years again, but it'll definitely be higher than it is today.
What's with this obsession with wood retro? Personally I think this "upgrade" takes a PalmPilot, which is a very sleek, cool-looking device, and makes it look like crap.
Don't get me wrong, I admire the construction...I just have no idea why someone would want to do this. It's like those cars in the '50s that were plastered with wood....**shudder**....
I've posted a mirror of the DeCSS code here. The page is hosted on @home in California, but the actual code is on a server in Ottawa, Canada, so it should be OK.

WordPerfect didn't get XML support until version 9. Right now, WordPerfect for Linux is on version 8, so I suspect that when WordPerfect Office 2000 is released in the spring/summer, it will support XML.
Corel is actually pretty heavily into XML and SVG, and WordPerfect was one of the first programs to support SGML. Check out this page for more info on Corel's support of open standards.
...considering Corel is the original developer of GraphOn's "Bridges" program. When Corel was working on it, they called it "jBridge", then they sold it for a 25% stake in GraphOn.
AMD just opened a huge new state-of-the-art fab in Dresden, Germany, so I don't think they're going to be having any supply problems in the near future. In fact the Dresden fab is so big that there was talk a little while ago about Motorola also using it to make G4's. Don't know what came of that though....
The companies making wince products can make all the small form-factor sizes they want, but they will still have the same problem that wince has always had: an interface that is completely out of place on a handheld. A Start Menu on a handheld is a TERRIBLE idea... and reports say that the next version of wince (3.0) still has the damn start menu.
Oh well, m$: take your time figuring out... palm will just continue to clobber you in the meantime

Bad Points:
-Lack of a 3D card

(No, I don't work for Corel)
Matsushita (Panasonic, JVC, Pioneer) once owned Universal, but they sold it to Seagram (an alchoholic beverage company), the current owner.

Or, just click the Help>About Menu in any Explorer window, or right-click My Computer and select Properties. It's not that hard....
What the hell program have you been using? Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Automatically load images check box. Works just fine, thanks.
