I tend to disagree a bit here. A universities reputation is based on the quality of its research and how well it's graduates to in the work force. Research is paid for by outside companies which ARE concerned about their IP. A company will not want to be associated with a "pirate" university.

  2. I hate dealing with Sys Admin on Are Sysadmins Really that Bad? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Its not that there bad people. Most of them are pretty nice if you talk to them over lunch. The problem is they are so constrained by what they can do that they are very frustrating to work with. I must say they also hate working with me for the most part.

The problem is that I'm somewhat tech savy. The sys admin don't like anybody trying new things. Their management likes it even less. Do one little thing or install one little app and if you have problems your on your own. Doesn't matter if your laptop explodes, they'll blame it on VMWARE or whatever you happen to be running.

It wasn't always like this. In days of old the Sys Admin were local and reported into the same groups they supported. As such they knew what we were working on and would help out. Management would support this because it often lead to increased productivity or reliability. But at some point a bean counter decided we needed a corporate IT organization.

Once you decouple the support from the groups they support you end up with apathy and endless rules. Also to get the groups to try anything new you have to weave your way through a bureaucracy. You also end up with smaller and smaller IT groups because their contributions to the end product become harder and harder to trace. If a business unit needs to cut costs the first thing they look at is horizontal organizations outside their own structure. Its a lot easier to cut an outside IT guy than a developer working on a product.

Things look to be taking a turn for the worse. Some of our IT is now going to be out sourced. To me this is equivalent to saying I now fully support myself. I can just imagine trying to convince some contracted person in India that I really do need to have VMPlayer installed on my Windows laptop....

Why can't an MMORPG have an ending? Thats a pretty narrow definition. Most RPG's have endings. How does adding the "Massive Multi-Player Online" to that suddenly change anything? I agree that in some ways it doesn't make the best business sense but I do like the idea of a strong story and a strong story has an ending.

Granted I'm not one who is going to invest years of my life into a game so I don't really care if they try and milk an idea for every last cent.

We have *no idea* what life on other planets might be like. I think that the only thing to look for is patterns which we don't believe could occur in nature, suggesting that the anti-entropy force of life might be present."

With limited budgets it only makes sense to look for life on Earth-like planets. We KNOW life can exist on an Earth-like planet. We don't know that life can exist on other types of worlds (however probable you might think it is). If we can only look at a small subset of known planets it only makes sense to bet on what we already know.

  10. I've been trying to convert on Wal-Mart Is Pushing Compact Fluorescent Bulbs · · Score: 1

I've slowly been converting to CFL over the last couple of months. Besides Walmart our local city government here in Fort Collins, Colorado has been subsidising the cost making them very affordable. There are a few things I don't like, such as the warm-up time, but my biggest issue to date is the size.

Most of the lower priced CFL are not the same size as a standard bulb. Most of my closed in overhead fixtures are too small for the bulbs. I have a few 3-way lamps (the ones with 3 brightness settings) and the 3-way bulbs (50-100-150) are gigantic. The ones I bought actually had little extenders for the top of the lamp. This worked but is a bitof a kludge.

My house uses a lot of the R30 type recessed lighting and the bulbs work great for these. The only place I haven't been able to replace the R30 are in areas, like my HT, where I have a dimmer on the switch. I've read they have dimmable versions of CFL available but they are $$$.

When converting try and think of lights that you leave on the most first. I started by changing my outside lights. This was also nice because they normal bulbs seem to burn out all the time...
