You can get ATSC HDTV PCI card for your PC (MyHD, AccessDTV, etc). These cards reportedly need 10 gig per hour of recording, which is a bit more than a Tivo at Best quality will use (like 2.5 times). IMHO, HDTV would be a better use of that space.
And while there are currently no HDTV Tivo's available, Tivo has shown a prototype one. When will it be available? Probably as soon as it becomes worthwhile ($$$) for Tivo to sell them. Tivo/Replay/etc. are having a hard enough time selling boxes that handle a format that at least 95% of the population of the US can handle!
Step 4: WindowsXP crashes for the 15th time that day right in the middle of Farscape. Step 5: go buy some dedicated hardware to solve this problem.
or maybe this:
Step 4: Run my MSVC compile during Buffy. Step 5: My old Underpowered P3 can't keep up with the MPEG-1 encoding and the compile at the same time. Step 6: Buy faster processor and new motherboard (no longer as cheap...)
It's like adding an extra charge to your cable bill so you can use the Program Guide with your digital cable. In other words, you pay more because their product sucks and to see more ads.
First slashdot post I've read in a while where you can't yell at someone for not reading the article before posting. The summary says just about everything the article says.
RJ-11/RJ-45 modem/network - 8. Very convenient; elegant design. Achilles heel: if you try to pull the cable out of a tangle of wires, you're likely to break the little retaining tab and ruin the cable.
Dude, get yourself to radio shack and buy some replacement RJ-45 and RJ-11 heads and a crimper. Total cost about $25 and your set for life. Also comes in handy when you need that odd sized telephone cable to run to the corner of your living room. Just pool out your spool of telephone wire, cut to length and crimp. Perfect size.
From reading the article, I get the feeling that the real reason for the rewrite is not to get better speed, that would just be a side effect. It sounds like it had to be rewritten because they were running up to limitations in what they could do by just extending their current engine. These things happen from time to time with larger projects.
I think this change would be better implemented on a project by project basis rather than globally for a language. There is nothing I hate more than a language that enforces that enforces coding styles (in either indentation, commenting, or even naming). Coding style should be done on a project by project basis based on what works for that project, not set by fiat by the language police.
Mr. Anthony, can you pinpoint exactly when your excellent work changed from actually being good to utter crap?
I used to read a lot of your works. "The Incarnations of Immortality" was ones of my favorites along with "Bio of a Space Tyrant". Those are the only novels of yours that I have kept. I enjoyed reading the Xanth novels, but after about the 25th or so, I realized that they just keep rehashing themselves over and over again. There is always the same formula, over and over again. When do you expect to do something original with the Xanth series, or have you completly given into just making money and stop writing good stories?
But really, since when did "Ask Slashdot" become "Free Advice for those who don't want to ask their Lawer?". Talk to your lawer and see where you really stand (or at least where your lawer can defend).
Is there a real valid reason for this type of document to be in PDF form?
Have you looked at your HTML translation? The formula's and stuff at the end are unreadable. To really have done it in HTML they probably should have been rendered as GIF's.
The paper was probably prepared in LaTeX to begin with. From there it's easy to put it into PostScript or PDF. Frankly, if you're going to be doing academic work, especially work involving lots of formulas, LaTeX is the way to go. Easy to create, really sharp looking, and readable.
I just did this in april. I had followed the same exact thought process. "Hmmm. Order a dell, and get support/service, but not exactly what I want. Build it myself, get no support but exactly what I want".
So I ordered from a few different places, pretty much depending on price. I got most of the componenets from newegg.com. NECX Direct could (amazingly> beat newegg.com in a couple of places so I got some componenets from there. I got my case and PS from Dump Computers because they had a case that I liked the looks of.
Everything I ordered came in a reasonable amount of time (the stuff from NECX and newegg came incredibly fast). The stuff from dump was a little slower, but then it was also the biggest (being a computer case) and only came UPS ground. All the parts were as advertised and came packaged well and worked! All in all, I'm very happy with my experience.
BTW - I don't work for any of these companies and get nothing in return for this review. I'm just calling it as I saw it.
With the success and popularity of Google, I find myself using URL's for places less and less and just entering names into Google to find places (they are almost always on the first page...) Do you think that you have almost replaced the URL?
Actually, that would be the Macrovision protection that the APEX 600A is stipping off the output signal and allowing you to record it to a VCR. CSS refers to the encryption used on DVD's to control what players can play them.
Most/.readers refer to CSS as a mere annoyance rather than an effective copy protection scheme.
This court decision is not the end of the world, folks.
It may be if you're a DSL customer. They are using the popularity of cable modem service to indicate that there is enough competition in the high speed internet market to indicate that now anti-monopoly restrictions should be placed on DSL service. In the past, you could get DSL from Covad (or somebody else) because the FCC foreced the ILEC's to open up the unused frequencies of the local loop to CLEC use. It sounds like the FCC is going to be forced to change their mind on this matter and will no longer have to allow CLEC's access to the non-voice portion of the local loop.
It sounds like if you want to get DSL service from sombody besides your local RBOC, you'll need to completly change local providers (ie. you new local provider would have full access to the local loop (all frequencies) and they could offer you DSL service). Anybody else have a different interpretation?
FBI: Different rules apply when its a police agency. Since they have the power to arrest and imprison me, they have restrictions placed on how they can search.
Garbage: Why do you think I have a shredder? I have no expectations that my garbage is private.

Lucky you. Who is your cable provider? Comcast here has lots of ads in the program guide. And I'm sure they aren't alone
Do you work for the cable company?

Gosh, I love advertising tactics...
Not bring down the price of the games.
