"But it's not how the Internet, or telecommunication for that matter, has ever worked,'
Hasn't that how the internet has been?
If someone calls me to play a song they wrote over the phone should they pay a fee to provide me that entertainment over the phone?
So how often will it happen that higher profile arrests of public figures has the tape released to the media or in the right circumstance (or cost) for the right person (government official) the video isn't available?
Just because Libertarians are full of silly ideas doesn't mean they all like Bitcoin.
Yes I'm a libertarian,..with the mind of a teenager and I don't own bitcoins.
Exactly.
Those arguing above about GIMP vs Krita are arguing Illustrator vs Photoshop. Just as Adobe releases a full sweet of products with a lot of overlap there is going to be overlap between Krita and GIMP. They are still each useful in their own ways. A digital artist often uses multiple programs to handle different tasks.
Can someone please explain to me why a ban is the first option for some lawmakers who don't understand a certain advancement, technology or social issue. State governments seem to use the "ban it first, ask questions later" philosophy on anything they don't fully comprehend. If this keeps up we will soon start banning theoretical physics.
One could say that Linux has gained popularity but many of the distros do not follow your idea of free software. Since 1984 when you began, do you feel the free software movement has gained or losing fans and supporters?
I think the people commenting that this will not replace iOS or Android are missing the point. Phone users care less about OS choice then desktop users. They see a phone as one unit. A iPhone is not a phone running iOS and a Android phone is not a phone running Android OS. Just talk to many consumers about who own a Samsung or Motorola phone and they often times have no idea what Android even means.
Installing Linux on a desktop is difficult enough. No standard consumer is going to install it on a phone. I believe the point of creating this is to offer a choice to those who want it. At least I hope the developers aren't hoping to one day take down iOS!.
Consumers buy a phone and use it because of the features the OS has, They don't separate the software from the hardware when they think about it.A choice for those who want it though is never a bad thing.
The only reason I can think that they would value it that high would be the value + eliminating competition. Could it be that Facebook is just hoping that it gains something along with losing a competitor and in theory increasing its own revenue? I can't believe that is a solid business plan.
A google search brought this up for a definition of alpha - "a trial of machinery, software, or other products carried out by a developer before a product is made available for beta testing."
So a pre-alpha is a pre-pre-beta.
While I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu I do have to give them credit for doing exactly that. They are creating a truly unique distro. With so many distros out there that are just slightly edited versions of some other distro it is nice to see a distro trying to create a unique release.
Did I miss something, since when does the FAA control the rights to the moon? I think that the other countries on this planet would be a little upset if the US decided the moon was ours and we would decide who could do what with it.
War is already expensive. Arming, protecting and providing the resources to human soldiers is a great expense. I don't believe the bill will be the issue. If cost were the determining factor in war many wars wouldn't have been fought.
I think many companies miss the point of good managers. I've had the positive experience of managing a small group of developers and they relied heavily on me to talk with other managers and upper management when it came to projects. I myself understand programming but am not a programmer myself, my background is based in networking and databases admin. I understood that developers needed time and resources to resolve issues or develop new products. It was my job to make sure the programmers had the resources they needed and also to make sure that upper management had a clear understanding of the time table and end result. This made the developers more comfortable and gave management the go between they needed to fully understand project needs. Everyone can not be great at everything, and if a developer is great at coding, but not so good at dealing with management why not have someone who understands be the communicator.
Middle management often gets a horrible reputation for being a roadblock, but in some cases it can be exactly what is needed.
I think the public figures "if I'm not doing anything wrong, why should I care about spying". The idea that they are only targeting terrorists and criminals gives people the illusion that our privacy is not truly at risk. It's when they misinterpret information and target the innocent people is when they get upset. It's a false sense of security not fully understanding the larger scope of spying and archiving information.
110 million might never be paid out, but I'm sure the MPAA will use it as a PR move. They will spin it as "If you run a site, you will owe 100's of millions".
I'm not sure I support either side in this. As cliche as it sounds two wrongs don't make a right. We have copyright laws and whether they are ridiculous or not if you break them there's a chance you will have to pay. I'd much rather see true discussion and debate on the topic than the constant one side or the other won the battle argument. If this continues this way it will be like the war on drugs. Each side wins battles and neither wins the war.
Samsung might be smart doing things like this. Rather than try to take over the masses to gain market share, take over all the niche markets. Apple makes one phone for all. Samsung makes a bunch of phones for individuals. Not sure if it's a good business model, but marketing wise it should work.
It's just like the "We can't explain this, so it must have been aliens" philosophy.
If someone tried to create a backdoor, it must be the NSA. Not some bored hacker or some other explanation.
Russian officials switch from Coke to Pepsi because it's healthier.

Choose Cheap, Quick and Correct, but you can only choose two.
I wonder how many of those using this as a chance for more MS bashing are posting from their Windows machines?
Exactly. Those arguing above about GIMP vs Krita are arguing Illustrator vs Photoshop. Since it was a rock that must have been thrown in front of the camera it has to be alien bigfoot. Bigfoot is known for throwing rocks.
Just another OS for someone to release a root kit for.

There's a (small) growing number of adult websites taking bitcoin now. We might possibly be witnessing the power of porn again.
